I really enjoyed ice skating when I lived in Minnesota. We made a rink in the courtyard of our housing complex so the ice was literally just outside our front door. We skated and played hockey on an almost daily basis. I haven't skated in over 40 years now.

A year already - wow! I love how they're holding a picture of themselves as newborns!

I put flowers out overnight to get some snow on them, and moved them onto the porch around 2 am so the rain wouldn't wash the snow away. But it warmed up enough overnight that most of the snow melted anyway. But I still got a couple of interesting shots this morning.

for christmas, santa got me a cool macro lens adapter thingy. problem was, the elves made it for a 58mm lens, and mine are all 52mm. so i finally got around to ordering up the little $7 52-58mm ring adapter. it just so happens that at the same time, my cherry tree blossomed. and boy am i having fun with it!

this is what i get when i use it on my 18-55mm lens, at 55mm

and this fun stuff is what happens when i pull back to 18mm

and slapping it onto my 55-200mm lens just about turns it into a low-power microscope. i'll have to find a good, well-lit subject for that exercise...

And so it begins... then you'll want better lenses, and improved software, which leads to a faster computer, and then you'll need more storage space, and you'll want to back up everything to a NAS...

All kidding aside, ff you have any questions, hit me up.

Well, It's not like I'm just starting to take pictures. I know I need something standard (is 50mm standard?) for the average 'hey I'm at a wedding/party' shot. I like macro stuff, so that'll be on the list, and something for 'fast moving child', and then probably something zoomie for baseball. so uh, 4?

themetfairy
Oct 26 2015 09:14 AM
Re: Cheese 2015

One thing to consider is a jack of all trades zoom lens - 18-200 or 18-300. It's not great for macro and there's a tradeoff in artistic quality. However, when you have one of these lenses you can go straight from shooting the child on the Little League field to a shot if an adorable younger sibling who is right next to you without the time or fumbling involved with swapping out lenses (and without getting dust in your gear).

For your speedy child you'll get used to shooting in shutter speed priority so she doesn't look like a blur as she zooms by

Here's my advice. Don't. Those jack of all trades lenses do not deliver the quality. If you want to replace your 55-200, ask for this:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?N=10449088

It costs about half the price of the 18-300 all in one, and delivers better quality at the long end.

It depends on what your goals are. If you find yourself going back and forth a lot between close and far subjects, the jack of all trades covers a lot of ground and is extremely convenient. Whatever you lose in quality you make up for in the shots you get to take because you're not wasting time swapping out lenses. Your shots won't be as artistic, but you won't have the frustration of not having the right lens on your camera when you have a limited amount of time to get your shot.

When you shop, check out B&H on 9th Avenue between 33rd and 34th. Check out the different cameras and lenses. Hold them in your hands and see how they feel. Ask questions - the guys there don't work on commission, and they're incredibly knowledgeable.

When you're actually ready to make your purchase, you might want to consider ordering by telephone or online, because you won't pay sales tax when they ship out of state (just make sure someone will be around to sign for the UPS delivery). They are lightning fast - if I order before 11 am I generally get my items the next day.

The other nice thing about B&H is that if you order something and don't like it, you can return it within 30 days for a complete refund (save the original packaging during this period). My quintessential story about this is that my daughter bought a laptop from them several years ago and it didn't have a feature that we thought it would - totally our mistake. She brought it back to B&H and exchanged it for the model that had the feature she wanted, and they only charged her the difference in price between the two models. I don't return a lot of merchandise to them, but the few experiences that I have had with them have been amazingly positive. It's nice when you are making a major purchase and you know that they seller is committed to customer satisfaction.

hmm... i think i might rather have the 70-300, especially as minimm gets into more and more sporting things, and the µmm's start joining him. the convenience of one lens is certainly appealing, but i might rather have the added quality and (relative) cheapness. i'm already used to, and generally unfazed by, switching lenses on the fly.

This is my second oldest lens, and one I use when I don't feel like carrying around my 70-200 (which is my workhorse, but it's a tank)

heard of B&H (commercials commercials..), though the hours aren't particularly convenient. Might have to stop at Bergen Camera or one of these big places in Bergen County somewhere.

There are just so many variables in cameras for an amateur that isn't super versed in things.

I have bought from B&H for far too many years to admit (30), and have never had a problem.

It sounds like you are looking at Canon, I am admittedly biased towards Nikon, but I will give you this piece of advice: Go to a store that has both the Nikon/Canon camera you are interested in, and its Canon/Nikon counterpart. Play with both of them in the store - see how they feel in your hand (they both have a distinctively different feel), and choose the one that feels best in your hands.

I'm not particularly set on my brand, I have no particular loyalty. (I think my wife mentioned Canon though) My current point and shoot camera is a Canon. I've generally been happy with it. Though I did find it fairly interesting/annoying that it's a "right-handed" camera.

I picked up on Canon, because they refer to their crop-sensor cameras as APS-C, (as do Sony) where Nikon refers to theirs as DX.

(They're all "right-handed" - another reason why us lefties are closer to being ambidextrous than our right-handed counterparts.)

ahh, I just picked up the APS-C as something when I was googling and reading, didn't realize there were different terms. Not to be confusing or anything.

Yeah, I figured on that. Although I'm very lefty-heavy on my phone, so this has always make it much easier to double fist cameras.

As for DX cameras, The Nikon D5300 comes with Wifi Included:

If you get a Nikon without wifi, you can buy a wifi adaptor for about $40...

Seems a decent place to start. (same price on Amazon) Any obvious red flags about something like this? seems to have two lens covering much of what I'd want, decent enough video in a pinch. Good reviews, simple looking controls. I know ultimately I can buy new lens but not a larger image sensor. Looks like Full Frame is out of my budget though.

Looks like there are a lot of 'discounts' on a lot of these listings. Would i make out better by waiting for Black Friday season or is there enough competitiveness in cameras that it doesn't really matter?

I don't see any red flags. Between the Instant Savings, free shipping and 2% discount it looks like a solid deal, and it's a sweet camera. Just make sure that you purchase an SD card to go with it and I think you'll be set.

I'm sure that there will be Black Friday deals, etc., but I would be surprised if they were substantially better than this one (if at all).

As dgw and I both advised earlier, however, I'd suggest that you pop out to a local store and just see how it feels in your hands before pulling the trigger.

One further FYI - Canon and Nikon both make great cameras. Whichever you choose, though, keep in mind that their lenses aren't interchangeable. So if you buy a Nikon, you're committing to using Nikon lenses in the future (it's a good thing in my opinion, but just be aware that if you bought a Nikon and suddenly decided that you wanted a Canon, you'd have to start from scratch vis-a-vis the lenses. And vice versa).

Good luck!

Thanks, and oh, definitely. My boss just frowns on me popping out on Monday afternoons. ;-)

yeah, definitely SD card, something I'm at least well-researched in. I've got a 32g in my camera now, which should do if i buy a camera soon, and there will definitely be black friday/seasonal sales on a 64 or even a 128. (As well as a external HD to dump the 400 pictures of my lunch I take)

Bosses - don't they have any sense of priorities! ;)

I just edited my above post to throw in how when you choose Nikon or Canon you're making a decision that you're going to live with for a while because their lenses aren't interchangeable. Just be aware of that.

Re: Cheese 2015

I had an old Nikon FG (film camera) that my wife bought me as a graduation present in 1985. It was an awesome camera and I took thousands of pictures with it until finally internal workings seized up on it 6-7 year ago. Now I have a Nikon D5100 with a pair of zoom lenses (18-55 and 55-200). I would like to have a little more powerful telephoto for greater magnification for some nature and sporting events. Unfortunately, the high powered zoom lenses (or dedicated 300 or 400 mm lenses) cost far more than I wish to invest. I am considering possibly picking up a 1.7x teleconverter. I know I will lose roughly 1.5 f-stops, but it would give me the magnification I am looking for at a semi-reasonable price. I read and hear mixed reviews regarding teleconverters and was wondering if anyone uses one and what their experience has been with them.*

*Upon edit: Since initially posting this, I have learned that my Nikon AF-S 55-200 f/4-5.6 G ED telephoto lens is not compatible with the Nikon teleconverters, so I gues that option is out. I would still like to hear any suggestions anyone might have regarding my desire for greater telephoto (zoom) power.

Here is a chart that lists the lenses that have at least some compatibility with the different Nikon Teleconverters.

http://www.nikonusa.com/en_INC/IMG/Asse ... chart.html

I use the 1.4x Nikkor TC-14E II with my AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II, and the quality is very good with that combination. I wouldn't recommend getting a TC that is any stronger than that, because picture quality does suffer as you increase TC strength.

If you're looking for more zoom power, the 70-300 Vr is an excellent value (and the price just dropped on it):

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/4 ... ikkor.html

If you are looking at something longer, and have more money in your budget, this is a new lens that has gotten rave reviews:

Thanks for the input. I am probably looking at purchasing the AF-S NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED VR II zoom lens.

The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Lens would be an awesome addition for me, but I'm not sure Mrs. Claus will think I've been that good this year.

Re: Cheese 2015

Did actually go about and do this. Got the Nikon D3300 that came with the 15-55 and the 55-200 (would've liked the 70-300 but it was more and not immediately available at the localish camera shop)

Having fun playing around, though haven't done anything super fancy yet. Mostly playing in Aperture Priority or Shutter Priority mode.

Realized my version of photoshop doesn't process RAW files, which is a pain. Wanted to try to brighten up some of the photos I accidentally took with a tiny aperture before looking at the display warning me it was too dark.

Do you have Adobe Bridge installed with your copy of photoshop? If so, convert the file to jpg in your Nikon software, open up Adobe Bridge, right click on the file, and select, open in camera raw.

This will give you some type of Raw processing before you move it to photoshop.

Don't think I do. (I could get it)

Isn't converting it bad though? You don't get the same processing abilities once they're JPGs. The camera is saving NEF and JPG right now.

You do get some compression with JPG, but processing it this way does give you the majority of the capabilities of shooting with RAW. Admittedly, it isn't perfect, but it does give you some options until you can process your raw files directly.

So the other day I took my phone to roughly the same spot, actually just a bit up the street, for a "what does that strip look now" shot as the theater was demolished some 13 years ago:

The open and gated place is where the theater stood. Now a quad like area for condo units behind the stores.
