I think Uncle Joe has joined his rowdy biker buds and went out cheating on Aunt Sarah with the easy babes of Fire Lake. I think Joe being "afraid to cut the cake" means he never married her; he keeps her around but at the same time can't give up Fire Lake, he's addicted to the thrill just as he is to gambling on cards.
|
Edgy MD Jan 04 2015 01:00 PM Re: Pat St. John Presents the CPF Song of the Day 2015 |
I see something more existential in Seger. It's the birthday cake that Uncle Joe is afraid to cut. Like many a biker, Joe deals with the too-present reality of his mortality by living in denial, refusing to acknowledge the passing of time.

One of the things I dig about "Don't Go Back to Rockville" — besides having a lyric that's 44% more concrete than your standard REM track — is that Stipe sings it on the track but Mills (the composer) would sing it live in later years.

Also cool is that they band was in a good position to go big, and the management flipped out when the band insisted on a using a country song as their lead single off Reckoning.

We're both wrong. "South Central Rain (I'm Sorry)" was indeed the lead single in May 1984. But "Don't Go Back to Rockville" came out in the fall.

Yeah I'm not trying to fire Stipe as lead vocalist, but at times I did find his mumbling style of singing frustrating.

Post-REM breakup, I've wanted to see a Mills solo concert (and a solo album) more than any project from any other member of that band. Still hoping he does it some day.

I enjoy the music threads here. I enjoy learning details and factoids about groups I grew up listening to (and often still listen to now). I have discovered many new artist (at least new to me) over the years. Butch Walker is one of the artists I now listen to after first learning about him in music threads like this one. Looking forward to his upcoming release.

His dad died last year, and this whole record just oozes that. Add in the Ryan Adams influence and this is a VERY laid-back record. There are one or two tunes on there that don't do anything for me yet, but that generally happens with all his records. Butch has the luxury of kinda doing whatever he wants; he makes his money producing and writing for other artists, I'd think, so when the time comes to write his own stuff, he goes with what he's feeling at the time. The Metal Sludge crowd derides that because they just want him to RAWK because he comes from the hair metal era, but he seems pretty content doing what he's doing.

Frayed Knot Feb 16 2015 09:35 PM Re: Pat St. John Presents the CPF Song of the Day 2015 |
Pat St John probably only played Neil Diamond songs very early on in his DJ career before the programming managers decided that he no longer fit their formats. But Pat is released from such commercial constraints here and so he decided to play this 1966 song if for no other reason other than folks need to be reminded that Neil did something other than 'Sweet Caroline'.

|
Frayed Knot Feb 17 2015 07:43 AM Re: Pat St. John Presents the CPF Song of the Day 2015 |
Yeah Isaak covered it, as did Johnny Cash on one of his late-in-life, stripped-down, Rick Rubin produced albums (Americans Recordings 3) which is all kinds of good. Tom Petty on backing vocals.

Pat St. John went out in a blaze of glory, playing the full half-hour Big Montage he created at 'PLJ -- which incorporated the call letters of his long-ago employer -- on 'CBS. He then was given the first 15 minutes of the next show to keep going and play several songs that I am certain have never been heard on 101.1 FM in New York. Dude got emotional at the end though he did remember to put in a plug for his SiriusXM show.

I was always strangely fascinated by this song.

The cameraman is inexplicably fascinated by the drummer, but then, around 2:15, an alien invades Terry Kath's body and delivers the music of the spheres.

Pat St. John can't resist getting pumped-up by this tattooed cheerleader's new tune. How about you?

Pretty close to a home run there, Frank.

I agree, and this new rekkid looks like an improvement on his last but still not the radical reinvention I have in mind for FT.

Josh Ritter. For a long time I couldn't tell him apart from Josh Rouse, who like that other Josh, is a kind of modern day Paul Simonesque folk-rocker. I kind of latched onto his last record, then went back and found his older stuff, now listening to first tracks of his forthcoming record, I'm declaring him King Of All Joshes. Seriously, great toe-tapper here!

I was at a beach bar a couple of weeks ago and this song came on. I consider it the greatest omen ever. I went nuts.

Those dancers look hotter than the ones on Sabado Gigante. (Shame that show is no longer on the air) Later

For the first time in my life, i got up on a table. Lets put that in the mid-life crisis category and move along.

A throwback track that popped into my head this afternoon.

Played during every between-innings break and I never got sick of it. I've come to really dislike latter-day Petty, but that album, despite being almost 100% a solo album (Petty plays almost every instrument on every track), is a real oasis in the desert.

Yah, mon. Funny, sounds much older than "Brimful of Asha" but not.

I thought it was older until I heard the references to laptops and data sticks.
