Pat St. John Presents the CPF Song of the Day 2015

Hi, I'm New York radio legend Pat St. John. I used to rock and roll all day on WPLJ, and party every morning on WNEW, and now I fill in on weekends at CBS 101. But my biggest gig is only now starting: hosting the "CPF Song of the Day" thread here on the Crane Pool Forum. Tune in every day to hear what crap your CPF peers come up with. Discuss, react! Smoke pot!

Let's start it off with a klassik from Tim Rowan of the New York Times! Oh I mean fellow Detroiter Bob Seger:

Re: Pat St. John Presents the CPF Song of the Day 2015

Fire Lake is:
(a) an idyllic biker encampment
(b) a biker encampment, but mostly for old, burned-out bikers
(c) a dead-end biker encampment, where losers go to be free, but end up getting taken
(d) the hereafter.

I think it's a little of each, isn't it?

Never realized that song had two lead vocalists.

Is Fire Lake located within the Twilight Zone?

Re: Pat St. John Presents the CPF Song of the Day 2015

I think Uncle Joe has joined his rowdy biker buds and went out cheating on Aunt Sarah with the easy babes of Fire Lake. I think Joe being "afraid to cut the cake" means he never married her; he keeps her around but at the same time can't give up Fire Lake, he's addicted to the thrill just as he is to gambling on cards.

Re: Pat St. John Presents the CPF Song of the Day 2015

I see something more existential in Seger. It's the birthday cake that Uncle Joe is afraid to cut. Like many a biker, Joe deals with the too-present reality of his mortality by living in denial, refusing to acknowledge the passing of time.

Fire Lake has been a sanctuary for bikers since well before Joe first discovered it as a teenager. Sometimes he goes out for a weekend. Sometimes for two months. But lately the reality is clear --- that the bronze beauties are out-numbered by the bikers, and his likelihood of catching one for himself gets less likely as the time passes and the younger men get first pickings.

But nonetheless, he still feels called to go back. And it kills Aunt Sally. Because she knows one of these days he ain't coming back. Either because he's gonna run off with one of those girls who flirts so well and looks like Sally never will again, or because he's going to lose it all --- including his bike --- on eights and aces. Or maybe because he's gonna make that "first mistake," failing for the first and last time to negotiate the curve on the pass between Tannersville and Moultrie.

* * *

Henley and Frey and Timothy B. Schmitt sing on this (the three Eagles that you want singing on your record). I tend to think it's their payback for Seger giving them "Heartache Tonight," which turned out to be their last number one.

One of the things I dig about "Don't Go Back to Rockville" — besides having a lyric that's 44% more concrete than your standard REM track — is that Stipe sings it on the track but Mills (the composer) would sing it live in later years.

Rockville used to be one of our drinking songs only we
changed some of the words around and inserted Peekskill
in for Rockville. Good thing there was no Youtube back then.

And what did I do four years ago but move back to Peekskill.

His dad died last year, and this whole record just oozes that. Add in the Ryan Adams influence and this is a VERY laid-back record. There are one or two tunes on there that don't do anything for me yet, but that generally happens with all his records. Butch has the luxury of kinda doing whatever he wants; he makes his money producing and writing for other artists, I'd think, so when the time comes to write his own stuff, he goes with what he's feeling at the time. The Metal Sludge crowd derides that because they just want him to RAWK because he comes from the hair metal era, but he seems pretty content doing what he's doing.

Pat St John probably only played Neil Diamond songs very early on in his DJ career before the programming managers decided that he no longer fit their formats. But Pat is released from such commercial constraints here and so he decided to play this 1966 song if for no other reason other than folks need to be reminded that Neil did something other than 'Sweet Caroline'.
This was actually ND's first hit (for himself anyway as his songwriting had previously spawned hits for several others).

I was running some errands and listening to radio in my car yesterday when "Come Dancing" came on. My college age daughter started singing along (she knew every word). She asked who the band was and I told her the Kinks. She thought for a second and said, "Aren't they the ones that did Lola?" I told her, "Yes".

For some reason, the conversation made me think of "Gallon of Gas". So I proceeded to tell her about the supposed oil shortage of the late-70's and the resulting gas rationing which inspired the song "Gallon of Gas". When we got home I played the song for her, she said she liked it and thought it was "kind of funny when you know the story behind it".

His tenure as the bandleader backing casino soul sweethearts Kreme 'n' Koffee was the best bit. You got the idea that if one day had turned out differently, he'd have spent his career doing that.

Pat St. John went out in a blaze of glory, playing the full half-hour Big Montage he created at 'PLJ -- which incorporated the call letters of his long-ago employer -- on 'CBS. He then was given the first 15 minutes of the next show to keep going and play several songs that I am certain have never been heard on 101.1 FM in New York. Dude got emotional at the end though he did remember to put in a plug for his SiriusXM show.

Class act in these voice-tracked, phone-tested times.

Funny that he used to get pissed when audiences would request Bryan Adams stuff.

"Run to You" is a much better song than "69." I always hated the latter, barely stands ahead of other crappy I-wanna-be-a-rock-star songs like "Shooting Star" and "Juke-Box Hero"

We were just talking about "RtY" this morning.

"OHHH! but her love is cold
It wouldn't hurt her if she didn't know, 'cause..."

Well, she'll sure find out if you're screaming about it on the radio. He also commits the BoDeans sin of using "You and I" in the object of the sentence in order to get a cheap rhyme.

I don't like either. I think "So69" is limp and weak but "RtY" is hatefully annoying. My Bryan Adams jam is "Cuts Like a Knife."

(Has this very important question been polled?)
