We happened to be up at Wave Hill this morning for a crafting hour/some winter-hiking, and the snow dusting came just as we started walking... a little like walking through a moving postcard.

Wintry mix here now. Not quite so picturesque.

Re: Should we talk about the weather? 2015

I believe I've mentioned before here that since NBC is now under the same corporate umbrella as the 'Weather Channel' their national nightly news manages to get a weather story in at least three days a week. The other day I believe it was in their second story where they went with the stunning news that parts of the country either were, or were about to be, very cold, even as much as 15-20 degrees below seasonal averages in some places.
Can you imagine that - weather in January that was both cold AND a variation from the norm?!? I'm almost surprised that they didn't break into regular programming.

It was nasty to drive through last night, and I just spent almost one hour shoveling heavy wet slush off my driveway.

it's not supposed to get that cold really I don't think, what I've seen suggests the problem will be more of the flooding variety especially with frozen streams and creeks not accepting rainwater.

It's already bad up here again, everything is layered in ice. And
since the it's still raining, the water has no where to go because
the ground is so frozen. Thankfully, tomorrow is a holiday for
most... I think we'll be waking up to real mess.

Re: Should we talk about the weather? 2015

After the last big snow/ extended power outage of a few years ago, one of our daughters bought us a storage battery/ AC converter to use for small appliances and charging our cell phones. Naturally, it hasn't been needed until this storm. When we opened it up to charge it up there were no instructions. We went online and saw that the model was recalled - it overheats and starts to smoke.
My daughter doesn't have the receipt any more, but she'll contact the place she bought it and the manyfacturer to see if she can get a refund or credit.
Glad we haven't had to use it.

Hopefully you can get some sort of replacement from the

Re: Should we talk about the weather? 2015

The thing about "bomb" storms (i.e., disturbances that go from nothing to massive in a day or two) is that they are very hard to predict. With this storm, it wasn't the severity but the trajectory that threw the forecasts for a loop; the storm went 50 miles further east than predicted. This did not help Eastern Long Island (we're at a foot and a half in Ronkonkoma, and the forks got two feet at least) or New England, but the City residents (and I'm guessing New Jersey residents even more so) are wondering what the big deal was.

Because the internet sucks I have to work today, but I'm doing so from home which I think is okay but I don't really know because people suck at communication.

my wife has to work, because your company got burned last week and now is being stubborn. delayed opening, she just left as it started hailing. I went out and shoveled a little to make sure she had traction and could clear the pile of snow the plow left in front of the driveway.

Re: Should we talk about the weather? 2015

Had big snowbanks last week, so I carried my trapped little dog over one of them. Didn't see the black ice on the other side and went ass over teakettle, dropping the poor wee thing on the icy pavement in the bargain.

She couldn't get up, I didn't know if it was because she couldn't right herself on the ice or she was stunned, or she had a break, but she landed pretty hard. I rushed into the house, confessed my guilt to a (very cross) wife, and we rushed her in to the vet. After losing our other guy the previous week, I felt sick.

They assured us (yay) no x-ray was needed, and she was just bruised up, prescribed a few days of painkillers, and she turned out fine, though she seems to trust me far more warily, always giving me the stink eye from the corner of the room. A cute stink eye, but a stink eye nonetheless.

My wife told me to take her out tonight. I stepped out into Iceworld and didn't make it past the top step. But (I guess) I learned my lesson. Rather than trying to right myself and doing an involuntary flip, I let the lower half of my body collapse, going down hard but keeping my bearings, and more importantly, keeping the dog tucked under the right arm while the left arm protected my head from conking. Down one, two, three, four, five, six steps. Ankle, hip, ankle, hip, ankle, hip! Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow!

But I held the dog safe and fast. And I felt like a semi-redeemed champ as I (literally) crawled back in the house looking for ibuprofen.

She beat me back up the stairs. Turns out she didn't need to pee after all.

This current winter storm is apparently named* 'Thor'
Met fans will of course see this as a positive omen for Noah Syndergaard's upcoming season.

* Names for winter storms aren't really official and the National Weather Service openly disassociates themselves from the practice. Unlike the summer storms that the NWS does name, these winter situations often aren't stand-alone storms; they combine, they break up, they do all kinds of things to the point where the storm that hits one part of the country may only partially be the same one when it hits days later in another part.
This naming thing is entirely a marketing-like campaign from 'The Weather Channel'

We were both not home Tuesday night and yesterday when we got 1 1/2' of ice.*

Since we hadn't shoveled our driveway in about a month, and it was kinda warm yesterday, our driveway is now a sheet of ice. And the top of the snow is too crusty to do the "walk along the side of the pavement" trick. Putting out the garbage this morning was a riot. I noticed the neighbor kid averted his eyes, lol....

We didn't get any snow last night or today (missed us by THAT much) but tonight is supposed to go below zero. My poor car has been sitting here getting slowly stuck in the now frozen slush from yesterday so tonight our first priority was to see if we could move it and then get over the snowplow mess.

It moved! :)

When you have a corner house, with storm drains on either side of the corner, all the detritus of the entire block ends up on your curbside during the melt-off.

I think I guilted my neighbor into doing stuff. Was trying out my new backpack blower to clean up all the leaves I didn't in fall (well, some of them, as the little bit of gas I had didn't last me very long) and shortly after he came out and was doing yard work as well.

My deal with summer weather is that I care a lot more about the nighttime temperature than about the daytime highs.
IOW, if offered the choice of an entire summer of days where it never went above 80 but also never dropped below 70, vs one where it hit 90 every day but then dropped down to 60 each night, I'd opt for the 90/60 option every time. It can get as hot as it wants during the day, I just want to crack a window at night rather than need to blast the AC just to get to sleep.

Pennsylvania, just a short drive north of the Hershey Park attractions. Maybe it is a sister track to Hollywood Park racetrack in Florida.
Bigger than I thought it would be. I had heard there were only slots there, but there were plenty of table games, too. The only thing that disappointed us was there aren't too many places to eat, and the buffet is closed Monday and Tuesday.
And, for the improvers of the breed, it abuts the racetrack. You can view the races from a grandstand that looks like its part of the second deck of the casino. There was supposed to be a big race there yesterday, but we were already on our way home.

I always suspect there's a house on most blocks that has no trees but a billion leaves because they're at the center of a wind tunnel or something.

I've learned just to blow the leaves in the street as I go and don't worry about neat piles, the cars up and down the block smooth it all out.

We have bagged-leaf pickup and vacuuming service but the schedule is
not very accommodating. My street gets leaves vacuumed on 12/9 this
year and it's illegal to put leaves on the street until like 72 hours or some-
thing before your day. Of course, driving around over the weekend there
are leaves on the residential streets all over and of course there was an
obligatory car fire because some knucklehead parked in a big pile of
leaves. Wonder if the homeowner then gets a summons and sued.

This year I'm just bringing my half-dozen bags to the dump on Saturday.

I think I'm not supposed to put the leaves out until the week of (12/10 is next) but I've got a toddler and thanksgiving is coming. I'll put out the leaves when I have time to put out the leaves.

Town seems pretty lax with enforcing these things. I've never had them ignore my recycling or not taking my barely tied up twigs in the spring or anything.

Now just to figure out how to get the leaves out of my damn gutters/roof.

I was on the fence about running local 5K races last weekend and this coming weekend, but with these kinds of temperatures I signed up for both.

How do you not? How often can you run in December without having to totally layer up?

I was never a runner, but as someone who frequently played football and basketball (provided no snow on the ground) outdoors in the winter months through college i dont quite understand the "layer up" thing?
aren't you stripping down to shorts (or breakaway pants/sweats) and a t-shirt within about ten minutes of physical activity? heck, even shoveling snow i cant keep my coat/sweatshirt on very long no matter how cold it is. is that just me?

I think that's just you.

I may or may not run in shorts on Saturday; most likely I'll wear longer pants. Depending on the temperature I may start out in a long sleeved T over a singlet and when I warm up a bit I'll take it off and wear it around my waist. But a year ago, when it was freezing, I'd have an Under Armour layer under my running pants and I'd probably wear a sweatshirt layer over a long-sleeved T. I tend to get away without gloves except during the coldest weather because I'm short and can just pull my shirt sleeves over my hands, and I may or may not wear a hat depending on the temperature.

I have never seen breakaway pants in races; I don't think they're a thing in running.

Re: Should we talk about the weather? 2015

I tend to overdress when running outside in the winter. I'd rather start at a comfortable level and move up to roasting/sweating as opposed to starting cold and having to go 15-20 minutes to "warm up." But that's just me.

Re: Should we talk about the weather? 2015

Once it's in the 40's I'm cold and like to dress in layers while hiking
(dog walking) or doing whatever outside. The cold never used to bother
me until I started taking blood pressure prescriptions. I guess not having
my heart explode is better than always being cold.

Blood pressure meds? Maybe that's the reason I'm always cold. I already know that my normal body temperature is 97. something (not 98.6) and I thought that was the reason. But I'm taking blood pressure medication, too.
Thanks, Kase, I'll have to ask my doctor about that.

If I hit 98.6, I'm getting sick lol

We got a little less than an inch of snow/sleet overnight. The city plow
went up the street around 4:30 which seems to me a little unnecessary
overtime but they gotta spend that 5% city tax increase somewhere.

I had to shovel about an inch of ice/ slush off my driveway on Wednesday morning, and still have some leftover slush on my lawn.
