#Mets expect trade SP, likely Gee, next 7-10 days But might need Shields signed 1st. #sfgiants like Gee, but have to know if getting Shields

Re: Gee, it's been great but you have 7-10 days to pack

Not quite certain I understand.

1. Am I to understand the Mets are trading Gee to free up room and salary to add James Shields?
2. Or is it that the Giants don't want to trade for Gee until they know Shields is no longer an option for them?
3. Or perhaps, the Mets and Giants are close, but both sides are niggling on the deal, and hoping the ultimate signing of Shields will clarify for both just what a Gee is worth.

WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN, SHERMAN?!

My guess is that it's this: "2. Or is it that the Giants don't want to trade for Gee until they know Shields is no longer an option for them?"

Some mumblings about how the Mets should sign Shields. Hell, if it bumps up the value for Gee it's even better.

I don't imagine that they're going to do that, but if they do, then they'll also probably want to trade Niese or Colon in addition to Gee.

Yeah, 2. I think Sherm says the Giants like Gee but might not get him if Shields comes to them at the right price. If Shields goes and signs with some other club, Giants get hotter for G.

I don;t think the Mets want or need Shields.

It's just one of the creative solutions people are so drawn to. The idea being if you can't upgrade SS/offense, upgrade run prevention (which also makes bad defense up the middle less damaging?) . And also hoard even more arms in a supply and demand sense. Now you're dealing from an even bigger position of strength when demanding a SS.

It's not a horrible one, does seem unlikely though.

The only problem with that idea is that you are probably degrading the trade value of any non-prospect age pitcher who you yank from the rotation because clubs dont get recent tape of him pitching every 5th day and coming out of the pen isnt the same.

I like the Shields/Scherzer idea, frankly. At this point, I'd probably rather slightly overpay in money for one of them than overpay in money/prospects for one of the flawed shortstop options out there.

Waylon Flowers and Kenny think others may be in on the Gee-stakes.

There's a lot of logic here. I worry a lot less about Flores' defense if Scherzer is striking out 12 batters a game.

In all seriousness, there's a LOT of logic to signing Scherzer. Get the best available player (especially in a year when our first round pick has been lost) and worry about having too many starters later.

It pisses me off that they look to be just dumping Gee. He is not an All-Star, but he is a serviceable starter, and not a piece to be discarded.

I hope that they really are getting something back and not just looking to unload salary.

Not necessarily. First of all, baseball's still in that off-season period where teams don't have to pay their players. So if the Mets truly are over budget, they still won't feel that pinch. Also, even if the Mets are looking to trade Gee for a player who'll make close to the minimum, if even that, they still want to obtain the best player possible, even if circumstances limit their options. Also, assuming the Mets need to reduce their current payroll level, their salary dump might not necessarily be evident simply from their pending Gee trade. We'll need to look at all of their upcoming trades in totality to determine whether they might be dumping salary. It might be easier to simply look at their payroll a few months from now to come to any conclusions.

Re: Gee, it's been great but you have 7-10 days to pack

If it was strictly about payroll reduction I'm unsure of why they'd sign Cuddyer instead of just trading Gee, whenever that is, for an OFer? I mean hell, there's probably a Cuddyer type player out there that someone would offload for Gee.

Re: Gee, it's been great but you have 7-10 days to pack

The problem with Geetrading is that the signing of Scherzer was supposed to tighten up the pitching market as teams rush after next-best options. But by Scherzer signing with an already pitching-rich team, it ends up likely sending somebody (possibly Jordan Zimmerman) into the trade market to compete with Gee.

However, with Ryan Vogelsong going to the 'Stros, then the Giants have a real need to find another starter and that is one of the teams to which Gee seems to be mentioned in the same breath as.

Well, half on the line. Shields is still hovering out there and Joelmon said Shields' availability was what was holding up any Geetrading.

Re: Gee, it's been great but you have 7-10 days to pack

This is sorta 1990 all over. They had six starters then, and Cashen spent all offseason trying to move one, but couldn't find his price.

They went through spring not knowing every day if someone would be dealt off, while Johnson delayed a decision about who would be demoted to the bullpen. Unfortunately sticking with his never-rewarded faith in Aguilera, he decided to open the season with Darling in the pen, promising that he would get starts as the season progressed, and Ojeda spent some time in the pen.

You might'v figured that someone would get injured and it would sort itself out. But nobody did, and Ojeda and Darling alternated a month in and and a month out of the rotation. Both were miserable, unable to find a groove, and feeling their careers slipping away a little earlier than they may have expected. Both had their worst seasons as Mets, with Ojeda openly admitting to drinking hard and driving his bike all night (hopefully not at the same time).

I have no problem if they keep Gee and use him as the alternative starter. Redundancy is great, but they're not exactly flying blind without him, having the number 10 prospect in all of baseball waiting in the wings with 26 AAA starts already under his belt, and Montero and possibly Gorski or Mazzoni before you get to him. There's even talk about opening the season with Montero in the MLB bullpen, ready to step in and start as needed.

They may trade Gee and they made trade Gee for future, rather than present, assets (and therefore cheaper ones), but they clearly want to move a pitcher because a number-six pitcher who could be number-three on another team is a luxury that's worth more to that other team than to the Mets.

So with Shields landing in San Diego, do we re-start the Dillon Gee trade clock now? Is a surplus Washington starter now the new James Shields? Will Dillon Gee ever be traded? Does anyone want Dillon Gee on their team anyway? Does all this trade talk hurt Dillon Gee's feelings? Was Dillon Gee's chin merkin the worst facial hair in the history of the franchise?
