Mets on the Air in 2015

Edgy MD
Jan 20 2015 12:25 PM

Sports Bidness Daily just announced that the Yankees have struck a deal with WPIX to broadcast 21 home games a year for the next four years.

WPIX, of course, apart from dishing out a generous diet of Two and Half Men reruns, also broadcasts 25 Mets games a year. Not sure if this means the Mets getting dumped for the Yankees again, or if the two will be sharing a broadcast partner.

Have the teams ever shared a broadcast partner? Have the Mets erred in failing to insist on an exclusivity clause in their contract?

Does a return to WWOR beckon, if not now then later?

Re: Mets on the Air in 2015

Those MFY games shown on 'Free' TV tended to fall mostly on weekdays (Tuesdays in particular it seemed to me) in recent years while NYM PIX games tended towards weekends .
Now maybe that was dictated by the times that the station had open rather than from club preferences, but the free games are rare enough in either case to where it's certainly possible that the two teams could co-exist on one channel in the same season.

And I sure hope that the Yanx didn't issue a press release to announce this, coming as it did on the day after they failed to even try for Max Scherzer!!

I'd be all set to go all-SNY. I bet Fman would be too.

Of course, my dream is that they open up MLB.TV for locals and I cut out cable all together.

But yeah, coexisting for now seems like what's gonna happen.

Giants and MFYs shared Channel 11 in the 1950s. I mention that to show it can be done, but it occurs to me that one of them left town eventually.

Goodbye MFYs. Good luck wherever.

We didn't have TV back then, but I remember it as Yankees on Channel 11 (Ballantine and White Owl), Dodgers on Channel 9 (our had has never lost its skill), Giants on Channel 5 (Piels and Chesterfield). Dodgers on radio on WMGM, along with Warmup Time, Sports Extra, and Today's Baseball.

Re: Mets on the Air in 2015

Per WPIX-TV's history of itself.

The station's association with Major League Baseball started only 21 days after the station first went on the air. On July 6, 1948 WPIX aired a game between rivals the New York Giants and the Brooklyn Dodgers. And WPIX camera crews began their dominate telecasts of top Madison Square Garden events. By the end of the stations second year, WPIX led all stations with remote telecast of baseball, Rangers’ hockey, football, Knicks basketball, boxing, wrestling, and stock car races. The New York Giants started in 1949 and the Yankees in 1951 on WPIX.

The station teamed with the Yankees from 1951 through 1998. And when, after nine seasons on WPIX, the NY Giants went to the West Coast in 1957, the station quickly signed a record-breaking contract with the Yankees to televise over 140 ball games at home and on the road. The contract for over 400 programming hours was at the time the largest single time sale in the history of the medium. For 47 years, the station was the broadcast home of the New York Yankees. And since 1999, it has been the Mets that have made WPIX a baseball destination.

Re: Mets on the Air in 2015

Having given this more thought, a MFY move to WPIX may be the impetus to get all of their games, both MFY and Met, on to the local airwaves. The majority of baseball fans in this town are YLDBs and I think they'd end up piping in that channel for all the games. The WWOR MFY games have always been carried on local channels here in the past.

well based on him being not Bobby O at this point is good enough for me.

I can't say I've heard him do any serious analysis, but the interviews he gave while he was here seemed like he'd be at least decent.

At any rate, I don't see him followed Ojeda's talk radio philosophy of "pick a topic and yell about it for the entire show' angle.

This. Ojeda's famed research amounted to "I'm going to harp on this thing I read about regardless of its pertinence or truth."

Figueroa's come off in interviews as bright, reflective, and superarticulate; plus, he squeezed the toothpaste tube bone-dry, in terms of maximizing his talent, so I'd imagine he knows quite a bit about the armcraft.

Uncle Cliffy is supposedly also in the running. If his MLB Network gigs are any indication, he'd be clubby and personable... with an anaphylactic allergic reaction to anything with the whiff of statistical analysis.

Yeah, Figueroa is a native NYer (Abraham Lincoln HS - Brooklyn) so I'm sure that angle appeals to SNY brass. He also came via Brandeis Univ so, baseball scholarship and all, you wouldn't figure him to be a total dummy.

Cliffy's been doing some work for the Marlins, at least on a part-time basis, for a couple of years now. At first was kind of dorky/jocky and cliche-heavy but seems to be getting better with time and has snagged some time on MLBN as a result.
I believe he lives in So-Fla so you wonder how much he'd be committed to NYC on a full-time basis, but I guess if the money's right ...

IIRC, Billy Wagner let the Figueroa family use his private box so they could watch Figgy's Mets debut.

I think that Cliff Floyd was in the running for Josh Lewin's job before the fan base made it clear that we tune in to listen to Josh and Howie no matter how the team is doing.

Damn. Faint praise.

For my money, he's been dorky-funny, insightful, and a solid-plus-plus play-by-play guy when he's giving Howie a blow. But he's worth said money alone for how he's rejuvenated Howie, who sounds like a Howie-and-a-half over the last two years.

I really like Cliffy still. I worry that that would change a lot if I saw him talking about what "they should be doing" more often.

I seem to recall Figueroa being kind of a proto-Dickey in that he came off as unusually pensive and articulate, except he didn't have an unhittable pitch and, honestly, I can't recall a single pensive or articulate thing he said while he was here, which doesn't differentiate him much from the Pat Misches and Tim Reddings with whom he shared rotation time.

Oh, except for the game when the Nationals were lighting up either him or another Met (probably him) and he groused about their "softball girl" cheerleading in the dugout, which struck me as STFU if you can't get them out.

Caught him once or twice on MLBN and thought, "he looks familiar...oh yeah, Nelson Figueroa..."

Bobby O defends ownership and seems to cryptically dis Sandy even though he doesn't specifically name him.

It's not quite clear (to me anyway) what it is in particular he's getting at here: need "winning attitude" in the clubhouse and all that.
Also Martino's opening: "News of Bob Ojeda’s departure from SNY last Thursday left Mets fans stunned and disappointed — a natural reaction, given Ojeda’s passion, preparation and candor as a studio analyst over the past six years." is certainly not a universal sentiment (even on this board) yet gets passed off as if it is.

Rubin: WOR has offered its pregame and postgame host job to Illinois native Wayne Randazzo, sources told ESPNNewYork.com.
The role will include fill-in play-by-play. Randazzo would succeed Seth Everett, who held the role last season.

Some of that play-by-play fill-in will probably come early due to the Islander success this year.

From Wayne's website:
Wayne Randazzo is headed into his second season as the play-by-play broadcaster of the Kane County Cougars (Class A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs) after spending his first four years in pro ball as the lead broadcaster for the Mobile BayBears (Class AA Affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks). Wayne is also currently an update anchor for Chicago's Sports Radio 670 the Score, the flagship station of the Chicago White Sox.
Wayne has hosted and co-hosted as a fill-in on the weekly baseball program, Hit & Run, as well as the pregame and postgame shows on the Chicago White Sox Radio Network. He's also worked in various anchor and reporting roles for Chicago’s ESPN 1000, WGN Radio and the Illinois Radio Network.
Additionally, Wayne has performed in numerous roles as a television play-by-play broadcaster for the Big Ten Network, Chicago's Comcast Network 100 and for the Alabama High School Athletics Association covering football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and softball.

Something to think about as internet grumbles about Matt Harvey's second start not being televised.

Is there any reason, when the team owners also own a network anchored around team programming, that you shouldn't carry every spring training game? At least every spring training home game?

I guess the setup and staffing are somewhat prohibitive. For the games they do shoot, are those with MLB network equipment or SNY equipment?

seems that way.

I think "lots of folks" might be stretching it. But a lot of these people are the ones that also wish they'd televise the minor league games on the backfields via a streaming cam.

The Mets, generally, televise every home spring game with the exception of the occasional preemption for amateur hoops around my birthday.

Never thought I would miss the baseball trifecta of beer, cars, and lawn equipment.

But ambulance chasers, fake charities, and the corrections officer union telling me about the guy who raped my dawta is feeling kinda bush.

For the most part, the regional advertising I get on SNY is very
low budget... I don't live that far from Citi as the crow flies. I think
they have trouble getting high-paying advertisers on both tv and radio.

Maybe if they sign up a few of those high paying advertisers they'll be able to buy a radio transmitter that sends a signal that can be pointed toward Western Connecticut.

50,000 Watts of clear channel should reach you easily. Have your
wife move the antenna around while your tuning in!

I don't really care about WOR's advertising, they paid for the rights
to broadcast the Mets and their revenues from that mean nothing to
me or the team. SNY's cheesy advertisers are a disappointment to
me because the Mets own the station and would benefit from some
higher profile advertising than they do from men's penile problems
and asbestos litigation settlement fund lawyer ads.

I know it should. I can even pick up a Buffalo Radio Station in my car driving home at night. But when I drive home, I can't get WOR-AM. I think it has to do with how the signal is aimed. I lose the signal around Katonah and never pick it up again all the way home. And no matter where I place my home radio, I still can't get the station.
WOR says it is the "flagship of the Mets network". I wonder of that network includes any stations closer to me.
Sigh.

I checked this out once and I found at one point that two stations relaying the Mets feed were WTLA 1200 out of Syracuse and WAVZ 1300 out of New Haven. Give it a shot one night.

Smart Phone. MLB At-Bat app. I often don't even bother switching my car from Bluetooth to AM anymore.

Is the 710 Omni-Directional? I'm not up on that.

Is my memory messed up or was there a time where we did not like Nelson Figueroa?

Maybe I'm confusing him with Heath Bell.

I mean, he was a Quad-A guy that was starting to many games, but I don't think we necessarily disliked him.

Both he and his wife ripped the Mets at one time or another, frustrated at being called up and then passed through waivers a few times. Even as they backed off, more than a few Mets fans were with him.
