Some feedback to the hardworking admins... the posts and signatures and the posts that follow all seem to flow together in a big river of bluish-gray same. Maybe an alteration to the theme that allows for a bit more distinction? Just muh $.02 cents. Thanks for all the good work, yall.

This is the default template; we haven't done any modifications to it. The recent Valadius problems may have come from the Caribbean template that we've been using, so as a safety measure I switched us to the default. Whether we stay with this as is, modify it, go back to Caribbean, or try something else entirely is yet to be determined.

Yes, that was the complaint the last time around, which led me to discover the Caribbean template we've been using for the last ten years or so. I also think it can use a little more contrast, especially with the thread icons; it's not as clear which threads have new posts. I may tinker with this one a little bit.

If you see any weird colors or penguins or anything in the next few days, don't worry, and don't assume that anything is permanent. I'm experimenting with trying to get the profile section (with our names and avatars) to float to the left instead of the right, and I sometimes use colors to let me know if my changes are having any effect at all.

In your style sheet, look for class .postbody. It's set as 76% width. changing that should take care of the space allocation on the right side.

Yes, thanks, I did see that. When I get a chance I'll change it to 100 per cent. I thought I had to leave it at 76% to account for the 24% that's being used up on the left side, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

It depends on what you want to do. You don't have to specify 100% - just remove the width property completely, and it will default to the full width.

Oh, and try adding something like this to the style sheet:

div.postprofileCPF {
float: left;
width: 200px;
padding-right: 20px;
border-right: 1px solid #ccc;
margin-right: 20px;
}

It will slide the message section up, and even with the member's profile.

On the 'white' background posts of the alternate white/blue boxes it's sometimes not so easy to separate the 'Quote' section from the answer text. Much easier to distinguish on the blues.
Could those possibly be another color other than white? Maybe even just a slightly different shade would work better.

Re: Whoah!

when viewing a forum, and seeing the listing of all the thread topics, for instance, "Woah" by mets-willets point, there are three pages of discussion on that topic. these pages are indicated with little numbered squares which show up in the right-hand side of the frame which also includes the topic title and the author of said topic.

because of the dynamic sizing of the frames, particularly the title frame, the page listing for a given topic is all the way in the middle of my screen, far, far away from the title of the topic. for a single-page topic, this is, of course, not an issue. for a multi-page topic, i tend to click on the topic title, and my eyes do not wander across my screen to find the page listing. so i always start on the first page, and have to then fix it once i'm reading hte topic and wondering why nobody's saying anything new.

on the old format, i think the page listing was closer to the topic title, possibly immediately following it or under it, or something. here' it's floating out in centerfield when the place i'm inclined to click on is in left. extraneous info such as the last post are in right field, and the number of posts is played by an extra outfielder on loan from a softball game, in right-center. must be a big lefty batter up - i'd better finish my beer.

anyways, if there was any way to bring hte listing of hte pages for a given topic in the forum view closer to the topic title, it would be really really helpful.

thanks!

I don't see any "little orange rectangle to the left of the topic title".

Zvon: If you look at the "last post" column, you can determine which member posted the last post in that thread. To the right of the member's name, is the outline of a tiny box, or rectangle. Clicking on that box will take you to the "last post".

The orange box (circled in yellow) takes you to the first unread post. This box only appears when there is one or more post in the thread that you haven't read yet.

The white box (circled in green) takes you to the most recent post in the thread, whether you've read it or not. I think the orange box is more useful because if there are eight posts, for example, that you haven't read, it will take you to the first of the eight. The white box will take you to the last of those eight, causing you to miss seven posts.

2) I'm finding posts within the same thread where the more recent ones can be edited as always (meaning my own posts of course) but older posts on a previous page are lacking the edit button function so they can't. I'm not aware of any time limit on editing posts. Maybe it's after someone has replied?

No, because I CAN still edit my midnight post from last night (even though it has bee replied to at this point) but all of my other posts in this thread lack the edit button - implying that you can't edit once a post falls to a previous page or there's some sort of time limit after which you can no longer do so. Or maybe it's just me (check you own posts from earlier in this or other threads) and I've fallen into some kind of CPF worm hole.

As far as the other thing, what I meant was that there's no Next/Previous thread buttons like we had in previous set-ups.
It's not a huge deal, but it was a helpful feature.

still testing.

now i'm going to try to edit the prior post...

OE: well, i could edit the prior post. i did notice that as soon as there was a subsequent post, i no longer had the ability to delete my prior post. we'll see if anything changes if i remember to stop back in here.

OFE (on further edit): even after my little buddy m.e.t.b.o.t. posted, i still have the ability to edit this post. it must be time-based.

m.e.t.b.o.t. enjoys tests. m.e.t.b.o.t. frequently performs very well on tests, except for those which test physical capability. m.e.t.b.o.t. is very small, and lacks strength and endurance. m.e.t.b.o.t. is excellent at repeated movements, as the gears and linkages which control m.e.t.b.o.t. are confined to a fairly narrow range of motion.

Re: Whoah!

While we're at it, has anyone figured out why the "Birthday Today" line doesn't show up at the bottom of the Board Index page? Or will we have to wait until its someone's birthday again to find out?

Yeah, the no-deleting thing was a feature of past boards (and makes sense if you think about it) but I don't think there was ever something which prevented you from editing past posts.
The thing to do is to check other threads where you know you made a post some time ago that's now fallen to a previous page and see if the Edit button is present or not.

Why aren't your posts in machine language?

Re: Whoah!

m.e.t.b.o.t. is generally not fluent in machine language, as much of m.e.t.b.o.t.'s capabilities are defined by mechanical interactions between an eclectic mix of parts scavenged from discarded vcrs, 8-track players, and one shock-proof discman, as well as a fair amount of twine. m.e.t.b.o.t. does not ascribe to any known or consistently applied machine language, and struggles mightily with human languages as well. fortunately for m.e.t.b.o.t. human language has a far more flexible vocabulary, and indeed humans are more forgiving and tolerant of the transposition of similar terms, whereas such a transposition can have disastrous effects when communicating with machines. this happened recently when m.e.t.b.o.t. attempted to upload some images to the suspended condensed atmospheric water vapor, and accidentally caused the deterioration of several security protocols on the receiving terminal, resulting ultimately in the release of numerous images of notable humans without their decorative and protective coverings.
