Rivalries are heating up within the GL Corps, as two of their great human heroes match rings in the Bronze/Modern-Age Superhero Bracket of the DC/Indie Conference.

How He Came to Be:Stew was selected by the guardians to be a backup human Green Lantern, working behind Hal Jordan. He was trained in the ring's usage by Katma Tui, the Green Lantern of the planet Korugar, and when Jordan slowed down in the eighties, Stewart got to put down the clipboard and get the featured role. How He Came to Be:After Hal Jordan went nuts and killed most of the Green Lantern Corps, the last surviving Lantern gave Rayner the last remaining ring.

Song I Think Of:"Gold"Song I Think Of:"Substitute"
Supernatural Powers:He's a Green Lantern, and that means he wields a ring that gives him flight, some invulnerability, and the defining ability to generate and wield sold "constructs" from his imagination. As an architect, his constructs are recognized by Hal Jordan as more solid and steady than his own.Supernatural Powers:"He too is a Green Lantern, and that means he too wields a ring that gives him flight, some invulnerability, and the defining ability to generate and wield sold ""constructs"" from his imagination. As an artist, his constructs are finely detailed and more realistic representations than those of others. His ring is also DNA coded from what is left of Hal Jordan's so none but those two or a close relative could wield it. He is a rare Green Lantern in that his powers are not affected by the color yellow.
His powers are expanded when he's bonded with his Ion identity, and he cannot only manipulate his constructs, but manipulate reality."
Non-Super Abilities:John's a strong dude and has killed without the aid of the ring. As mentioned, he's an architect employed by a high-tech defense aviation firm, so you know he's, like, Mike Brady-level with the architecture.Non-Super Abilities:Dude is a good artist. This is no small thing, as it has been explained as the reason he is not weakened by yellow, as artists face their fear every time they submit work.
Stuff:The ring of power. It's all you need. First thing I'd do with one of those is mentally project a Superman cage.Stuff:His ring is the BEST ring.
Weaknesses:He needs the ring. Plus Greenies are powerless before the color yellow. He's also considered to have a bit of a chip on his shoulder.Weaknesses:Having raised in rank and achieved White Lantern status, he may wield TOO much power for his own good — more than he can handle.

I know John Stewart a little bit, Kyle Raymer not at all, so I voted for Stewart.

Interesting stories/characters are a wash. Stewart was/is a good Lantern. But Rayner is the most powerful Lantern, and that trumps good/not great. I suppose.

Oa help me, for all that I've seen/read of 'em, I'm not really a Lantern guy, I think.

Don't know either well. Didn't even know there were 2 of em. I voted for the guy whose description wasn't cut off.

Hal Jordan is the only Green Lantern worth shit and Alan whats his face was at least the original. the inclusion of these two guys as well shows the lack of character depth that DC has when compared to Marvel.

on edit- to make that clearer, i mean the "depth" of their lineup of characters, not the "depth" of character ie the writing of the characters personalities/histories

Re: CPF WotS, Rd. 1: Gr Lantern (Stewart) v. Gr Lantern (Ray

When they turned Hal Jordan int a genocidal maniac, i wrote a letter of complaint to DC that was published in the Comic Buyers Guide. My basic premise was, yes, DC owned the character (because companies used work-for-hire doctrine to rob creators of their work), and they were legally free to do as they wish, and yes, it is important to give a new generation a hero that is uniquely theirs and not just grandpa's GL (after all, that's how Jordan became the silver age GL), BUT...

The value of a character is not created exclusively by DC, but by the PUBLIC in its response to a character over time (in terms of buying comics, AV adaptations, subsidiary publishing uses, merchandising, etc). The public invests not just its money but its emotional involvement in a character that has endured for 40 years, and its that emotional response that invests the character with "secondary meaning" (as they say in Trademark Law). So a company like DC holds those characters in a quasi-public trust, with an obligation to the public to treat those characters with some respect.

So it was fine to put Hal Jordan out to pasture (as much as it saddens me). They could have killed him off nobly (as they did Barry Allen), or put him on an alternate Earth (as with Allan Scott)... hell, they could have given him cancer (ala Mar-Vell), or just let him die in a pointless freak accident. but to strip him of his dignity in such a sick, cynical, ugly way, to turn him into PARALLAX, a genocidal monster, inconsistent with his character for the prior decades, is a violation of that public trust. So shame on them. Or words to that effect.

I wasn't the only one to react that way, and a few years later, DC tried to make up for their colossal blunder by giving Jordan a redemptive sacrificial death, and then brought him back as the Spectre, but the damage was done. They later brought Jordan back and ret-conned the whole Parallax debacle, but I never forgave Kyle Rayner for being the kid they sacrificed Hal Jordan for.

Fuck you, Kyle Rayner.

Besides, John Stewart hit that:

Stewart is the Green King. I get the feeling that there weren't strong feelings one way or the other.
