Little Shorts: Soccer Ball in 2k15

Holy crap, some giant-slaying going on in the FA Cup!

Man United escaped Cambridge Utd with a draw, forcing a replay the struggling Red Devils neither wanted or expected.

Then today Chelsea, Man City, Southampton, Spurs, and Swans all crash out, with Liverpool currently 0-0 against Bolton. Half of the top 10 teams in the Premier League have their asses kicked out of the FA Cup in shock morning! The best tournament anywhere.

Holders Arsenal looking pretty effing good, at the moment.

Re: Little Shorts: Soccer Ball in 2k15

Do the big boys use their top lineups in this thing or are they sitting certain guys for what they expect will be an "easy" round so as to have them cleaned, pressed, and ready to go later on?
I mean, Chelsea averages

FA Cup is definitely an opportunity for the big clubs to rotate guys, especially if they're still in the running in the League and still playing in Champions League, as well.

That said, the benches for Chelsea and Man City in particular, are stronger than most sides in the world. Chelsea still ran on Fabregas and Hazard to try to grab a win and failed, and City started with most of their studs. Crazier still is that both of those losses came at home for the big boys, where they're both damn hard to beat. Southhampton and Spurs lost at home, too. Wacko.

Re: Little Shorts: Soccer Ball in 2k15

Middlesbrough IS damn decent (a comfortable second in the Championship, with the league's tightest D), with a passel of top-flight loaners (like Chelsea's Patrick Bamford, who scored the first goal today).

As for the others, man... I got nothing. Youngun Christensen and-- goal notwithstanding-- Gary Cahill apparently had miserable days on the Chelsea back line. (FWIW, there's been a pretty sizable segment of the Blues faithful calling for a Terry-Kurt Zouma center back pair; Cahill's been intermittently piss-poor for a while now.)

How about Mourinho going to the Bradford dressing room and shaking hands and congratulating all the dudes? I'm sure he was trying to motivate his guys in his own way, but dare I use the word "class" in the same sentence with Jose Mourinho?

Arsenal and West Ham through in today's action. 5th Round Draw (Sweet 16) is Monday night. Here's who's left standing in this interesting field:

1. Crystal Palace
2. Cambridge United or Manchester United
3. Blackburn Rovers
4. Bradford City
5. Derby County
6. Preston North End or Sheffield United
7. West Bromwich Albion
8. Aston Villa
9. Reading
10. Liverpool or Bolton Wanderers
11. Leicester City
12. Arsenal
13. Rochdale or Stoke City
14. Sunderland or Fulham
15. West Ham United
16. Middlesbrough

R U GUYS READY FOR THE BIG GAME THIS WEEKEND!??!

Chelsea v Man City tomorrow at 9:30am. Chelsea might be without both Costa and Fabregas. The Citizens have been struggling lately and should maybe think about benching the scuffling Vincent Kompany.

Seahawks/Pats? Pssssh. 1 versus 2 here, babay.

More importantly for City: no Toure. (They're winless without him this season.)

Should be interesting.

Re: Little Shorts: Soccer Ball in 2k15

So as a thank-you for volunteering with our local youth soccer league (and as a ploy to build an email database) we'll be attending the home debut of the new NYCFC club this weekend at MFY Stadium.

How am I supposed to feel about this?

On the one hand, I very much despise things having to do with the MFYs. And proud to have never seen a game in the Bronx in my life till now.

On the other, I never warmed to the idea of rooting for a "local" team that plays in New Jersey and names itself after a lame "energy drink" so the whole MLS has missed me completely so far. I suppose at some point I'd be rooting for the club that's established in Brooklyn or Queens but that hasn't happened. Thanks a lot, Fred.

Can anyone offer a quick primer? I know they tied their 1st game in Tampa, and that they'll be playing New England. Is this an "expansion club" like the Mets once were, or what? Should I root against them?

Re: Little Shorts: Soccer Ball in 2k15

I guess they're technically an 'expansion team' but that whole league is run so socialistically that I don't think that term means what it once did.

I just like the fact that the soccer games are supposedly ruining the field for baseball at YSIII.
I believe it was Teixeira who said sharing a field with them "is going to suck"

I think they will be having a pre-game ceremony to retire the #2.

Since they are co-owned by Manchester City and the Yankees, I've nicknamed them the Mankees.

I actually watched their first game, they are awful, as is to be expected I guess, some of the defending is comical...at least in Orlando is looked decent of an actual field. Villa was terrible...again, first game....I do wonder what he thinks of his teammates, from Barca to this???... As a team that is part owned by the fucking yankees AND Man City I can never root for them

Still NE should be decent to watch

Re: Little Shorts: Soccer Ball in 2k15

We just got back. Scene entering and exiting the stadium was a complete fustercluck, with no organization and way too few ticket takers, everybody filing through metal detectors that weren't even monitored. It was obvious the organization badly underestimated the crowd or their ability to process it. I was there with Wifey and Lunchapil and worried about crowds surging, fights, hooligans etc., and if you ever wanted to bring a knife or bomb into the park today was your day. I became briefly famous for tweeting a picture of the chaotic scene but by the time my 15 minutes were up we'd finally gotten through and to our seats, literally as the first seconds of the game ticked off. If you go, leave early. 4 train up there and back was a madhouse too, as was the platform. I don;t know if its always that effed up at MFY Stadium but what a dump.

Our seats were on the 300 level and would have been in shallow left field for baseball, but just off the midline for soccer. They laid turf of the baselines where the pitch went over, draw a straight line behind the pitchers mound and right through the 2nd to 3rd base line and that was the sideline.

The game was pretty good! NYCFC was generally more aggressive early but once they got a goal, New England was the aggressor, and I felt like NY was lucky to get through the half without an equalizer. One thing that was clear was that David Villa of NY was the best player on the field, and that New England didn't have a superstar of their own. Villa was setting up plays that didn't even happen, you could just see he was a class above even his own teammates.

I thought both clubs played really sloppy to begin the second half, a lot of collisions and so forth. I dont know if this was good coaching or what, but NY made two changes and the guys inserted instantly made the biggest 2 plays of the game. First guy gets taken down on a breakaway leading to a NE red card; then they switched in this Mullins guy who within 5 seconds gets a great pass from Vila to score. Goal was all Villa who had a defender in his face and still gave a perfectly timed and placed assist.

I was actually impressed with how little they douched up the presentation in-stadium, though I suspect that was also because they probably hadn't prepared. MFY stadium concessions, bathrooms and exit staircases all suck.

New England superstar Jermaine Jones is on the DL right now. But it's generally true that the Revs are not a team built around superstars.

My understanding is they got to the finals last year, yeah?

I'm not saying they sucked, and my newbie perspective ought not to be trusted, but neither squad looked to me like they were bound for glory this season.

I learned this morning that Mullins guy who scored for NY was plucked from NE in the expansion draft.

So I'm going to guess that for Steven Gerrard -- soon to be departing captain playing in one of his final games at home and coming in as a sub to start the second half in a 0-1 game against the main rival -- getting sent off via a red card 45 seconds after you come on wasn't part of the coach's halftime instructions.

Summary: Douchebag fans throw flare(s) that hit an opposition player during warm-up. Hijinks ensure.

The most extraordinary thing about the whole incident is how a fan could throw a lit flare with such accuracy over 250ft, yet Lucas Duda couldn't accurately throw a baseball 90ft.

Well that honeymoon didn't last long. But I guess that's what happens when you go from league champ to hovering close to the relegation zone in less than half a season.
Probably doesn't help that he comes across as the Portuguese Bill Belichek only without the wins and not nearly as personable.

So it seems that the U.S. Men's National team has worked their way into a virtual 'Must-Win' situation vs Guatemala tonight in order to qualify for the World Cup in 2018.
They lost to the Guatas last week (on the road) and another loss tonight in Ohio would drop them to 1-1-2 in group play and make it very difficult to finish in the top two.

Leicester City FC are officially the English Premier League champions in only the second season since being promoted into the top division, beating 5000-to-1 odds. It's Leicester City's first top level championship in the 132-year history of the club. It's also the first time since 1995 that EPL champion is not named Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, or Manchester City.

It's the Premier League standings, only with NCAA tournament participants subbing for the team names next to the logos.

Knocking Spurs off/clinching the league for Leicester was maybe the one solace I've taken from this misbegotten Chelsea campaign.

So now that the EPL season is done (except for the postponed due to fake bomb game at Mun U on Sunday to be made up tomorrow) they officially say goodbye to Newcastle, Norwich City, and also Aston Villa who were so bad this year I think they clinched relegation around Christmas sometime.
Promoted are Burnley and Middlesbrough, and then there's a four-way playoff to determine who gets the third spot between Brighton, Hull City, Derby County, and Sheffield Wednesday.
Not sure how long that's been going on but I guess that serves as an interest (and revenue) generating mini-tournament for the fans of the four teams involved, although it kind of suxx for Brighton who finished comfortably in 3rd place in the Champions League (Division 2) and a whopping 15 points ahead of Sheffield yet have no advantage in the short series that will determine who gets EPL status for next season.

Copa America thus far:
U.S. win their group by virtue of Saturday night's win over Paraguay (despite playing a man down for nearly the entire second half) and so will advance and face Ecuador as their first knockout stage opponent.
And, stunningly, Brazil is out as they managed just 1 point and no goals out of their matches with Ecuador (0-0 draw) and Peru (a just completed 0-1 loss)

Pre-tourney reports warned that this was not Brazil's best squad as they're 'saving' some of their younger players so as to look good for the home crowd in the upcoming Olympic tourney, but you know they weren't planning on losing to neighboring little brother Peru and going back home so early - assuming they, y'know, actually go home after this.

And now Belgium has been knocked off by Wales. Wales!!
Not that Belgium is a huge country but they are considered a major soccer powerhouse and Wales was one of the countries, like Iceland, allowed in this year only through the generosity of a newly expanded tournament.
But while the power teams were most likely expecting that these small fries were going to be grateful for the 'privilege' of playing with the big boys then quietly go away in the opening round, not only did several of them survive the opening round but now they're eliminating giants in the knockoff rounds.
