2015 CPF Scrabble Classic

I forget the last time we did this, but it's time to do it again.

Check in here if you have the guts and I'll set up a bracket. I guess you need to play through the app/facebook.

Happy to take suggestions on style (I like double elimination to account for the odd bad-luck game).

Re: 2015 CPF Scrabble Classic

OK, GAMES ON

Following are seeds based on this afternoon's ratings on the scrabble app:
1. Chad Ochoseis
2. LeiterWagner
3. Willets
4. FMan
5. Metmarathon
6. Edgy
7. JCL
8. Seawolf
9. Ceetar
10. Smg
11. Kong76

I have an 11-team double elim bracket here, easiest probably to print and fill out you own but here's a photo of mine:

As a ground rule, let's try to allow the lower seed to take the first turn (regardless of who challenges who), do our best to keep the games moving, agree up front a "nudge" isn't rude if necessary, and be sure both players understand that its a tourney game.

I want to hear a lot of trash talk, Bobby O-style postgame breakdowns, etc.

First round can begin any time: Ceetar challenges Seawolf, Kong challenges Edgy, SMG challenges JCL. marathon challenge Fman. GO!

Michael Donato (I forget which alias you have): my three-year-old daughter accidentally (or at least I think it was an accident) started a game with you. It's not tournament-related, in case you were wondering why a game got started. Otherwise JCL get bonus points for scoring big with a baseball term, as he dropped "hurlers" on me for 83 points to get right back in the game.

Re: 2015 CPF Scrabble Classic

Plagued by a slow start on both sides, I finally hit stride with HURLERS and went onto a 440-319 victory. Key may have been me drawing both blanks while he drew both Cs.

SMG awaits the loser of the forthcoming Chad Ochoseis-Seawolf/Ceetar battle while I now challenge LWFS.

I'm neck and neck with the Konger.

Double-blank question: If you're holding double blanks, do you tend to go for the bingo right away, or do you look to play off one of them in a 35-40 pt word and hope your next rack with the remaining blank still has a bingo in it?

I'll try the 35-40 point word with one and move on. The blank practically guarentees the next rack won't be that horrible. If you bingo it right off you risk getting IVOOIUA or something.

Either way, I don't think you needed to forfeit. I'd be happy to start over with a new game with no teachers.

Lucky with a 2-blank draw and easy triple-line bingo REDATING. Later, scored TURISTA. Strategically placed V's and an entire dead quarter of a board prevented the comeback.

Is the Ceetar-Ochoseis game still happening? 3 matchups now waiting on that outcome. Also need an update on Seawolf-LWFS?

Edgy (6) callenges Ochoseis (1). Winner to face Willets (3).

Winners from those two prongs meet for the right to face Ceetar (9) in the losers final, with the winner then needing to beat JCL (7) twice for the coveted CPF Goya(R) Scrabble Cup presented by Old Dominion Freightlines (R)

I drew some seemingly excellent racks in the early going against Ochoseis, but wasn't able to convert any of them into a bingo. (Had I had the Teacher turned on, I imagine I would have been embarrassed.)

This is where I usually beat myself, trying to keep the bulk of a good rack intact by playing off 12-15 pointers, waiting for the magilla to present itself to me, often falling 40-90 points behind while the opportunity never comes.

So this time, I'm practicing learning play 30-pointers and stay close, while pivoting to new strategies and new racks.

Still behind, though.

Congrats Seawolf, you've earned a rematch of your first-round game with Ceetar in the losers' bracket final (Ceetear goes first). Winner to face me, twice if necessary, to crown the 2015 Scrabble World Title and associated crown, sash and gifts.

let's see if I remember what Scrabble is still.

and it's over. I lose 369-317. Was trailing most of the game by ~50, managed to crawl close hooking Sprout to Medic but he hooked on XIS for AXIS/GNARL for the TW and basically the match. I should've seen that one.

Re: 2015 CPF Scrabble Classic

Seawolf forces the "if" game with a 364-351 victory, secured by a 39-point late-game triple, VISE. Scores were tight throughout, with lots of 2 and 3-letter plays punctuated with a Bingo for both players -- he got JOLTERS, I got CONDENSE, each with the help of a blank -- so the final comes down to a single game.

It all comes down to this! There's no tomorrow now! All that matters is who wants it more!

If JCL sold tickets to this finale, his fans would have left around the sixth inning.

My offense picked a bad time to imitate the 2015 Mets. Meantime I'm dealing free passes like Alex Torres.

Re: 2015 CPF Scrabble Classic

Congrats to new champion Seawolf who dismantled me 419-281 in the final.

Key moment came early in this one I cleverly but dangerously played the parallel-rich MAKEUP on a board with almost nowhere else to play; Wolfie responded even more fiercely than I anticipated with ZOEA for 64. I exchanged or played off shitty hands till I finally had bingo material (LATRINE/RETINAL/ENTRAIL)only to be blocked by his STORIES play.

Good work by the Wolf to bury me deeper every chance he got (OFFERS, HONES, ZAIRE).

Final standings:
Seawolf 7-1 (7 in a row after an opening-round loss)
JCL 4-2
Ceetar 3-2
Willets 2-2
Ochoseis 3-2
FMan 1-2
Kong 1-2
Edgy 1-2
Marathon 0-2
SMG 0-2
LWFS 0-2

Till next year's action-packed event, this is rang announcer Jim McCune.

Re: 2015 CPF Scrabble Classic

Someday, I'm going to find out what ZOEAE are.

Good matchups, JCL, despite the score. Once I had a lead in the first one, I was playing defense the whole time, giving you nothing. The second game I kept pulling bingos but either not seeing them or being unable to play them. Both ZAIRE and OFFERS had bingos on my rack but I couldn't find any place to put them and decided to just take the TW.

So, if the old sports' cliche is correct, Seawolf wanted it more.

He stayed within himself, that's for sure.

I was over there, while my game was over here.
