We have two guys who've never hit the big screen, so Vic will have to choose based on paper. A Golden Age freak vs. a Silver Age weirdo, clashing here in the Indies/SF Heroes Bracket of the DC/Indy Conference.

Name:Plastic ManName:Magnus, Robot Fighter
Aternate Identity(ies):Patrick "Eel" O'Brian; aka Ralph Johns, Edward O Brian, PlasAternate Identity(ies):Magnus
Creator(s):Jack ColeCreator(s):Russ Manning
Place of Birth:Capitol City, USAPlace of Birth:North Am, an apparent future version of the North American continent circa 4000 AD
How He Came to Be:Eel is a crook that who is shot and falls into a vat of plastic chemicals during a robbery. His gang abandons him and he escapes to wander disorientedly. When he's taken in by a kindly monk, he is nursed backed to health. The monk throwing the cops off his scent vows him to turn over a new leaf, and shortly thereafter learns that he chemicals have leaked into his blood system, allowing him to stretch and contort his body in any and all manner of shapes. How He Came to Be:Magnus was raised by a good robot, who taught him how to fight back in an age of full depency on robots by man, and increasing totalitarianism by the metal ones.
Base of Operations:Gotham City, NJ; formerly Capitol City, USA, Mammoth City, USABase of Operations:North Am
Teams/Affiliations:Federal Bureau of Investigation, National Bureau of Investigations, Justice League, All-Star Squadron, Freedom Fighters, Elastic FourTeams/Affiliations:Partnerships more than official teams. He serves as the inspiration for, rather than a member of, an adolescent team called the Outsiders.

Has Been Played By:Taylor MarksHas Been Played By:Nobody!
Could Have Been Played By:Jim CareyCould Have Been Played By:Richard Harrison
Song I Think Of:"Rubber Band Man"Song I Think Of:"The Humans Are Dead"
Supernatural Powers:Plastic Man is supremely malleable, able to change his shape at will and stretch to extreme lenths. He can be hard or soft, or so thin that you don't even realize you're stepping on his ass. All this can produce superhuman strength, reflexes, and invlunerabliity too. His regenerative abilities are such that he was shattered to bits in a Justice League time jump back 3000 years ago, and when they got back to our present, they found out he had almost put himself back together. His mind is also malleable, helping him develop immunity to telepathy.Supernatural Powers:Magnus has superhuman strength and durability. He's not Superman or Hulk or even Captain Britian or anything, but his modest super brawn stands out amidst a humanity that has grown weak and soft.
Non-Super Abilities:He's a reformed thief, and so has the skills of both a thief and a detective, having continued to work undercover after his super-career started.Non-Super Abilities:He has extensive martial arts training. He can karate chop right through robot steel!
Stuff:He's got a costume and goggles that stretch right along with him, yes they do.Stuff:Magnus' best stuff is the robot who raised him, A1, who has also trained him to resist the robot ascendency. He also has a bulit-in receiver that allows him to hear robot-to-robot transmissions. Pretty tricky.
Weaknesses:He can adapt to extreme temperatures, but a sudden change can make him melt to a liquid state or become suddenly very brittle.Weaknesses:He's a mortal dude, flesh and blood in a world of cold steel.

Although he's kind of lame and goofy, I voted for Plastic Man because I've never heard of Magnus.

Re: CPF WotS, Rd. 1: Plastic Man vs. Magnus, Robot Fighter

Plastic Man is so goofy, absurdist, and requiring-of-a-modern-art-execution, it's literally a stretch to put him in the same universe as the rest of the Justice Leaguers. For a minor character, I guess it's pretty cool that his costume has almost never changed. For that, I tip my hat to him, but he's generally an annoying figure to me. Maybe he's more satisfying if you're high.

I had never heard of Magnus, but doing a little research, I was instantly hooked on the artwork, and then the whole milieu. Two thumbs up for him.

Re: CPF WotS, Rd. 1: Plastic Man vs. Magnus, Robot Fighter

part of the point of this whole exercise is to bring up characters that some may not be familiar with, giving folks an opportunity to check them out. Glad you did that with Magnus. He was later revived by VALIANT in the 1990s, in a very good reboot.

A question to Edgy: Who is "Richard Harrison" and why would he be a good Magnus? If he's a cross between Richard Harris and Rex Harrison, then i just don't see it. If he's the guy from "Pawn Stars", then i still don't see it. He sort of strikes me as a Buster Crabbe type.

I have never seen Pawn Stars, and I'm way too terrified of the implications for humanity to get involved in cross-breeding two male dead actors. Could you imagine if some YY-chromosome stagey actor was wandering around? It'd be CHAOS! MAYHEM!

Richard Harrison: Muscle-bound American actor (and sometimes writer/director/producer) who starred in European-produced gladiator-type B-movie fare, mostly in the sixties. Knew how to rock a tunic.

Looks like a southpaw.

A word to the wise: Googling him will lead to some uncomfortable erotic stirrings you may not have known you were capable of feeling.

Re: CPF WotS, Rd. 1: Plastic Man vs. Magnus, Robot Fighter

Magnus always struck me as one of the stupidest superheroes ever (in concept). Punching out robots is just plain stupid; they guy would have broken knuckles after the very first punch. And that's what he did: punch robots. So you were "treated" to one boring fight scene* after another.

Plas, OTOH, is one of the delights of the Golden Age: goofy and fun all around. And as someone pointed out, he was the only superhero (at least until recently) where getting his powers made him a better person than he was without them.

*I've rarely seen any other kind, and can't think of one in comics that wasn't.

Re: CPF WotS, Rd. 1: Plastic Man vs. Magnus, Robot Fighter

i'm voting for plastic man, because i wanna find out how his uniform and goggles can do all the bendy twisty stretchy stuff he can.

unless his uniform is some sort of extension of his own body, like he wraps himself in a suit of his own plastic skin, or something.

because if that uniform technology exists and can be manufactured, well, i think that would be really cool, and could probably solve a number of interesting real world problems.

Magnus doesn't just punch robots, he does open-handed karate chops on them, and just rips 'em to shreds. Wires and transistors everywhere. m.e.t.b.o.t. would know better than to mess with him.

Stupid? Sure, unless you're a super-strengthed badass.

m.e.t.b.o.t is a peaceful robot, built primarily with cheap, thin sheets of stamped metal. low grade metal. and a bunch of leftover vcr scraps. the only menacing component to m.e.t.b.o.t., unless one is a national league pitcher who is unable to effectively swing a baseball bat, is the likelihood of lead and other toxic ingredients in the cheap chinese paint which covers the thin stamped metal sheets.

m.e.t.b.o.t. is programmed to not mess with anything stronger than a carpenter ant. and a weak carpenter ant, at that. carpenter ants are all about strength to weight ratios and m.e.t.b.o.t. does not want to find out if they are strong enough to cart away a skate key, leaving m.e.t.b.o.t. powerless and useless.

m.e.t.b.o.t. has not yet participated in the superhero voting process, but will, on principle, be voting against the robot fighter.

I hear you, m.e.t.b.o.t., but everybody else, look at this artwork. THIS is what you buy comics for!

Re: CPF WotS, Rd. 1: Plastic Man vs. Magnus, Robot Fighter

The spiritual descendant of Alex Raymond, Russ Manning was one of the best artists of the Silver Age. He not only created Magnus, he also drew the definitive Tarzan throughout the 1960s. He died young and they named an award after him and later was inducted posthumously into the comic book hall of fame.

Jack Cole also died young, at his own hand.

So there you go, voters. A vote against Magnus is a vote against a worthy legend.
