Someone (I think batmags) mentioned we should have a pet
thread. Just thought of it seeing a picture of Max on fb.

I've got five cats now. One of them is FeLV and FIV positive, which we found out too late to seperate her.

Check out my facebook page for her!

That's cool, didn't realize you had a separate cat page. I'm
not a cat person, allergic, although I have grown out of that
a bit.

Me too, but I take a lot of meds.

I used to be really bad, my neck would get all rashy if a
cat looked at me. They say some allergies are cyclical, I've
largely outgrown hay fever and stuff like that too.

Kasper wants to go to Bark at the Park Day. He's torn between
wanting a Mets' Fedora or a DeGromm garden gnome.

Re: Cats, dogs, fish, and stuff

You all know about Max, but we basically have a menagerie in our house. One more animal, and we'll have to charge admission...

Our oldest is the reptile expert at the local Petco, and she has brought home a few reptiles that she cares for.

This is Ares - he's a Bearded Dragon, and thinks he rules the roost ;-)

It's funny how well Ares and Max get along.

Our Menagerie started with Athena, a ball python who has an attitude that tells us she remembers that Egyptian royalty used to wear her species like jewelry:

This is from almost two years ago - she's even bigger now, almost 5 feet long...

Re: Cats, dogs, fish, and stuff

Wow, a garter and what is the other one?

When my daughter and her fiance were living here, he put up a chin up bar in my laundry room. One day when he was doing chin ups he looked up above the dryer and saw a big black snake skin. We did eventually catch the blacksnake. (shudder)

Re: Cats, dogs, fish, and stuff

Both garter snakes, the guy poking his head out was very young.
For all I know they had/have a whole colony in that wall. They're
good to have around, just couldn't picture a 5 foot python in the
house but I guess I'm a wuss!!

Re: Cats, dogs, fish, and stuff

One set of grandparents retired to a big ol' farmhouse down in central Virginia; very rural, very isolated, no neighbors for (literally) miles around.
So one day gramps isn't home and grandma finds a snake right off the front porch. So she goes and gets the garden hoe and kills the thing with a quick two-hander.
Not sure what kind of snake - there were both benign and poisonous ones around there. I don't think she would have bothered if it were simply a garter, but she probably wouldn't have been so brave if she knew it was poisonous and would have instead waited for grandpa to get home. He had several guns and could have taken care of it without having to get within garden tool range.

She was like 70 at the time.

I'd never hoe a snake! Have a neighbor I'd like to take a
garden tool to sometimes but I'd never hack up a reptile!

It's hit mid-80's in SoCal already, so I went and got my old cat shaved like a lion. He digs the relief from the heat, and now he's never been more fun to pet, via the fuzzy factor. You can't see his paws, but he's rockin shaggy boots like a disco queen, too.

Re: Cats, dogs, fish, and stuff

My dog winding down. We've twice in the last weeks been able to adjust his meds enough to get him to rally, but the last two days have been awful.

Irony of ironies: He's been a bad dog through most of his tenure with us, but during his decline these last six months, we've grown closer than ever. Now we've got to make the decision of decisions. If we don't bring him in this morning, the vet's office is closed 'til Tuesday. So if he gets worse — or really, if he doesn't get any better — we have to make that last walk into the office of an emergency vet.

If it's time, it shouldn't matter what vet we do that with, but we like ours, and it matters a little, particularly to my wife. On the other hand, you don't want this decision ruled by the clock.

Needless to say, juggling all these concerns, both great and petty, is like rolling on glass. It's like being a kid on that I-really-don't-want-to-go-to-school-today day. You're gonna fail the test, no matter what. It's just how much grace you can bring to your failure.

Re: Cats, dogs, fish, and stuff

I'm a complete cold foot, I guess. We're trying to ride this out through the weekend, with the emergency guys on speed dial.

About six months ago, a seizure disorder kicked in. We've been keeping the seizures at bay as best as we can with meds, but the after-effect has been an hour or two of confusion and stone blindness. The last week or two, that after-effect has been close to his constant state. His mind is going and he just restlessly wanders and wanders, and if he gets caught in a corner he can't get out of, he just stands there confused. He's not in obvious physical pain, but watching the existential pain of him wandering like that, barely able to figure out the eating thing when we place him in front of his dish, it stinks.

Feeling like a coward now. Up until recently, we could count on his anti-seizure meds to keep him drowsy, but now we can't abate this stupid wanderlust.

Do not feel like a coward. This decision is extremely hard. When Duke was in his last days, I finally decided to put him out of his misery, and he passed away about an hour before I was to take him to the vet.
