If you had eggs in the fridge that say USE by Feb 6, would you
eat 'em on Feb 8th or toss them?

Re: Ask The Forum 2015

I just ate two eggs yesterday that said January something and OJ that said January 12.

My rule of thumb is, if it doesn't stink eat it.

But you might have a different thumb

Eggs last quite a bit longer than their sell-by date, at least a few weeks, I've found. Here's how you check if an egg is still good: Put it in a glass of water. If it sinks, it's good, and if it floats, it's bad.

You'll never get better until you really commit. Take away the net. Juggle the eggs! then the glassware!

Safety shouldn't be an issue at all. Also, quality shouldn't be too noticeable, no matter how you cook them, unless you're, say, poaching.

I would eat them, but in Mexico, maybe not. An expat friend pointed out to me that down here, because of no hormones and steroids and preservatives, shelf life is a lot shorter.

Re: Ask The Forum 2015

i always base my expiration-date allowances on hte duration of hte expiration period.

milk has an expiration peiod of 1-2 weeks, at best. when it hits it, it's toast, if it even lasts that long. if i go a day past the expiration date, i'm going to question it.

eggs have a shelf life of about two, maybe three months. a day or two or even a week or more is going to be fine, especially if they've been kept refrigerated the whole time.

cereal has a shelf life of, like, a year and a half. if it lasts that long (you should really switch to a cereal you actually like to eat) but if it lasts that long, it can go longer.

and i've found that my locally grown organic eggs have a really good shelf life. longer than the grocery store eggs. possibly due to freshness, or maybe from the thicker shells. in mexico, i might be more worried about the quality and consistency of refrigeration of the eggs shortening the shelf life, moreso than the 'additives' and what not.

Re: Ask The Forum 2015

You have to watch your cereal for little bugs, but other than that yes, I would say it'll last until it's just too stale to eat.

Usually, orange juice will have a certain tang if it's bad, but then I don't drink it, of course. Milk gets pitched around here all the time. I just don't drink as much as I should and it gets filmy.

Re: Ask The Forum 2015

At first I thought it was religious because of the cross. My
grandfather was the caretaker of a Catholic church for many
years on The Lower East Side. But now googling around some
more I guess it's something German (military?) related. Can't
find the same logo anywhere but there are a lot of things out
there German with similar bird and cross characteristics.

Re: Ask The Forum 2015

Going from standard heraldry, it seems we've got (two?) stints of military service (axes), defense/protection ("displayed" eagle, shield), and having conquered (that particular cross-- flory?). I think the wreath is also a "we won" thing. So... bully for this family?

Instances of similar bird-like images appear on Russian and

If your mom was born in 1928 then grandpa was probably turn of the century (give or take a few either way) and immigrated (to NYC?) sometime in the interim.
That's not all that ancient history and should be traceable via records if you find the right places to ask. There should be records at least as to when he showed up and from where.
Finding out about his life on the other side of the Atlantic is probably going to be tougher - at least without going there. I've got a relative who's diving head-first in an Ancestry.com account and is coming up with info from her grandparents in late-1800s Ireland. Ancestry costs you to join but some folks get a lot of stuff out of it, it depends on how interested you are in researching.

Let's say you buy a pair of pants take Em home then realize the sales guy never removed the anti theft plastic tag thingy. because you don't want to rip the things or get ink on them or whatever you have to return them to the store, only at a different location this time. When you present them to the guy what's your expectation of a inconvenience discount? And if the guy doesn't even offer one do you ask?

For me I totally felt entitled to something and asked but the offer seemed only to be in effect for this trip and was only 10%. I walked out and will take it up with corporate. What would the forum do?

Re: Ask The Forum 2015

I wish I did. Instead I called customer service where I was told -- by a service rep and later by her supervisor, that corporate has no policy on dealing with customers who were failed by employees who screw up checkouts as well as those who haven't been trained in how to make amends.

They are intent on first investigating with the store and then letting the store deal with me directly -- which I felt was just another way of putting me into an awkward position and supporting a corporate culture that's obviously bent on providing as little service as possible to the customer while being sure that misdeeds are paid for by punishing those who can least afford it -- the sales floor help on the hourly wage.

Worse than that, they appear to want their pound of flesh from the store where the initial error didn't even occur! If that's the case the store's reluctance to be generous is understandable -- it lets their rival off the hook for screwing up and it costs them money! Its an underrated drawback of chain retail that the suits pit neighboring store managers against one another cannibalistically.

I'm embarrassed to reveal this but the store was J Crew, and the pants were full friggin retail, which I would never do except for the fact that I need 'em for a special work event this week. I also want to be clear I'm not one of these douchebags with my palms up in fake outrage. If the policy was 10% off your next purchase I'd gladly take it, but at least give it to me on a gift card. Don't make me feel as though I've got to spend it now.

I can't believe that had I called corporate beforehand and asked their advice on dealing with my situation the problem wouldn't resolve itself very differently.

Re: Ask The Forum 2015

I'm sure part of the problem is that it's a perfectly viable scam: Buy a pair of $75 chinos, and then go into another store with your receipt, pick up a pair of same chinos, claim they're the original pair, but you were badly served and can you please remove the security device? Repeat at a third and a fourth store if you dare.

The amount of energy corporate retail chains put into keeping their wage slaves from robbing them and helping their friends do the same is staggering.

This exact scenario happened to me on my honeymoon. We were 100 miles away in a different town when we noticed the security device. Walked into a completely different retailer and explained our predicament, and it turned out they had the same security devices with the same removal system and gave us the benefit of the doubt — a benefit of the doubt, I'm ashamed to say, that was likely easier to gain as an old white guy in Taos than I may not have gotten if I was younger black male in Brooklyn.

If I bought pants at Marshall's that's just what I'd expect.

I'm into it with Amazon on customer service too, don't get me started. They employ the USPS to facilitate Sunday delivery for Prime members -- what a deal, until the dopey off-day Mailman drops an order in the wrong mailbox and it takes them 3 days to unravel the mystery. Act unawares when you trip the alarm on the way out. Have your receipt with you just in case. Taking a plane? Wear them with the tag through the security metal detector. Get it on film. I know you guys are dying for an update on my pants tragedy: well it only gets sadder. A few days after my phone call with customer service I got a nice email from the local district manager. He asked that I call him but it seemed too intimate so I wrote a note back explaining and ... bupkus. Maybe he's on vacation who knows.

Yesterday I stopped at the dry cleaner to pick up some stuff including a jacket I bought at the same store on the same day. Like the pants I needed it for my biz trip last week and one this coming week. Sure enough I'd left a pen in the inside pocket and its now ruined with blue ink blots. I love our dry cleaners and they admitted it was their fault so we worked out a credit/cash deal for the cost if a new jacket. This upset me because I knew I'd have to go back to the store which I did this morning in the rain only to discover they were out in my size necessitating another trip to the place it all started in Manhattan. It's a good thing you haven't named any names; I have it on good authority that this sort of behavior gets proprietors excommunicated from the Ancient Order of One-Hour Martinizers.

The takeaway here is that J. Crew sucks preppie-c*ck BEYOND the fact that their product is overpriced for the quality (ditto Gap and all associated stores).

Re: Ask The Forum 2015

Mr. Grimm, have you never worn a Fantastic Four accessory? A Mets hat?

Accessorizing is one of the socially acceptable ways of announcing ourselves... what we value, what we want to associate ourselves with. I would never wear designer clothes, because i have no interest in announcing any interest in clothing, per se. I got a shirt with a polo player on it for Christmas one year, from my in-laws, and I exchanged it (actually i had my wife exchange it) for 2 similar shirts without a polo player on it. And it makes me happy every time i wear one of those generic shirts. But i wear all kinds of hats and t-shirts, and some sweat shirts too .... Mets, Knicks, Jets, as well as comic book characters, and movies/tv/theater-related ones, as well. I also have some fun ties: X-Men, Silver Surfer, WB, etc which i wear whenever circumstances permit.

So its not about what the logo says about the shirt or the hat, it's what it says about you. My sneakers don't have a swoosh, and my shirts don't have a polo player, but my watch has a batman logo on its face and i wear it every day and hope somebody asks me the time. I'm nerd and i'm heard. get used to it.

I completely understand wearing t-shirts and caps and watches and bling that shows your interests. But seeing grown men putting on jerseys that say WRIGHT or STRAWBERRY on the back seems strange to me. It's like going to a ballgame in costume and that's never had any appeal to me. Sure, I'd wear a Mets cap or t-shirt or sweatshirt in public, but I'd feel foolish wearing a jersey. (I realize I'm out of step here.) I've rarely bought jerseys in the past, but when I have, they have had my last name and my high school number on them (I'm thinking about a road grey for my 40th b-day in a couple months...hmmm...). One of the first I was given as a gift when I was 10 years old came personalized with MY name and I thought it was so cool.

I have a WRIGHT jersey that was also gifted to me about 10 years ago. I think I've worn it once.

I've heard of animals called "fruit bats". Not sure if they're nocturnal or not.
Better have it removed professionally, because they return to the same spot. Cost me almost $200 last year when one made a home between my storm window and screen. Regular exterminators will call in a licensed specialist. They have to remove the bat alive and then keep it for observation to make sure it isn't rabid. They take it far away, and if healthy, release it into the wild (far from your location).

Just don't let a Mets hitter do it because by the time they manage to hit your bat with their bat your bat will have had time to produce many little bats.

Does it have a white-ish nose? Certain bat populations are dying from a fungus that's marked by their snouts turning all white.
Chances are if it were healthy then it wouldn't be hanging around by itself, or in the daytime, or so exposed like it is.

it's just trying to scare you. I mean, there are other S-related health apps that I assume you also don't use, but it's a "built-in" app so it comes with that warning like it would if you tried to disable phone. Which I once did and you can then just reenable it. You get the same warning when you disable the NFL app that's built in.

was an S5 promo thing I think. Some of it's nice, they do bundle you stuff if you look for it, like I got a year of Runkeeper Pro with the phone. But all the bloatware is a pain, especially since it uses up so much of the phone's memory. nuke the S Health, it's just Samsung bloatware. Don't nuke things that say like ANT Radio Service. or Bluetooth.

I would invite him to come visit in July or August and then secretly close the A/C vents to the guest bedroom before retiring. Then I would wait to see if he would say anything about it at breakfast the next morning. Either that or simply remove the valve stems from a few of his tires.

I'm generally a pretty laid back and easy going person. If a person wants to act like an inconsiderate jerk I prefer to simply avoid them when possible. Unfortunately, avoidance isn't always possible and occasionally someone pushes too far at which time I tend to lose my patient and forgiving nature. Should their inconsiderate behavior continue, I'm willing to either call them on it or return the favor and treat them the way they wish to treat others. I find most individuals, like bullies, really don't like it when the tables are turned on them.

Dishwasher, top rack. Air dry.

I just washed two caps; spray the hell out of the caps with OxyClean and soak them in a bin of warm water for a few hours. Wash off the soap under cold water and leave them over something round to air-dry. They're not perfect, but they're MUCH better than they were.

Sorry you had different results, hopefully it's savable. I had a tiny
bit of lint on the caps that I just removed with a lint brush rather easily.

like, don't go saying things like "cake" near the end of dinner unless there's dessert available, and specifically cake.

minimm does htis all the time when he asks for a snack on the way home from school, and generally calls out the exact snack i do NOT want the µmms to have. like cereal bars with the fruity filling that turn into a sticky crumby mess and can only be eaten in a high chair, and certainly not on a couch while watching sesame street. and... now they won't accept the cheese sticks i was gonna give them. but he's five, so it's a little excusable, though he does know better at this point.

It's funny how homeownership has gotten me over some of this. Or maybe it's being broke and needing to fiddle with things myself.

Gas oven? Do you smell gas when you try to turn it on? I'd guess probably, since the other things clearly light. Probably means it's the igniter/sparker whatever that ignites the gas for the oven itself.

And this is where it's wise to be scared, cause I'd be tempted to stick a flame down there and that's an unwise thing to fiddle with.

speaking of which, I need to fix the pipes under the sink. When I put in the new dishwasher and reconnected the pipes I had to put in an L curve and my water pressure occasionally creates a little leak when it runs. I've got it sitting in a takeout container with the intention to go buy a straight piece to make the connection and it's been like that for maybe 6 months now. It barely leaks enough to even have standing water in the dish unless I run like 4+ loads in a day, but still.

Yeah, in the lead-up to this we'd been dealing with the occasional "explosion" as the oven heats, that's scary. I'm sure it's something small like a blockage or a malfunction with a small part but I don;t want any part of it.

The oven which was fairly "new" at the time we re-did the kitchen a few years ago was the only appliance we didn;t replace. I'd like to get a Samsung to match the fridge, microwave and dishwasher but Wifey won;t go for it now that we've had small but persistent issues with the fridge and dishwasher. Samsung appliances work great when they work but we've had the fridge repaired 3 times for the same issue (water line to icemaker freezes and water pools at the floor); and the diswasher has a sensitive water fill indicator triggering the dreaded "9E" error every couple of months. I've learned how to fix that myself but it still means pulling the damn thing out of the wall and getting on hands and knees for an hour.

As with all appliance issues, repairmen are quick to blame "whoever installed it." In our case, the fridge line freezing happened because, according to Samsung it was installed with insufficient space behind the unit. Well, duh, Samsung. If we didn't have a tiny galley kitchen to begin with we wouldn't even have bought a "counter-depth" fridge. Why even sell one when it requires a deeper space than it's designed for? Big design flaw.

Re: Ask The Forum 2015

Here's the answer. I've known the asker for many years, and attended the "Craig Brazell Game" with him.

The trick to his question was that the Mets actually had a farm team in 1961 in Raleigh. This was before the entry draft began and the Mets expansion franchise was awarded in the fall of 1960 although they would only start in 1962 -unlike the AL expansion teams which started in 1961.

In any event, the Mets went about signing some lesser prospects and journeymen free agents to stock the 1961 Raleigh team which was in the Carolina League - Class B under the classifications of the time. A few of the pitchers eventually made it up to AAA and AA by the mid-1960s but none ever made it to the Mets.

For the manager of the Raleigh team, the Mets hired a native of North Carolina, Enos Slaughter who was an all-star corner outfielder for the Cardinals best remembered for scoring the winning run in Game 7 of the 1946 WS when Pesky held the ball too long. Slaughter was also accused of taunting and spiking Jackie Robinson when the latter broke the color barrier but later denied he had any animosity beyond what he had for any opponent. In any event, he played for the Yanks several seasons before ending his MLB career in 1959, so George Weiss and Casey Stengel knew him well. He managed a minor league team in Houston for the Cubs in 1960 before going to Raleigh at age 45 and he still hit .341 as a lefty pinch-hitter in over 40 games while managing Raleigh. The team was awful - finishing last in the six-team league both halves of the season for an overall record of 58-80. It only drew 26k fans in about 70 home games. Not an auspicious start to the Mets organization.

The question stumped the crap out of me, and I had to practically beg the guy for the answer. He loves him some trivia.

Unreal. I'm "working at home" today because a Sears guy was supposed to come fix the oven between 8 and noon. Because when Wifey "worked from home" on Tuesday and they had an appointmnent they didn't show up at all.

Their handy notification system provides updates on their visit times, which over the course of the day today kept getting later and later. 1:15, 2:30, 2:45 etc. When I finally called concerned that they wouldn't make it before I had to be out of the house the expected arrival was 4:45 -- too late.

Customer service offers at this point to provide a $50 gift card and a reschedule -- earliest date Dec. 17 -- which doesn't even cover half of the minimum visit charge so I told to guy to go fuck himself, although not quite as politely as that.

Will one of you come over and fix our oven for us?

Of course, then you have to go shopping at Sears...

When was the last time you bought something that was neither an appliance nor a tool from sears?

Last three things over last four years were tires, metric wrenches, and a
a washing machine (not a Kenmore).

I can't believe they've stayed open really, they got cat lives.

Re: Ask The Forum 2015

They just finished renovations on their store in the Danbury mall. Total re-do. It may have been a last gasp effort to stay open, maybe under another name (can't think of another). Too bad if the company fails, but who authorized that expenditure if the company was failing? Was this done at any other of their stores?

Re: Ask The Forum 2015

Generally retailers invest to renovate stores on a cycle, with predictable results (sales + X) or consequences (sales - X2) for failing to do so.

What Sears and Kmart isn't doing is investing to build any new stores. They are run now by a hedge fund guy who is treating the company more like a collection of real estate assets to sell off when the time is right. Its generally understood he doesn't know dick about how to operate stores and doesn't care.

Re: Ask The Forum 2015

Sears recently sent a note saying it was about to close our account because it had been years since we used the card. I did get some shoes there last month, and a light bulb for the garage door opener for my mother in law.

My wife likes the Lands End section in the Sears near us. Not sure that is in all of the stores.

Re: Ask The Forum 2015

One benefit of having a Sears nearby is that if you order Land's End items and don't like them you have the option of returning them to the store instead of packaging them up, mailing them back, etc.
