Forecasts for Fifteen: Dilson Herrera

Hey, you want a fully formed big leaguer at 20? Who doesn't?! Some guys are ready to launch at that age and I'm one of them. But should I launch? Hey, Ruben Tejada was ready for the bigs at 20, but has had trouble getting better. You don't want to hit your ceiling, man. I haven't even figured out if I prefer to throw sidearmed or overhand.

But I do know I like to hit. I'm short, strong, and like to hit.

I don't know how soon I'll be back, but be back I will. 'Til then, I'm all about the crime fighting.

What kind of 2015 do you see for me? More offense or defense? More minors or majors? More baseball or crime fighting?

Re: Forecasts for Fifteen: Dilson Herrera

To paraphrase the old song,
"How you gonna' keep them
Down on the farm
After they've seen Citeee?"

Well, they will, until the logjam clears in the middle infield. But by the end of the year, his ability and athleticism will force the issue for the front office, and Dilson will begin a stellar major league career. The time at Las Vegas will hone his skills and when he is called up, he will be a .290/ .345/ .415 performer this year.

Stays in AAA until late August. Logs some innings at shortstop in Vegas, but it doesn't amount to anything long-term. Will get the full-time gig at 2B next year, but we won't see a whole lot of him in Queens in 2015.

Or from Mount Olympus.
I'm not sure which.
(Yes, I think he'll be THAT good)

Re: Forecasts for Fifteen: Dilson Herrera

It's going to be pound-down-the-door race at Vegas between him, Syndy and Meet the Matz. If he still looks like Dilson Hererra after 150 PAs out there, and Muffy is still Muffy up here, things start to happen.

Makes a rookie of the year run behind a 298/340/415 showing with 12 HRs and 26 2Bs in 400 PAs. "Mookie Dilson" nickname takes off but I get no credit for it.

Re: Forecasts for Fifteen: Dilson Herrera

I really don't know. I'm very intrigued by this guy, and by the infield decisions the Mets will have to make in the next couple of years. Some of these players will inevitably fall short of expectations, making some decisions easier, but I'm pretty sure some tough choices may have to be made.

My guess: Duda leaves via free agency, and the Mets infield becomes Flores, Herrera, Reynolds, and Wright.

As for Herrera in 2015, it depends on Daniel Murphy. If he's healthy and productive and the Mets are contending, Herrera bides his time in Las Vegas and Murphy spends the full season with the Mets. If Murphy is healthy and productive and the Mets are not contending, then Murphy gets dealt and Herrera takes his job. And if Murphy has a lengthy injury or is having a bad year, Herrera displaces him.

Re: Forecasts for Fifteen: Dilson Herrera

Got good but not great walk rates in the minors, along with modestly good stolen base totals, but he sure profiles as the leadoff hitter the Mets don't have.

As such, his launch date may depend on how Lagares does as much as on how Murphy does.

Re: Forecasts for Fifteen: Dilson Herrera

Would be interesting to see if Muffy could/would take to a reserve role with the Mets. You know, maybe not as versatile as Campbell positionally, but versatile enough (1B-2B-3B-life-threatening-emergency OF), a better overall hitter, and useful for this club inasmuch as we don't really have a lefty PH on the magnitude of Mayberry from the right side (well, maybe we do in Nieuenhuis, but no rule against 2 good hitting reserves).

Ed Kranepool did it.

Re: Forecasts for Fifteen: Dilson Herrera

I assume he'd be at least a little stinky about downgrading his role in his walk year, but if the Mets find themselves in the midst of a pennant chase, everybody will realize that they've got to do what they've got to do.

And with a right-handed rookie second-baseman and Terry looking to get sufficient rest for Wright at third, I'm sure even a reserve Murphy will get plenty of starts — as much his productivity will insist upon and perhaps more.

Re: Forecasts for Fifteen: Dilson Herrera

Seems like Dilson is really, really on the threshold professionally.

If Murphy goes down, Dilson definitely gets a call up.
If Wright goes down, Murphy slides over to third, and Dilson probably gets a call up.
If Duda goes down, Murphy slides over to first, and Dilson possibly gets a call up.
If Campbell goes down, good possibility that Dilson gets a call up.

Keep hitting, man.

If Flores goes down, it's probably Reynolds they call on. If Tejada breaks a bunion, it's perhaps a moment for Tovar, but... Dilson is gonna see some time.

After tearing up Vegas for half the year, his slappin'-and-scrappin's gonna set your soul, gonna set your soul, on fire.

Murph won't be a sub. It's obvious they're not going to re-sign him, so it only makes sense he gets traded at the deadline. Dilson comes up and performs reasonably well, especially considering his age. 5/21/.260 (and a vastly improved infield defense).

Nice! We'll have your back.
I'll go with the replacing Murphy after he's traded late July.

Well, it doesn't make a lot of sense if he's playing well and they're going great guns toward post-season glory.

Mr. Old-Enough-to-Party is hitting .071 this spring. Sorry, Dilsonians. This man is unlikely to go north.
