Oscar, Oscar, Oscar

I was watching The Odd Couple Season 1 Episode 7 ("Oscar's Ulcer") and got this sweet screen grab of Oscar flying the flag.

Later in the episode, Oscar heads out to a Mexican restaurant where he's watching a ballgame. Felix said he knew he'd be there because the Mets are out of town. The first play we see is a runner scoring. It kind of looks like a steal of home but the pitcher doesn't look like he's coming out of his windup. It in fact looks like a broader angle version of the famous Jackie Robinson steal in Game One of the 1955 World Series. It'd be impressive if they dug up that play of all plays to use as file footage, but that's doubtful.

You can see the play here, starting about the 20:10 mark, as Oscar multi-tasks, watching the game, stuffing his face, arguing with Felix, and making time with a Mexican waitress.

Blink and you'll miss.

Re: Oscar, Oscar, Oscar

Pretty sure there is no color footage of Jackie stealing home in 55. That certainly could be the Polo Grounds though.

This is weird because the pitcher looks like the films running backwards.

I dunno, does it feel like the Catcher has the ball there? That violates the new rule.

Look at the third base coach. he appears to be waving him around in the first shot. This isn't a steal, it's a straight run scored. The pitcher was initially off the mound to back up third perhaps but he's backup quickly so that he won't block the throw, presumably from LF. The Catcher is all ready to receive a throw.

The umpire too, isn't behind the plate for ball/strikes, he's in position to see a tag play.

why are there two on deck circles. are those on deck circles? They're awfully close and only on the first base side. It seems like the crowd is up but not necessarily cheering, so away team scoring? away team dugout standing and watching there behind third?

It kinda looks like a steal, only because the catcher and the runner seem to come together a lot like Berra and Robinson. But it probably is just an otherwise typical play at the plate. The pitcher seems to be watching a throw come in from the left.

So, is that YSI?

Definitely not a steal of home, Jackie's or anyone else's.

Neither one of those are on-deck circles. They were, in effect, on-deck mounds.
They're not raised obviously, but hurlers would use those back in the day to throw to a plate that was near the backstop as a pre-game warmup. I guess they were considered preferable to the bullpen for whatever reason.
There's one on the 3rd base side also. Not quite sure why there are two on the 1st base side (in addition to the batter's circles).

yeah, some pictures I found (but all of YSI) had two on the third base side. my guess is that this clip is from after they stopped using them, so one got covered with grass at one point.

I don't know...you can see the dirt kicking up almost inside the third base line. If it was a throw from the outfield, wouldn't the runner be wide of the baseline, coming around third? Unless it's a tag-up play, which would make sense. But why isn't the pitcher backing up the play? And why is there a batter seemingly lurking right around the batters box? Is he the on-deck guy?

Most likely yes. He appears to be giving the (much more subtle than today) hands-down signal for the runner to slide.

Re: Oscar, Oscar, Oscar

Yeah, I guess it's the runner coming straight that had me thinking steal-of-home. It could also be the runner scoring a grounder to deep short or something. That would explain the pitcher not backing up. Or maybe the pitcher just stinks.

Watching old OC episodes is like an orgy of incidental art. I want to start a blog where I try to identify all Oscar's b/w photos — the prizefighter, the racehorse, the (apparent) Mets team photo. Which year is that from? Which year are his banners from?

Did you see where I posted a screenshot of a magnetic Mets schedule from a Seinfeld episode on Twitter?

Wes Westrum's head shot is very prominent. Perhaps Oscar is more plagued by self-doubt than he lets on to Crazy Rhoda Zimmerman.

Re: Oscar, Oscar, Oscar

So is this thread timed to get everyone's interest all ginned up for the [u:yfgphqpr]Odd Couple[/u:yfgphqpr] re-boot that's premiering this week (Thursday I believe) with Matthew Perry as Oscar?

Somehow I suspect this is going to wind up in the 'Must Miss TV' category.

I never heard this before. I do have a pic of Warren Spahn warming up on one, or more than likely posing on one (at Shea).

It was my belief that 2 of the circles were used for a pre-game workout. Coaches hitting fungos to left and right field would stand in the circles up the baselines. And sometimes one would be used to hit fungos to outfielders, and the other one hitting groundballs to infielders (the one circle that is closest to home might only be for infield fungos-other two outfield).

I don't know this for a fact but I figure coaches wore the grass out in the spots they would fungo from over the years, and eventually they decided to just create a small area w/no grass for him to hit from.

A 'fungo circle' makes sense for the seemingly extra one.
