Forecasts for Fifteen: Anthony Recker

You know what makes me so damn handsome? It's that I don't even know how handsome I am. I'm Anthony Recker, and I backup catch. Here's me in action.

Some guys have to go down on their knees to stop a ball in the dirt. But guys like me, the ball just stops on it's own. It stops and says, "My God... you are easy on the eyes!" That's what I bring to the table. That and the strength of three normal men. Is it enough? You tell me.

I'm Anthony Recker.

He can't wait until tomorrow 'cause he gets better looking every day.

His good looks are no defense against an onrushing Kevin Plawecki. 2/15/.200 until July, at which time he takes his act on the road to Vegas.

Re: Forecasts for Fifteen: Anthony Recker

I wonder whether his looks help with pitch framing (because he makes anything look good) or hurt with it (because by contrast, even Lord Charles looks like a hobo smoking outside the castle gate in the winter).

Gimme...

27 G, 96 PAs, .209/.280/.364, 4 R, 2 HR (one walk-off or late game-winner), 7 RBI, 5 XBH

I don't hate the player; I hate the game.

He makes the cover of GQ, and gets so many offers to model, he leaves baseball to pursue a career as a model and actor.
But if he stays in baseball, .235 - 5- 14 in a limited backup role until Plawecki is called up.

Whichever path he follows, he sets an all-time major league record by receiving 4,371 offers for dates from ex- Derek Jeter girlfriends. They all say they would like to have a date with someone who actually has a dick.

Don't think he has much of Metly future, and the fans
who have a man crush on him will be disappointed.

He surprised me to have lasted for as long as he has so far. It's against my rules of backing up to stick around for this long. So I'm expecting he plays his way off the club if he makes it at all. Then it's Johnny Time.

Re: Forecasts for Fifteen: Anthony Recker

Yeah. Sometimes benchies defy that. They become folk heroes and perhaps that helps them to outlast their sell-by date.

Pratt. McEwing. Franco. White benchies, mostly.

It's not that a bench player (of any shade) having a lousy season should be interpreted as him being done (look at Justin Turner), it's just that their skill sets are interchangeable enough that you shouldn't really have suffer through a lousy season hoping that he'll pay you back with a good one on the other side. There's another guy at AAA waiting for his chance.

Unless you're waiting and hoping for the guy to break through as a starter (not Recker), it's tough for one to move on, but one hasta.

Re: Forecasts for Fifteen: Anthony Recker

Maybe because of his slugging (16 of 36 hits last year went for XB) and because many of his hits seemed to come in "Big Spots", I hadn't realized that AR's NYM stats were quite this low:
.207 BA, .261 OBA in 309 PAs over two seasons
His model, of course, would be Ron Hodges: 12 NYM seasons while only twice (years 10 & 11) getting as many as 200 ABs, but Recker's never going to reach that status.
Instead he'll be dumped as soon as some lefty-swinging backstop with a higher OBA shows up or when Plawecki is deemed ready.

Except Hodges was a lefty with a better ObP.

I think a better analog might be Barry Lyons.

I didn't say he would accept those offers. Lots of happily married good looking guys have women throwing themselves at them.
But, there is no such thing as a bad opportunity to say something bad about Derek Jeter.

Holy hell, right? He must have been really good at laughing at Kid's jokes or something.

During the '86-'87 offseason/victory tour, I collected a shit-ton of Metly autographs/photos at stuff like mobbed mall-things, flea-market appearances, and big-box-store Toys R' Us drop-ins (thanks for showing up eventually, Doc!). Naturally, I prized these like they were pieces of the True Cross. If my cousins came near my signed Ronnie card or Mazz batting glove, I got testy; a few times, I actually growled at them. My Barry Lyons baseball? I actually ended up using it the next spring for catch and BP.

Anyway, I'd never do that to Recks-and-Effect. But, y'know, I don't think I'll get the chance to do it, as I don't think he'll be on the next playoff-bound squadron.
