Quickie Quiz 2 - (a spin on the other quiz circulating)

Who was the only Montreal Expo to have played in a game at Ebbets Field? Same question, San Diego Padres.

Identify both players in the same post to take credit for solving this quiz.

Johnny Podres was a Padre and a Bklyn Dodger.

The Expo had to have been a visiting player, a teammate of Ralph Kiner's, for that matter: Elroy (or Roy) Face.

Was Bob Aspromonte ever an Expo?

Thinking we must be running low on active MLBers who played at...

The Big O
The Murph
The Vet
Riverfront
Three Rivers
Milwaukee County
Astrodome
Candlestick

...if we haven't already run out of them in the older cases. Fulton County and Mile High must be off the board by now. Even old Busch survivors must be growing sparse.

David Wright (or Jose Reyes) may wind up being the final player to have played a National League game on artificial turf.

Solved. Former Padre Bob L. Miller debuted in 1957 in the NL, but appeared in only five games, none in Brooklyn.

The only current Mets to have played at Shea Stadium are Wright, Murphy, Niese and Parnell with the Mets....

and Colon as a visitor.

NEW YORK (AP) -- With Mike Piazza and Mo Vaughn finally clicking at the same time, the New York Mets are fighting their way back into contention.

Mike Piazza, right, hit his 326th career home run as a catcher, just one behind Johnny Bench.

Piazza and Vaughn each hit two-run homers, and Jeff D'Amico won for the first time in nearly two months as New York beat the Montreal Expos 4-3 on Tuesday night.

It took 79 games for the Mets' biggest sluggers to homer in the same contest. But they've both connected four times in the past 22 games as the Mets have moved into the thick of the wild card race.

"This is what we've been waiting for,'' Vaughn said. "It's late but it's not too late. We have a chance to get ourselves into the playoffs.''

The Expos lost their fifth straight game, but more importantly watched All-Star right fielder Vladimir Guerrero leave with a bruised left knee after crashing into the wall to rob Jeromy Burnitz of an extra-base hit.

"He just banged his knee up,'' manager Frank Robinson said. "He should be all right tomorrow.''

Guerrero's catch was one of the only highlights for the slumping Expos, who less than two weeks ago seemed poised to make a surprising run at the playoffs.

But after acquiring slugger Cliff Floyd on July 11, the Expos are just 3-10. Floyd has offered little help, batting only .200 with two RBI for Montreal.

The Expos wasted scoring chances in the opening two innings before finally breaking through with three runs in the final two frames.

"We just need someone to get a big hit earlier,'' Robinson said. "We didn't give ourselves a chance to jump out on them.''

The Mets, who looked lost coming out of the All-Star break, have won eight of 10 to move four games over .500 for the first time since May 31.

"We still have a lot of time left,'' Piazza said. "We're kind of chasing now. We have crept back into the wild card race.''

They will need more strong starts like the one D'Amico (5-8) gave them to stay in the hunt. The right-hander took a shutout into the eighth inning, ending a nine-start winless streak. He had been 0-4 with an 8.06 ERA since beating Florida 3-0 on May 26.

A 52-minute rain delay before the start of the game cut into D'Amico's warmup time. He stranded five runners in the first two innings before settling down after that.

"My bullpen was a little bit rushed because of the rain delay,'' he said. "I went out there and felt my way through in the beginning and after that everything was good.''

Armando Benitez pitched the ninth for his 25th save, allowing a solo homer to Brian Schneider.

Bartolo Colon (3-1) lost for the first time with Montreal and just the second time in 12 decisions, counting his tenure with Cleveland.

Colon, who allowed four runs and five hits in six innings, was coming off two straight complete games -- including a 134-pitch effort against the Mets last Thursday.

"He didn't quite have his really sharp stuff,'' Mets manager Bobby Valentine said. "He was probably a little tired.''

Last week, the Mets wasted many scoring chances, getting 13 hits but stranding 13 runners in a 2-1 loss. New York made the most of its hits this game and could have scored more if not for Guerrero's catch.

With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Burnitz hit a drive into the right-field corner. Guerrero sprinted over and made a leaping grab as he hit the wall.

He remained in the game, but went back to the clubhouse with his bat and glove after the inning and didn't return.

Colon was sharp until running into trouble in the fourth. Piazza walked on four pitches leading off the inning, and Vaughn hit the next pitch over the right-field fence for his 16th homer.

Vaughn has 11 homers in his last 24 games as he has finally found his rhythm after missing last season with an injury.

"I'm glad it's clicked in for me,'' Vaughn said. "The first couple of months I wanted to do so well, being back home. After that, I've settled down and I'm having fun.''

After Timo Perez bounced a single over first baseman Andres Galarraga to start the sixth, Piazza hit his 22nd homer to make it 4-0.

D'Amico left after allowing Fernando Tatis' two-run single with two outs in the eighth. He allowed two runs and eight hits in 7 2-3 innings.

Game notes

Expos All-Star 2B Jose Vidro didn't play for a second straight game because of a stiff back. ... Piazza hit his 326th homer as a catcher, one behind Johnny Bench and 25 behind Carlton Fisk. ... Piazza threw out his third runner of the series, catching Jose Macias trying to steal after a pitchout in the fourth inning.

2002, just before the ship went down. The referenced previous start, Colon vs. Estes at the Big O, was that rarest of Mets losses that I found gripping enough to not mind the final result.

You've made me briefly nostalgic for a season I couldn't stand. Nice job!

I remember that period, a little before and then after the 2002 ASG, for when Mo Vaughn finally started to hit. He's mostly remembered for that tape measure blast against the Braves that went about halfway up the Shea scoreboard, but Mo absolutely crushed the bejeesus out of a lot of other pitches during those weeks. Not just HR's either. He was like Herman Munster wrecking the stadium during his tryout for Leo Durocher.

That wouldn't last.
