Phillies are pitching former Met Aaron Harang.

One of the most recent news blurbs when you google him on baseball-reference: "4/11 Section 215: PhilsWeek! - Young Stars Jeff Francoeur and Aaron Harang Lead the Way: Welcome to the première edition of PhilsWeek! for 2015...."

Ceetar will be located in section 504 row 11, outfield side. You may spot him around the tailgate scene before the game.

Heavy idiot factor at today's game already.

First, we have the idiots in the center field seats doing a roll-call in the top of the first. We can have our own traditions, thanks. Stop doing that.

Also, when Murphy hit his double, a fan threw a beer at
Sizemore. Not cool.

Nice game. Big crowd (said it was a record) but sedate because of the low scoring. On that subject, I really worry where our offense is going to come from this year.

Only player booed during introductions was Ruben Tejada. Strangely Jeff Francoeur was loudly cheered when introduced with the Phillies reserves. (Does everyone not remember how he wasn't any good for the Mets?) Some lesser cheers for Phillies coach Steve Henderson. Loudest Mets cheers for Wright, Colon and Harvey, approximately in that order.

Fan idiocy discussed above. I'm generally in favor of a loud cheering section in the outfield but please stop embarrassing Mets fans with that roll-call B.S.

In his first plate appearance, Duda showed bunt. I would like him to do that more. Best way to stop those shifts.

Finally, we seem to be finally done with "Takin' Care of Business" after a win. Couldn't make out the victory song as I was making a quick exit.

Only the idiotic roll-call. They should be ashamed. It's not "their thing;" it's something the idiot Yankee fans do and should be left at that stadium.

I only heard a Daniel Murphy 'roll call' you always here this sorta thing crop up once in a while. It's not so much a the7line thing as much as the type of fan that sorta thing attracts. It did sound like someone told them to cut it out? Or did they go on and I just didn't hear them from 504?

Fun game. Good seeing people again.

Place was packed. I'm looking forward to a good season and all, but there's something to be said for smaller lines and everyone that's there generally knowing what they want and what to order and where to go.

Beer selection got a nice bump.

Re: IGT #7 4/13/15 The Home Opener

It was indistinguishable from what they do at Casa-de-MFYs. In the top of the first, chant a player's name until they wave to the seats in the outfield. Continue with all players on the field except pitcher and catcher. It was noticeable in the middle level near the press box.

--
Random note that I forgot from before: I had a ticket that offered access to the various Mets "clubs" so I figured I would make a stop by if for nothing else than a shorter line to get some food. People ahead of me try to order the lobster roll (it's on the giant menu board) and they are told "we don't have that today." I order next, ask for one of those new signature sandwiches they advertised. Am told the same thing, "we don't have that today." I ask if perhaps they were waiting for a day when there would be a bigger crowd in the park to offer the full menu. Get a blank stare back.

Now, I know the person at the counter has little control over the situation. This one is on stadium management. You'd think they'd at least have the premium concessions working...but I guess not. Sometimes, they really make it hard to love this stadium.

Jason Fry nailed it (once again) -

One New York fan added something neither enjoyable nor admirable to Daniel Murphy‘s fourth-inning double, waiting to douse Grady Sizemore with beer through the fencing of the Mo Zone. Here’s hoping he was not only ejected but banned from Citi Field. What’s hard to understand about this? Booing the enemy is your prerogative. Trash-talking (within the bounds of decency) is perfectly acceptable and can even be good sport. Interfering with a player in the field of play? Completely unacceptable. Plus from a replay it looks like he missed. Whoever you are, dude, you even suck at being a dick.

The billboard guy taking victory laps at a sold out game which he himself attended was pretty rich, but among other things they also managed to take shots at yutzes in the 7-Line crowd who spent the game vomiting on the concourses.

It's been going on at YS for about 20 years or so. In the top of the 1st, when the home guys are out in the field, each starting player has his name chanted out until said player (not always the pitcher or catcher) turns around between pitches and acknowledges his shout-out via a quick wave. This continues in succession through each of the starting nine.
It's certainly an all right tradition and one that appears to have sprouted out organically by regular fans (even if it's by those meatheads in the RF bleachers who like sporting their beer muscles whenever possible) but it's THEIR tradition and not one that should be copied by NYM fans.

Makes it kind of tough for Met fans to complain about the Wilpon's stealing the 'Sweet Caroline' thing or other such monkey-see/monkey-do stuff if they are going to be just as un-original.

There are a lot of "sunday driver" Mets fans at Opening Day. People that only come out to that game. You see it by the way they're not quite familiar with the flow of the stadium and concourses (It was the same at Shea) or where the lines are and how there are so many more clearly old Mets shirts and jerseys. Like they bought one 20 years ago and it's just what they wear to Opening Day.

I bought a billboard with somebody else's money telling somebody else what to do with their money, holding them in moral contempt for how they spend their money, while still enriching them by purchasing their products and services by giving them my money, and write it off as part of my campaign. And I deride the sellouts for not being on board my campaign while making money.

That's some mental gymnastics.

Ohhhh, we didn't even get to talk about this.

Middle of the 8th inning yesterday: PA starts playing some Billy Joel as the scorboard reads "Piano Man Sing-Along." No shit. That is what they are trying to push this year. I mean, it's better than "Sweet Caroline" (marginally), but...

If they mix it up, I'm okay with a between innings song at that point. But Piano Man isn't better than Sweet Caroline and I doubt the Mets are the first to play it, just like the Red Sox weren't the first to use Sweet Caroline.

Might not be a thing. one game small sample right now. Maybe something they just did.

But those things are always corny. Like the Paul Blart trivia thing. Yeah, someone paid MLB to heavily promote that movie. Happens all the time. I mean, don't get me started on Budweiser and the clips from their ad mocking craft beer drinkers.

I DID enjoy the silly pictionary bit though. And that they literally gave someone a copy of a 15sec Cuddyer drawing of Bacon and Eggs is just the right level of whimsy to me.

I agree that, apart from borrowing culturally from the Red Sox, "Piano Man" is not a superior song to "Sweet Caroline."

Moreover, it's something of a downer for the seventh-inning stretch. Not that a weekday day game isn't an appropriate time to sing about businessmen getting stoned, but still. "Piano Man"? Rilly?

well, 8th inning.

but yeah, a little bit mellow. Maybe it's like the Nats trying to lull the opponent to sleep with tunes during BP?

Did Mayor De Blasio go with "deBLASIO," "d'BLASIO," or "den BLASIO" on his jersey?

To my ears, Colon was even louder than Harvey.

I think it was "de Blasio." It was a off-white home pinstripe jersey, with number 6 on the back. I have no idea why he thought a jersey was appropriate. I would respect him a lot more* if he stuck to his Red Sox fandom.

1. They play songs between innings all the time. The point of having a singalong at one point in every game is that it will always be the same song.

2. Piano Man is a superior song to Sweet Caroline, but that doesn't really matter, because the real issue is

3. The Mets (and, as evidenced on opening day, their fans) need to stop trying to copy other people's traditions. Just because several teams have eighth-inning singalongs does not mean the Mets need to as well.

it's an entertainment business and the 150 or so 'major' sporting venues will always copy from each other in ideas.

It's not like a singalong is a particularly innovative, unique, or exclusive idea.

hell, the 7th inning stretch and Take Me Out to the Ballgame were the same, without even any local team customization.

Good to hear that.
Learning how to root for our team by copying the Bleacher Creatures is like learning music by listening to Yoko Ono singing.

Douglas Kroll

Only the Mets could have a "roll call" story be the headline coming out of a great home opener.

It wasn't "the headline." Nor is the first time that happened. And "only the Mets" didn't do it.

And that's just a terrible job Photoshopping.
