Juan to Remember

All this talk about Lagares reminds me how stealth a prospect he actually was. Sure, MFS62 will take credit for seeing it coming in the Adopt-A-Prospect forum but even still the info we went on then said so little about his ability to man center field. Check out the thread and Vic's comment that we're still pondering today:

Lagares doesn't have nearly enough power to justify his K rates and BB/K ratios, nor enough OB% to complement his speed. He's also a 23 year-old Dominican turning 24 in the spring, which makes him a little old for AA, further discounting his recent production (and being from the DR, he may be 26 or 27, for all we know). plus, as a RHer, he fills the wrong end of a platoon.

Unless this guy is a GG-level CFer, i don't see his value.

His minor league record was spotty. Very good 2011, not as good 2012, started 2013 on fire in Vegas and was up to the Mets that April. He was hurt a lot. I don;t recall seeing his name on anyone's list of the Top 10 prospects though I'm willing to be wrong on that. Was he?

Thing we didn't realize was that his first start was the Buck-Pie-In-The-Face game we discussed in two threads yesterday.

I myself became Juanmerized a few days later when watching him catch flies was the only redeeming thing about a wonderful day completely ruined by the dreadful 2013 Mets.

Anyway, the question remains: Have the Mets ever had a sneakier impact guy? deGrom maybe? What's your Memory of Juan Lagares?

I remember when he got called up, a few were dubious, and you were brashly bullish. Something like "Lagares? Sure, why not? I think he's going to be the Rookie of the Year."

"Jesus, I just hope he doesn't take playing time away from Rick Ankiel."

Re: Juan to Remember

I might have said something stupid like that but I was only bullish on his glove and not at all serious. I'm still on the fence with him; but at the same time I'm thinking that if he hits like he has this spring all year and plays like he does in the field he's a fucking MVP.

Its weird, man.

I remember a tiny little part of me kicking rocks because, oh, man, den Dekker's bench role is in serious jeopardy even when he gets back.

Re: Juan to Remember

The world is full of guys who improve as hitters in the big leagues at the age Laggy is at.

I think not just of the obvious Carlos Gomez, but of Carl Everett and Vernon Wells and Jeromy Burnitz and José Guillen.

The key I think is getting enough reps while you're not that good. And what allows you to do that is (1) bouncing from team to team, (2) coming up with a team in transition that doesn't have a lot of great alternatives, and (3) being an elite defender.

I think he scored big on (2) and (3) and working his thing out the last two years on time bought for him by his glove and the failed hopes of the likes of Collin Cowgill, Rick Ankiel and Chris Young. I think he can hit. He's certain got a bigger upper body than young Carlos Gomez did.
