Wow! 18 and 11? I have to admit I haven't been paying any attention at all to the game results. I kind of sensed that the Mets had a winning record, but that's better than I expected. I know none of this matters until Monday, but it's nice to see how much winning they've been doing.

Notice that scratching out a tie in that last game kept Toronto from catching them in the Grapefruit Cup chase.

Re: Standings, 2015

Leave it to Atlanta. Blow up the team, have more-or-less unimpressive spring training, do a blockbuster trade just as the season starts in which they shed a bunch of salary, and they come out of the gate 3-0.

Mets end the first series tied for the second Wild Card slot.

Re: Standings, 2015

Offseason marquee teams like San Diego, Chicago, and LA — who didn't necessarily make a splash out of the gate — have made a move the last two series.

Early sinkers include Milwaukee, Philly (you're welcome), Pittsburgh, and the defending champion Giants.

San Francisco and Pittsburgh may not be that bad (but if McCutcheon is hurt, it could be a long Pittsburgh summer). Philly and Milwaukee may actually be that bad. But the Giants have lost six in a row in a division where a lot of teams are muscling up. Their on-again/off-again season pattern may continue.

The East division looks pretty nicely divided between two packs of haves and have-nots. As tied for first as the Mets may be, I'm allowing Atlanta to take the the technical division lead based on their head-to-head edge... for now.

Re: Standings, 2015

2006 club had many more stars than 2015 but I already like this club so much better. For one thing this team has more than twice the homegrown talent that club did and what it lacks in starpower it makes up for with a huge advantage in depth.

'06 club was so strung together, threadbare beyond the glossy outer shell (itself a problem because bums like Wagner had no capable replacements), a single injury to a relief pitcher in July basically doomed the club. This team has already absorbed the loss of a starting pitcher and a closer and you can't even tell.

On the way to 102!!!!!

Re: Standings, 2015

I agree. (Maybe not about the 102 wins, but about the rest of it.) I'd like to see the Mets play at about a .550 pace during the weeks that Wright is out. If they can do that, it will mean that they have the depth to weather his absence.

This is an amazingly home-grown team. Look at all of the prominent players who have never been in a big league game for any team other than the Mets: Wright, Duda, Murphy, d'Arnaud, Flores, Harvey, Niese, deGrom, Gee, Lagares, Familia, Tejada, Montero.

Starter, closer, the guy slated to be the main LHR (Edgin), still waiting on rehabs from the previous closer and a set-up man (Parnell & Black), and now the 3Bman.
No one hit (assuming Wright's injury is relatively short) should be critical enough to torpedo a whole club, but that's a lot to absorb considering it's been from just ST plus the first nine games.

Heavy division component to the early part of the season -- they neither leave the eastern time zone nor play a non-East (NL or AL) team until mid-May -- also makes this early part of the calendar most interesting than in most years.

Re: Standings, 2015

Parnell, Edgin, Black, Mejia. Four relievers — including the first and second closer choices — missing from this bullpen. Five if you count Gene F. Walter. And they're absorbing it. They haven't even launched Operation Leathersich* yet.

Folks decry that Sandy hasn't done anything to upgrade the pen. But he's been doing it for years. Open your eyes, jackass!

The Mets have exactly one home run each from every player in their regular starting lineup, save one.

c — d'Arnaud: 1
1b — Duda: 1
2b — Murphy: 1
3b — Wright: 1
ss — Flores: 1
lf — Cuddyer: 1
cf — Lagares: 0
rf — Granderson: 1

And just to keep things straight, they have exactly one home run from the reserves, courtesy of John Mayberry, Jr.

Mets are not the only red hot team in the league, as their two new fellow division leaders are also aflame, particularly the top-spending Los Angeles Dodgers.

San Francisco is floundering, and they've installed our old bud Angel Pagan as their number three hitter. They seem to have a solid starting eight, but they miss Hunter Pence daily and dearly.

Caught and tied Detroit & KC for best record in majors.

1-1/2 games clear of anyone in NL. Closest = Dodgers at 9-4 & SD at 10-5

4.0 games up on the Nationals which will be the biggest concern all season despite their injuries and slow start. They're now at .500 with Werth back, Span back, and Rendon starting rehab. Only their bullpen is a real concern to them right now.

As giddy as I am about this start (and I am oh so freakin' giddy), I don't see them running away like they did in 86 (or even '06) simply because the Nats are so talented.

Keep it up Mets!

I like to think that a formidable rival like the Nats will be the cauldron of fire in which the steel of the Mets is tempered.

You'd hate to get soft beating up on the Braves and Phils and then run into a buzz saw during a West Coast trip.

It is really nice, though, that all this winning has come entirely against division rivals. If there's anyone it's good to fatten up against, it's these guys.

You know, every year we (or at least, I) think, well, if everything goes right, maybe the Mets can contend.

This year, so much has gone wrong, and they keep winning. Maybe rooting for things to go right isn't the best approach after all.

Nationals game last night was frustrating.
First good out of division team Washington faces and the Cardinals get 12 hits + 4 walks + another Nats error (tho not Desmond) + 2 Wild Pitches ... and score exactly once.
It was a 9th inning run off closer Storen to force extras but the Nats won it via walk-off HR in bottom 10.

Tigers did essentially the same thing vs Yanx: out-hit them 10-8 but hit/ran into FIVE DPs [three on the ground, one liner, one K/CS] and lost 5-2 for just their 3rd loss of the season.
Didn't help that Detroit pitchers walked NINE!!

Re: Standings, 2015

I personally could have gone without that title for another couple days if it meant the Tigers weren't shitting the bed vs the Yanx two nights in a row.
For some reason David Price turns into Fischer Price whenever he sees the 'Interlocking NY' cuz the Yanqui hitters play with him like they were children. Last night: 8 runs, all earned, on 10 hits + 3 BBs + 1 HBP in 2.1 innings - and the previous time the Yanx saw Price they pinata'd him for 8 runs over 2 IP.

btw, how'd you like to be a Tiger fan who paid for tickets last night? Price coughs up 6 in the top of the 1st AND IT'S FUCKING SNOWING!!
Tigers came back with 4 in the bottom half but Price gave up 2 more in top 2 (including back-to-back triples at one point). At this point the game was essentially over (final score 13-4) but it's only the 2nd inning and the game's already more than an hour old. In fact we reached the 2nd inning in the Mets game before they did in Detroit even though that one had more than 1/2 hour head start. Did I mention that it was cold and snowing?

Re: Standings, 2015

Miami has pulled into a tie with the sinking Phils, and the tie is going to the Fish based on head-to-head play. San Diego has moved atop the Wild Card Standings, with Colorado right on their tail. This leaves the West looking like an ambiguous mishmash, with the leaders on a three-game skid and the last place Giants on a three-game run. But it allowed the Mets to knock the Braves out of the money for the time being.

Hottish Cincinnati has passed DC and moved into a tie wtih Pittsburgh. The defending champs in San Francisco are starting to find their feet, pulling ahead of Philadelphia, which all may soon achieve.

Brewrs got just their third win yesterday, and are drowing as much at the Mets are soaring.

Not a coincidence as those three-game runs by the Dodgers and Giants are the result of a head-to-head series where the home Giants completed a three-game sweep, including twice via walk-offs. Middle game was Kershaw [2 runs on 3 hits over 6] v Bumgarner [2 runs 6 hits over 6.1] although neither wound up involved in the decision.
Nothing like an early season last place over first place sweep to really tighten things up.

The rest of the NL East is all in-division this weekend. The bottom two teams won which keeps our lead while tightening up the whole group from 2nd to 5th

Braves got 2-hit in Philly by Aaron Harang w/help from Ken Giles. Phils won 1-0 in the 9th off Jim Johnson: 1B - Sac-Bunt - PB - E3

Nationals continue to not hit and lost in Miami 3-2 courtesy of Mat Latos's first decent outing of the year [6.1, 2 runs on 6 hits]. Tanner Roark took the loss in relief of Jordan Zimmermannnnn

The Mets are 7-10 since the big winning streak. I get that no one expected them to keep winning at a .700 clip, but this is now several weeks of lackluster baseball. The team has largely been what people feared they would be coming in, good pitching, not enough hitting. As FK mentioned, it seems like they get no-hit for the first 3 innings every night.

I think, or at least hope, they will stay competitive for the rest of the season. But they are not going to take that next step until they get some legitimate threats in that lineup.

they lost 2 of their better hitters. That's why they're not hitting.

But I'll take alternated 14-3 and 7-10 streaks. Hell, I'd probably take alternated 11-6 and 7-10 streaks.

Re: Standings, 2015

Yeah, I really dig this team's starting pitching, but regardless of what the standings say, this team is not a sustainable division leader as it is constructed today.

They can't hit, they can't run, they can't play defense, they're often injured and, and outside of the closer position, the bullpen has been up and down. That's just not a recipe for a playoff ball club no matter how great the starters are.

This is not true. I grant you that they lost 2 of their better hitters, but teams lose players to injury all the time. You hope that the rest of the lineup can cover. This lineup does not.

The biggest problems are the corner outfielders. They make $25 million between the two of them and their production has been awful. We already talked about how Granderson sucks. Cuddyer is even worse. Whether or not d'Arnaud and Wright are in the lineup, these two have no excuse.

Lagares, Flores, Plawecki and Herrera have potential, but haven't realized it yet. And Murphy waffles between suck (this year) and kinda sorta ok (other years).

This lineup needs help, even when Wright and d'Arnaud return.

Ceetar
May 13 2015 08:39 AM
Re: Standings, 2015

I'd be surprising if Cuddyer and Murphy don't pick it up, track record and all.

Granderson, as reported by stats in that thread, is fine.

Lagares is middling, but that's fine with his defense.

Plawecki and Herrera/Campbell are the guys that have gotten the most AB due to the injuries to two good players, and they haven't carried the weight. If they did, it'd make it easier to wait on Murphy and Cuddyer contributing and easier to carry Flores for a weekly XBH or two or Tejada for the OBP.

But that's how you get 7-10. Someone will run off a hot streak that shows up their potential, or Cuddyer or Murphy or both will get back to what a whole ton of AB suggests they will, and they'll score some more runs.

It's a delicate balance between trying to figure out what is going to fix itself during a downturn and what needs to be truly addressed.

Most of those teams are badly damaged if it's two of their top hitters.

I don't know what the answer is. But (1) there are worse things than weathering an injury trend in May while in first place, and (2) I'm starting to feel that while Murphy may well recover, he doesn't really fit on this team offensively or defensively.

There are indeed worse things than weathering injuries while in first place during May. But aren't we aiming for better?

Murphy, at absolute best, is a pretty good-- not GREAT, mind you, but pretty good-- offensive player for the position he plays. He's been nowhere near his absolute best for the better part of two months now. I'm not saying you trade him now; at his current, likely trade value, that would probably be ludicrous. But, yeah, he'd be movable for upgrades elsewhere were he being his best self; I sure as hell don't want him in the starting lineup over the more promising bat/stronger glove in Herrera.

It's been closer to 1 month than 2.

What if him in the lineup over the 'promising bat/stronger glove' Herrera costs the Mets 2 wins over the course of the season while Herrera is discovering that promise?

Those streaks likely won't alternate, though. 7-10 or maybe 10-7 is probably where the Mets'll live most of the time. Those 14-3 runs based on 11 in a row are rare for even the really good teams.

I wonder if Murphy is having trouble with the idea that it's his walk year. (Just a wild guess.) I know he's never been the most heads-up player, but he seems worse in that aspect than he has in the past. Not to mention his .230 batting average.

Or maybe he's still spooked from having seen a gay man in a baseball uniform during spring training.

Either way, he has to play better or play less. Maybe David Wright's return will force something to happen, but that's not looking particularly imminent right now.

I'd guess Murph probably thinks (knows?) that his days with the Mets are coming to an end one way or another. Either he'll be traded or he'll sign somewhere else in the winter. I haven't seen any sign that he'll be asked back in 2016...especially now that Herrera is getting a bulk of work at 2B. That has to effect his mentality even if it's only subconsciously.

The most likely explanation for Murph is the ST he missed while being injured
APRIL: .198/.258/.346
MAY: .308/.325/.333

Yeah, May is still a small sample size (40 PA) but if anything stands out for him in his career it's consistency marked by Good BA [.291 - .286 - .289 over the last three seasons],
low walks [.332 - .319 - .332 OBA], gap power [40 - 38 - 37 2Bs]. Based on all that, I'd tend to label April as the outlier.

Well, I meant to refute your notion of "now practically back to full strength." If the Nats being at full strength is bad news for the Mets, and the Nats not being at full strength is bad news for the Mets, I don't know what to say. Bad news for the Mets, I guess.

Very obviously, Werth and Fister had not been out during the duration of that 17-4 stretch.

Which is hardly anything to write home about. It certainly seems like they have been worse. But it's June 2, and they are tied for first. Syndegaard on the mound tonight against a guy with a 7+ ERA. Things could be worse.

And I hope to see Mr. Bump in September as well.

Very good and thank you. I don't think that guy ever looked young. He will be forever linked in my mind with the dawn of microwave ovens. His name was in the corner of the other ad but I couldn't make it out. This ad says: " Richard Deacon, star of his own cooking show, Deacon Does It In The Kitchen."
He had a cooking show? In the days of 13 channels?

The Blue Jays slapped the Nats around and are now leading 7-3, in Washington (said Toronto earlier).

Nats fans have to be pretty pissed at this point. The division is theirs for the taking and they're just fumbling and bumbling. Long season to go, though I think we'd all have signed up for first place on the morning of June 8th.

Unfortunately, we also know we've seen this before. Flashes of first-half competence washed away by second-half meltdowns. It's kind of a trademark.

Re: Standings, 2015

What's mainly happening here is that the East division is getting its collective butt kicked now that they're playing out of division games.
It was hard to judge the group in April as they mostly just played each other, but the division now is cumulative 18 game under .500 and almost all of that is from May & early June
NLC = +6; NLW = +6 (NL as a whole is 37-43 in interleague play)

Nats in particular have losing records against: TOR, CUBS, StL, REDS, & BOSOX (6-13 total) with only a cumulative 5-2 vs ARZ & SD to balance it off.

Re: Standings, 2015

I keep expecting this iffy play by both clubs to start getting updates like "The Braves are only a game behind now!" but they're still under .500 though that's only 3 back at this point.

The other two "baseball" teams of course are tire fires.

Wow. Thank god we are in the east. If they were in the West, they'd be in third place, if they were in the Central they'd be in fourth.

Even with yesterday's offensive explosion, the Mets are still 25th in the majors in OPS, the worst of any contender.

They're trying to avoid that situation. (Although it now looks like the six-man rotation isn't going to be the way they do that.)

Whether they manage to do so, or whether it will even matter, of course remains to be seen.

Washington battering San Francisco. If that holds, it knocks the Mets back a half game in the division, but puts the Giants within reach in the wilds of the Wild Card race.

Re: Standings, 2015

This was a Bumgarner start today. Nats kicked off the 1st inning HR - 2B - HR and it was all downhill from there.
Their only problem is that Strasburg walked off the mound in the middle of the 4th with some as yet undisclosed ailment.

This early morning (11 AM) July 4th start thing the Nats now have going is a decent emerging tradition.
With the Giants in town that means an 8 AM TV appointment for their fans out west which is kind of cool too. Game over by 11 AM and your whole day in front of you.

Giants attempted a pickoff of Harper at second by sneaking their center fielder in behind him. No dice, but ingenuity points. Love a good defensive rotation.

Re: Standings, 2015

Not underscored last night, since it's the start of a three-game series, but they passed the Giants in the Wild Card standings last night, putting nothing in between them and the Cubs, like there's nothing in between them and the Nats in the division, leaving their fate currently in their own hands.

As it stands now, their fecklessness against the Cubs has clearly been their undoing this season.

31–39 / .443 since the end of the winning streak. It would be nice to get that number down to scratch.

Milwaukee helped us by coming from behind to beat Atlanta. Cubs host the Cards later. The Nats are at home too against Cincinnati.

A new manager in San Diego but same old story. Theirs may well be the corpse people start picking at most aggressively.

Twenty-four hours later and the Mets' playoff likelihood (which should be plugged into this chart) is up to 29.9%. Maybe Quitkowski wants to re-assess.

Amazingly, we exit that chilly series as... the hottest team in the division(?!) — even after the Phillies have completed their sweep the Marlins.

Coming on strong is San Francisco, edging back ahead of the Mets and sitting one game off the pace for the second Wild Card slot, currently held by Chicago, but I've got no faith in them. Also making a minor run with a hot weekend is the previously disastrous San Diego, which may make them just a little coyer about dealing off parts.

Re: Standings, 2015

The big story, standings-wise, is San Francisco, who have rocketed past Chicago to take an unambiguous lead in the Wild Card and are right up the Dodgers' butts in the NL West.

San Diego is also playing hot ball just at the time they are seemingly looking to be dealt out, so they may wait until later in this Mets series or even the last moment to consummate any deals they may have in place.

Our last hot team in the division is quixotic Phillies, playing sweet ball seemingly as a glorious farewell to one another.

Mets are suddenly looking at playoff likelihood of 49.2%. I'll take that.

Not to worry. In July, NGB's are beyond meaningless. But to illustrate, Miami, the 4th place team in the East has an NGB of 27. That's because the Marlins are 12 games behind the Nats, 10 games behind the Mets and five games behind the Braves. 12 + 10 + 5 =27. There you go.

Not only pulled within a game of foist last night, but gained a game in the Wild Card on both the Cubs and the previously hotter-'n'-Hell Giants.

Strangely, the Phillies are a last-place juggernaut right now. Five in a row and nine of the last ten, but still sit comfortably at the bottom of the league. They sure are breaking Toronto's spirit, though. The Jays had neither Reyes nor Tulowitzki on hand and had to make their stand with Ryan Goins at short as they fell 3–2.

Re: Standings, 2015

The Mets sit in a virtual tie, technically a half a percentage point behind their vanquished rivals. The Washington Post, of all sources, has called them "baseball's most interesting team."

Chicago, nonetheless retains the title of "the NL's hottest team," having gone on a nice little tear to tie the Giants for the second Wild Card spot. Also notable is the Phils, who lost yesterday, but have been a burning flame, full of desire since the All Star Break. It shows you how deep a hole they dug for themselves, when you consider that all that burning has only gotten them within 2.5 games of no longer being the worst team in the league. Ouch.

Not only do the Mets seize sole possession of first place, but the Giants score one in the 12th, and then give up two in the bottom of the inning (error by Brandon Crawford, two-run walk off homer by Andonis Garcia), thus losing a hold on that second wild card spot to the Cubs, who have been delayed forever in their game with Pittsburgh this evening.

Nats (Yunel Escobar) HR'd on the first pitch of the game, but that's their only run and they've had just one hit since heading into the 5th.
This game (Strasburg vs Vogelsong) would be a tough game for them to lose and 4.5 games behind sounds a whole lot worse than 3.5, so this one is a biggie (as they all will be from this point forward).

That's a wash. If the Nats control their own destiny, then so do the Mets. If both teams win all of their remaining games, the Mets finish ahead of the Nats. Of course, both teams can't possibly win all of the rest of their games unless all six remaining games between the Mets and Nats are canceled permanently. And even then, the Mets would still control their destiny in the division.

Baseball Prospectus now has the Mets at 85.7 per cent to win the NL East, and 0.2 per cent for the wild card.

Mets are also now only two games behind the Dodgers, which means they have a shot at being the division winner with the second-best record which would give them home field advantage over the NL West in the Division Series. Given their home/road differential, that could be pretty important.

Interesting. The Giants are coming on strong, though. Mets split the season series with them 3-3. If the next tiebreaker is record within the division, Mets are 30-17 while Giants are 18-15 and Dodgers are 19-13.

Yes, intradivison record is the second tiebreaker.

Determining Home-Field Advantage in Two-Team Tiebreakers
1. Head-to-head winning percentage during the regular season.
2. Higher winning percentage in intradivision games.
3. Higher winning percentage in intraleague games.
4. Higher winning percentage in the last half of intraleague games.
5. Higher winning percentage in the last half plus one intraleague game, provided that such additional game was not between the two tied clubs. Continue to go back one intraleague game at a time until the tie has been broken.

The Mets have moved ahead of the Dodgers to claim 2nd place among National League division leaders.

They remain one game behind the Yankees for the best record in New York City.

The Mets record still well behind NL Wild Card contenders Pittsburgh and Chicago. While it's good for the Mets this year, the fact that teams with superior records may play in the coin-flip playoff game still pisses me off. So I'm rooting for the Mets to catch up and pass Pittsburgh and Chicago even though they don't need to do so to make the playoffs.

By the way, I can't remember any time in the past 20 years when the NL Central had the strongest division in the league.

It's an unlikely scenario, but the Mets could clinch the division as early as Sunday versus the Yankees. It would require the Mets continuing their winning streak for five more games while the Nats lose at least 5 of their 6 games. From the "Take Back the City" perspective it would be cool to clinch while playing the Yankees. On the downside there were probably be a ton of Yankees fans with tickets to the game, so that would limit the number of Mets fans who could be in attendance. So I'd be content with kicking the pants of the Yankees and the Mets clinching against the Braves in front of a stadium full of Mets fans.

So, I read somewhere this week (I don't think it was here) that the Mets were closing in on the Cubs a Pirates in the standings, which would (according to this internet musing) be good in a scenario where the Mets were to face the Cubs or Pirates in a hypothetical [crossout]NLDS[/crossout] NLCS since having a better record would give the Mets home field advantage.

But, I always thought that a division winner would get home filed advantage over a wildcard team in an LCS regardless of records. Am I wrong? Did I miss a change when the second wildcard team was added?

On the downside there were probably be a ton of Yankees fans with tickets to the game, so that would limit the number of Mets fans who could be in attendance. So I'd be content with kicking the pants of the Yankees and the Mets clinching against the Braves in front of a stadium full of Mets fans.

They could actually clinch earlier than that. The soonest the Mets can clinch is Sunday afternoon, with a Nationals loss. The division could be clinched on Sunday hours before the Mets take the field.

But as you say, that's unlikely. The Mets would have to win their next four (which can happen!) and the Nationals would have to lose their next six, which is pretty unlikely, given their soft competition.

But, I always thought that a division winner would get home filed advantage over a wildcard team in an LCS regardless of records. Am I wrong? Did I miss a change when the second wildcard team was added?

I don't think that's changed. The only way the Cubs would have home field over the Mets would be if they won the NL Central and had a better (or equal) record than the Mets.

I just like catching the Cubs for honor's sake. I don't like the whole "Yeah the Mets are running away with their crap-assed division, but they'd be in fourth place in the NL Central" argument.

Now it's third place, suckers. Watch out Pirates.

Re: Standings, 2015

I can get down with that. Yeah, the NL Central is strong and the NL East is weak. Teams can only play the games given to them on their schedule.

The Mets' record is competitive with leaders in the NL West and all of the divisions in the AL.

Priorities for the remainder of the regular season (in order of importance, not time)
1) Clinch Division
2) Put a major hurting on the Yanx this weekend - hopefully to the point where it kills the division for them and puts the WC in jeopardy
3) Finish ahead of Dodgers
4) Try and catch the NL Central Winner

Yeah, you don't want to make too much of beating the Yankees. But while it may just seem like being grudgy, it has an actual tangible effect for the Mets prospects going forward if they continue to make inroads into the Yankees' hold on the marketplace.

Get a secondary color, suckers!

Plus that Sunday game against the Yankees is on ESPN. I want Gary, Keith and Ron doing the clincher.

Yeah, I don't have beating the Yankees to a pulp as a priority. But, doing so would help make progress towards steps 1, 3 and 4 on that list.

Plus, I would like them to continue the roll they are on against a team that is better than the Phils, Braves and Fish.

Except all 4(5) NL playoff teams are probably better than the Yankees.

Regardless of the validity of this claim, the Yankees certainly are the best team the Mets have faced since the trade deadline and it is a valid concern that we haven't see the Mets play against playoff-caliber opposition since July.

Edit: Second best-team. They played (and got swept) by the Pirates in August.

Re: Standings, 2015

I used to post the standings in this thread semi-regularly earlier this season. Here are some stockpiled images I was certain I'd have the opportunity to post:

Don't ask:

I didn't anticipate and so had nuthin' for the Cespedes Babe Ruth show and the juggernaut that the Mets have transformed into.

Re: Standings, 2015

I was thinking recently how this season most closely resembles 1969 in that the team that was on top much of the year faded in the end to the point where there was little drama by the final games.
The '69 Cubs were a better team than this year's Nats and meaning the Mets had more ground to make up and so by Game 144 (where we are now) had taken over 1st place only days earlier and were just 2.5 ahead.

19692015
Record after 144 games87 - 5783 - 61
Games Ahead+ 2.5+ 9.5
Streak as of gm 1449 Straight Wins en route to 108 Straight and counting
---Season finished w/2 vs CHISeason ends w/3 vs WAS
Final Margin+8 Games???

In fact Games 143 & 144 that year were the two famous 1-0 victories in a DH vs Pittsburgh where the pitcher drove in the run in each.
In the first, Koosman's 1-out single drove in Bobby Pfeil in the 4th as Kooz went on to hurl a 3-hit CG
Game two saw Don Cardwell single in Harrelson in the 2nd. He threw 8 innings of 4 hit ball w/help from McGraw in the 9th

The thing is, though, that the Nats weren't on top most of the year. The Mets wuz.

Just, you know, slowly fading into the early summer.

The Pirates beat the Cubs in game one of a doubleheader today by a score of 5-4. The Mets are now officially in front of the Cubs in the overall NL standings.

The Pirates are now only two games back of the Cards....and five up on the Cubs.

Ya know, I'd be rooting for St Loo to hold on. The Mets held their own against the Cards this year while getting annihilated by both the Pirates and Cubs. Having those two face each other in the knockout game is a good thing.

This. But in one game, the pitcher I fear most is Jake Arrietta. He'll go against the Pirates and hopefully knock them off. The rest of their pitching staff doesn't scare me that much (0-7 aside).

Having the 2 of the 3 best NL teams eliminated early is a nice quirk in the playoffs, if the Mets can take advantage.

Interesting question. Of the 5 NL teams that will make the playoffs in 2015, where do you rank the Mets?
Honestly? I see us as #3 at best, and maybe #4.

It doesn't mean we won't win the NLCS but I don't think it's unfair to consider it.

We beat the Dodgers in the NLDS, beat the Cardinals in the NLCS*, and beat the Royals in the World Series.

I figured the game would end on Molina striking out looking on a Niese curveball, but either one.

September double headers between contending teams makes for some pretty great baseball. You've gotta leave it all out on the field and then come back and play nine more.
