You're Sandy Alderson

... and you just found out your captain has a pulled hammy. (We don't know this [do we?], but it's a thought experiment).

Wright's heading to the DL. What's your other move? Who do you call up, and who do you start? Do you call up somebody and put him at third? Do you call up somebody and put him at second and move Murphy to third? Do you call up somebody to be a reserve, start Tejada at second, and move Murphy?

Do you even consider moving Flores?

Current infielders available:

Eric Campbell, currently on the roster with a 1.661 OPS in 23 plate appearances for Las Vegas:

1 game at 3b, [/*:m]

2 games at 1b, [/*:m]

2 games at lf.[/*:m][/list:u][/*:m]

Alex Castellanos, currently not on the roster with a 1.140 OPS in 19 plate appearances for Las Vegas:

1 game at 3b, [/*:m]

1 in rf.[/*:m][/list:u][/*:m]

Wilfredo Tovar, currently on the roster with an .800 OPS in 5 plate appearances for Las Vegas:

1 game at 3b.[/*:m][/list:u][/*:m]

Matt Reynolds, currently not on the roster with a .550 OPS in 24 plate appearances for Las Vegas:

5 games at ss.[/*:m][/list:u][/*:m]

Daniel Muno, currently not on the roster with a .490 OPS in 13 plate appearances for Las Vegas:

2 games at 3b, [/*:m]

1 g at 2b.[/*:m][/list:u][/*:m]

Dilson Hererra, currently on the roster with a .451 OPS in 19 plate appearances for Las Vegas:

4 game at 2b.[/*:m][/list:u][/*:m]

Dustin Lawley, currently not on the roster with a .970 OPS in 12 plate appearances for Binghamton:

3 games at 3b.[/*:m][/list:u][/*:m][/list:u]

Lotsa viable options, but Campbell's got to have an edge one way or another. Wouldn't be surprised to see them call up two guys and send Goeddel down.

Re: You're Sandy Alderson

Campbell definitely.

Herrera as well.

Re: You're Sandy Alderson

No transaction yet, but Campbell has been sent for.

I don't think Hererra gets called up unless he's hitting, and unless Murphy disappears. Muno or Reynolds for any potential slot two.

Re: You're Sandy Alderson

My vote is Murphy to third, Flores to second, Tejada to short.

I'm okay with them bringing up Campbell, but, maybe if not for the 40-man roster issue, I'd have gone with Reynolds. Same scenario as above, but with Reynolds at shortstop.

Re: You're Sandy Alderson

I guess another option, if Cuddyer is OK to play, is to use him at third and go with a Nieuwenberry platoon in left.

Re: You're Sandy Alderson

I'm not the world's biggest Soupy fan, if he's up I'm sure it won't be to start but to serve as an infield backup. I'd move Muffy to third and call up Reynolds to play second. If they need to waive a guy for roster space go with Goeddel or even Mejia! Then you can slot Reynolds into Wright's lineup spot and avoid too much other fucking-up.

I don't feel like they ought to be moving around Flores yet.

Re: You're Sandy Alderson

I agree with JCL. I don't think they should be messing with Flores right now. If we think he can be a long-term answer at shortstop we can't be moving him even temporarily.

I also don't think Campbell is someone I want to see out there every day, although I definitely want him in place of Goeddel as I think he's a useful spare part. I went with Herrera for 40-man roster purposes but I'd be happy to see Murphy at third and Reynolds at second.

Re: You're Sandy Alderson

I can see the argument for not moving Flores from short. If he stays there, Tejada can play second and Murphy can play third.

I'm not crazy about Tejada's bat replacing Wright's in the lineup. If it looks like he's going to be out much more than 15 days, then they should consider Reynolds, and find someone to bump from the 40-man. (Carlyle, perhaps?)

Any word on Cuddyer? I assume he's "day to day"?

Re: You're Sandy Alderson

All the more reason to bring up two offensive players.

If Cuddy can't go, we're talking about a three-man bench.

He claimed he'd be fine last night, but I don't think we'll get any definitive answers on this stuff until guys report to the ballpark.

MFY's Gardner took a similar shot the other night and is out thru Friday, just for comparison's sake (hit on the hand, xrays negative, left the game as a precaution etc etc)

In high school, I got hit on the hand by the pitching machine. My thumb turned several shades of purple and smarted like the devil, but it wasn't broken. I should've stormed the mound and given that pitching machine a few punches.

Re: You're Sandy Alderson

It's angle of encroachment man. We have an incredible intuitive sense of mechanics. Athletes much more so. And that last micro-second, when the ball is heading into your hands, they channel all forward momentum into their shoulders and hips and elbows, so the hands themselves can switch to backward momentum, and the hands are curling into the body at the same time. So what just missed being a 180-degree, head-on, speed-against-speed, bone-shattering nightmare, turns into a 25-degrees overtaking deflection.... that still hurts like the Devil.

Re: You're Sandy Alderson

It looks like Wheeler is still only on the 15 day DL. Moving him to the 60 day DL should open up a roster spot, so choosing someone not on the 40 man list does not seem like it would be a very big deal.

That being said, I like Campbell. I'm sure if Wright is out for any extended period of time that sandy and Terry will try all of the available options (though, none will be as good as having David).

Re: You're Sandy Alderson

I like Campbell too. Like that we have a lot of good options.

Hey, here's more upside: more time to heal Wright's shoulder!

Still would like to go a little while with a healthy Wright. He's been playing too hard for too long, trying to perhaps do too much.

The human hand is a truly remarkable thing. I've put my hands
through so much abuse over the years (including my sister-in-law
closing a car door on my hand) and have never broken a bone.

Re: You're Sandy Alderson

You know what you guys sound like? "Murphy to third. Reynolds, Reynolds, Reynolds. Reynolds REYnolds Reynolds, REYNOLDS Reynolds? Reynolds."

You know what you forget? Herrera's superior on-base skills/pop (with longer offensive track record than ol' one-year Reynolds at younger age, no less) and Herrera's defense (better at second, by all accounts, than Reynolds at any position). In addition, he's on the 40-Man, so there's that as well.

Gimme some Soup with some dil, son.

For whatever reason it feels like Dilson's star dimmed this spring while Reynolds' brightened considerably.

But if you really want to go alternative rock, here's an idea: Trade for Chase Figgin Utley.

Do it in a second I would, probably.

Re: You're Sandy Alderson

What would you give up and would you be willing to pay full freight? ($15 mill this year and $15 mill each of the next three years if he gets 500 at-bats in the previous season.)

I think it's a $2 million buyout elsewise. I imagine they'd take Daniel Muh straight up, as long as we threw in a fake prospect so it didn't look like they took Daniel Muh straight up.

Utley: 36 y/o (37 in December)
The contract, as discussed above, is just for this year except does vest year by year for the next two if he reaches 500 ABs
And, last night's show notwithstanding, those were his first HRs since last August (vs the Mets naturally - Wheeler to be specific) which represented the longest HR-less streak of his career.
Not a great time to be buying - although the situation might look different come July

In the meantime, re: Wright's DL time, I'd like to see Cuddyer get some time at 3B clearing room for some starts in the OF for Nieuwy & M'berry

I think I like that. Cuddyer's played 174 big league games at third base. I'd rather see Nieuwenhuis or Mayberry replace Wright in the lineup than Tejada or Campbell.

And then the weird part is that the shot off Blevins looked fairly benign.
I "knew" the shot d'Arnaud took was going to break something but then again I thought the same thing last week with Cuddyer.
