Hey, today the Council of Shipwrecks has allowed you to add one (1) track from Brit-rock Supergroup BAD COMPANY to the mixtape that will accompany you on your coming lifetime of solitude on a deserted island. Bad Co went into business in 1974 with investment from Led Zeppelin's Swan Song Records and their thug manager, Peter Green, and included Chief Vocal Officer Paul Rodgers and Director of Thumping Simon Kirke, formerly of Free; Secretary of Axe Mick Ralphs, who formerly worked under the same title for Mott the Hoople; and Bozz Burell, Chairman of Bass, recruited from King Crimson.

Bad Co had a terrific IPO, spinning off five Klassik Rawk staples -- most all concerning anticipation of laying pipe -- from each of its first 2 albums, but had a hard time maintaining like-for-like rock in subsequent years despite a surprise smash about Paul's creepy clown fantasies put them back in the black.

Enough with the biz metaphors and on with the Klassiks! Choose 1 or suggest a write-in.

Man alive, do I dislike this outfit. Everything wrong with plodding classick rock. Such plodding. No humor, no romance, no syncopation. You want to see where rock lost it's roll? This bunch is as good a place to point to as any. And who the hell is Paul Rodgers that he gets to sit in for both Robert Plant and Freddy Mercury in a single lifetime?

That said, I only know about half these traxx. And I'll give the others a listen with a hope to be surprised.

I wasn't aware that 'Bad Company', Rock Steady', Feel Like Makin' Love', 'Shooting Star', and 'Rock and Roll Fantasy' were different songs.

Re: The Company You Keep ... On A Desert Island

The thing is, you know ALL of these tracks. Maybe not "Everything I Need" That's why we're having this contest.

I don't hate these guys though they are kind of generic 70s blues-rock. I like Rodgers' voice.

"Good Lovin Gone Bad" is only 2:47, so it should be easy to fast forward through it.

Re: The Company You Keep ... On A Desert Island

You're thinking of Peter Grant. Green was the brilliant 'burst playin' blueser who went nuts. Bad Company -- they were better than Huey Lewis and The News. Probably.

Maybe.

If those were my choices, I'd ask Vic if I could borrow his coconut when he was done. Or before he was done, since he'd be out cold after.

I am squarely in the Edgy camp on this one. I'll listen to 'em, but it'll take a while.

Re: The Company You Keep ... On A Desert Island

And not just everything wrong with Classic Rock, but they exemplified everything that was wrong about 'Classic Rock Radio' -- a middling band (at best) that was played by CRR like they were a quarter-notch below the Beatles and Stones.
I guess their marketing research results told station managers that BC contained all the pseudo-bluesy/hard-rockin' sound that had a particular appeal to their treasured suburban white boys demographic. But that it resembled a sound as if designed by a committee to appeal specifically to that group and the fact that it was devoid of any soul whatsoever appeared to never even enter the equation.

Re: The Company You Keep ... On A Desert Island

Who said being stranded on a desert island was easy? Those who fail to commit to a choice shall be forced to put the entire BadCo box set on their walk men so stop hitting yourselves with coconuts and consider the merits.

give it up for Rodgers vocalizing.
Or the first 8 seconds of Rocknroll Fantasy.
Or the rhythm section that can't - can't get enough of your love.
Or whatever it is they did to get five fucking tunes from their debut into your brain forever. That's something.

Re: The Company You Keep ... On A Desert Island

Fwife, who eschews all classic rock in favor of what's current and hip, now, is a BadCo fan.

Which never stops being surprising to me. I am largely indifferent to them.

I'd vote for 'Burnin Sky,' just because it's not beaten to death by FM radio the way some of these other ones are. Fwife, when prompted, went with "Shooting Star" when presented with the choices.

Re: The Company You Keep ... On A Desert Island

Chicks who dig Bad Company are alright.

I didn't realize I'd accidently posted two albums up there but you know, make do.

I'm voting for Can't Get Enough. Funky muscle and geetar, Ralphs actually brought it to BadCo after failing to get it done with Mott the Hoople.

Re: The Company You Keep ... On A Desert Island

Most of the tracks high up on the list are like bad ZZ Top. Bluesy and occasionally twitchy but any funk or swagger they have seems forced. Their live videos are the worst — the five of them just standing there. Standing there. If they can’t shake their thing, I sure can’t.

“Run with the Pack,” And “Gone, Gone, Gone" on the other hand, sounds like bad AC/DC. “Burnin Sky” = bad Heart. I’ve got to give them credit for putting “Bad” in their band’s name. “Silver, Gold...” is like White Lion, or some flammable 80s hair band ballad.

I think I’m going with “Everything I Need” and their lo-fi Velvet Underground-y bouncing between two chords and hiccuping through a third in between.

Is that video for "Rock N Roll Fantasy" original? That model does not look like she's from 1979.

Well it's quite obvious from the sentiment here that BCO is trading at a discount to peers such as MTLF, REO, and JHX on the New York Rock Exchange.

Yes. I dreamt up the whole NYRE thing while running yesterday, both the idea of making some kind of participatory game out of it (didn't figure that part out yet) but also the idea of reducing every klassik rawk band name to a stock symbol of no more than 4 letters. Blue chippers get fewer letters just like on the real exchange.

Here's a representative Rockfolio:
B
RS
BB
JTL
TPH
ACDC
MBU
K
AER
FGT
JNY

K is Kinks

I think my stock symbol for Elvis Presley would be ELV or EVS or maybe LVS

Went with Shooting Star myself. Not totally indifferent, I lean to the like side, but never bought any of their discs. My younger brothers did. When we moved from NYC to South Jersey, these guys were playing in every bong-smoke filled room I ever entered. Bad Company and Ozzie Osborn. If some of the guys I met then heard this negativity in regards to BCO, they'd have egged your house.

Yeah, I was thinking they might have egged the house of my neighbor, or some guy who looked kinda like me, or maybe a guy with a similar name, or perhaps they just gotten halfway to my house and felt hungry and decided to eat the eggs.

I don't get these. Isn't TCB mall yogurt? I like B for The Beatles, KING for Elvis, EXP for the Jimi Hendrix Experience and TUNG for the Stones.

WHO for The Who, TULL for Jethro Tull.

Re: The Company You Keep ... On A Desert Island

Yeah JTL was supposed to be Jethro Tull but already confused a reader with James Taylor. JTRO could be another possibility, but TULL is probably best.

TCB was Takin-Care of Business. I do like KING for his symbol. Also frees up LVS for Elvis Costello.

edit -- also don't get YYY
