Should We Talk About the Government?: Taxes in 2015

We just got an IRS notice that our 2014 federal refund is being
applied to an old (legitimate) tax balance from a prior year.
Uh, we haven't filed 2014 yet.

Automated for sure.

It would be awesome if that eliminated the need to file 2014 at all.

Unfortunately, it's criminal identity theft.

Bummer. That's becoming more and more common. At least they money is going to your bill with the IRS, so the criminals won't get that part of it, at least.

I do have a question for NY filers. NYS claims that they send out tax refunds and pay them as they come in. But in all my years filing taxes, I've never gotten my check before April 1, even when I file in February. Has anyone ever gotten their refund check/direct deposit before that date?

I find it fishy, especially since that banks end the quarter on March 31 and pay interest on the money in the account on that date.

Yeah, it's too common. Ultimately, of course, the "refund" isn't
going to help us... it's not ours. Funny thing is it's 'good' we have
a past tax liability otherwise the douchebag(s) might have gotten
the money. It's big business, and the tax authorities seem to be
a little behind the times if they're authorizing an ~$3,500 tax re-
fund to my wife when we always file jointly.

This is going to be clusterfuck...

Have to:
[list:jj7rja74]File an Identity Theft Affidavit with the IRS
Notify all our financial institutions
Contact the fraud department in at least one of the three major credit bureaus
Report the activity to our local police department and get a police report
File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commision
Contact the Social Security Administration[/list:u:jj7rja74]

Yay!

That is more than anyone should have to handle.

You are a strong person and will get to the other side with this.

Be well.
