Schaefer Year Eleven

Voting for the 2015 Schaefer Mets Player of the Year Award will begin on Monday, April 6, the Crane Pool Forum has announced. This will be the eleventh season that Crane Pool Forum members will be participating in Schaefer voting. The Schaefer Mets Player of the Year Award was established in the 1970's, and Schaefer points were awarded by Mets broadcasters Lindsey Nelson, Ralph Kiner, and Bob Murphy. The award was re-established by the Crane Pool Forum in 2005. Third baseman David Wright has been the winner in in six of the ten years of the revived prize. The other winners were Johan Santana in 2008, Jose Reyes in 2011, Daniel Murphy in 2013, and Lucas Duda in 2014. A voting thread is opened in the forum at the conclusion of each regular season Mets game, according to CPF spokesmodel Benjamin Grimm. Voting generally stays open for two business days, after which the votes are tallied and the results are posted in the voting thread. In addition, says Grimm, each month a Schaefer Mets Player, Pitcher, Relief Pitcher, and Bench Player of the Month will be named. Just seeing all those cards in one place makes my day. I'm torn about which one I like best. Clearly the '72 Colon in action is a classic. The '77 Wright is perfection. The '76 Campbell looks like it just came out of a pack. I have fond memories of that set -- I pulled a Seaver in the first pack I opened that year, and declared I didn't have to buy another pack for the rest of the year, a vow that I believe lasted a day.

I don't know. The 1969 designs are uninspired and derivative to be sure. But the circles are two-toned, good contrasts on the colors, and the fonts pop more than the dark-gray-against-the-light gray fake script of 1970. Plus the excellent portraiture features the players with their hats on, which means more color. I just realized that a lot of what I don't like about 1970s are a lot of indifferently coiffed hatless portraits. The 1969 portraits are heroic. The 1970 features the greatest player on the planet in what looks like hostage photo. I guess what I hate is all the gray. It's like they they're asking me to buy the car while it still has its primer coat on. Do me the honor of finishing it, and then we'll talk.

I don't know; it's been a while since I tallied any Schaefer games! I know it works with the apostrophe, but I'm not sure if it works without it. So for now, I suppose I'd prefer if you included the apostrophe. Thanks for checking!

Just my opinion here -- and I don't generally even look at how others are voting much less notice a trend -- but I did today and Tejada seems to me to be getting schorted his schare of Schaefer considering his 3 hit (2B + 2 1Bs) 2 RS performance (Monday night's 7-0 rout of SD) one that saw his as the first guy on base in every run scoring inning except for the one that produced the final run and only the K + K/CS sequence prevented him from scoring more after he got to 3rd w/none out.

Next year there's going to be a new system, and games will generally be open for voting for a longer period of time. (I'm thinking at least two weeks.) It all stems from my desire to be less hands on with this. I won't have to fix spelling errors, or remind people to include first initials where necessary, or prorate totals over 10 points, or manage all of these voting threads. I'll also be able to retire my magic spreadsheet. More news on this during the offseason.
