Dillon Gee vs. Jarred Cosart

Jarred came over to the Marlins in the ..Jake Marisnick trade with the Astros. (is Marisnick the centerpiece of that deal? mostly a minors swap?)

Pitched pretty well for the Marlins, not as well the former Colt-45s. He's supposedly got quality pitchers but rarely executes them well. He doesn't strike guys out and has command issues.

More on Cosart:

1. Originally a Phillies prospect. One of the pieces they sent to Houston in the Hunter Pence deal.

2. Investigated by MLB for gambling due to suspicious comments he made via Twitter. Got fined by MLB for gambling on other sports (no evidence he gambled on baseball). http://www.foxsports.com/florida/story/ ... ion-040315

Miami at NY Mets
When: 7:10 PM ET, Thursday, April 16, 2015
Where: Citi Field, New York City, New York
SportsDirect Inc.

Even the loss of their decorated captain to injury wasn’t enough to keep the New York Mets from sweeping their first three-game home series of the year. The Mets look to continue their best start to a season since 2012 on Thursday when they host the Miami Marlins in the opener of a four-game set.

New York placed David Wright on the disabled list Wednesday after the seven-time All-Star third baseman pulled his right hamstring while stealing second in Tuesday’s win. Travis d'Arnaud filled his usual No. 2 spot in the batting order in style with a solo shot and two runs scored in Wednesday’s 6-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. The Marlins rode the hot bat of Adeiny Hechavarria to their first series win of the season, taking the last two of a three-game set from the Atlanta Braves following a 6-2 win. “Hech is a big part of our lineup. … What a great day on his birthday too. I know the guys were singing 'Happy Birthday' after his home run,” Marlins manager Mike Redmond said after his 25-year-old Cuban shortstop went 3-for-3 – including a two-run blast – Wednesday to highlight a 7-for-11 series.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Florida (Miami), SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins RH Jarred Cosart (0-1, 1.50 ERA) vs. Mets RH Dillon Gee (0-1, 9.00)

Cosart took a hard-luck loss in Saturday’s 2-0 home loss versus Tampa Bay, giving up one run on three hits and three walks over six frames. The 24-year-old went 4-4 despite a 2.39 ERA across 10 turns with Miami after he was acquired at the 2014 trade deadline in a deal with the Astros. Cosart, who has dropped his last four decisions, made his only career start against the Mets on Sept. 15, yielding two runs in six innings in a no-decision.

Although he extended his streak of lasting at least five innings to a league-high 47 straight starts, Gee could go no further in Saturday’s 5-3 setback in Atlanta. The former 21st-round selection gave up five of his eight hits and all of his runs in his final inning of work, departing after 75 pitches. Gee went 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA in two turns versus Miami last year and is 3-1 with a 2.84 ERA in six all-time starts against the Marlins.

WALK-OFFS:
1. Miami homered twice on Wednesday after hitting one over its first eight contests.
2. The Mets’ sweep of a home-opening series was only their third in their 53-year franchise history.
3. Redmond said LF Christian Yelich (back tightness) could return to the lineup in time for the opener. Ichiro Suzuki will draw the start if Yelich is unable to go.

Y'know how boxing not only added weight classes by tacking on 'Junior' or 'Super' onto each existing one (plus inventing some entire new ones - 'Cruiserweight' anyone?) but also had the competing alphabet soup of [crossout]corrupt thugs[/crossout] regulating bodies each declare their own king so that every third bout could be labeled as some sort of 'CHAMPIONSHIP' bout? ... well that's what we're doing here. If we do it creatively we hope to able to string this run of 'Opening Events' until sometime into mid-May so as to fool the masses into thinking they're buying into something special and increase our kickback cut of the gate receipts.

What Mid-May? This could go on all season long. There'll be the Syndergaard Home Opener in the Summertime. And then the Matz Home Opener after that. And another home opener for Montero's emergency start.

That's allowing ABSURD speculation to over-rule an ump who was 2 feet away with a better angle than any camera did.
They SUSPECT that d'Arnaud never applied the tag but there's no way they can KNOW that but decided to go ahead and rule that way anyway.

Maybe I'm alone in this, but I don't mind the four-minute delay for the challenge. It made for compelling television, with a nice sense of suspense. My wife, who really doesn't care about baseball at all, put down what she was doing and was drawn in, watching the different replay angles and trying to determine what the right call was. (For the record, I thought Ichiro was safe, so I couldn't be too upset when the call was reversed.)

I also pegged him for 30 homers in the expectations threads a year or two before it happened.

I had faith in the guy. I just had more faith in Davis in the context you created, which seemed artificial to me at the time, but turned out to be bone-chillingly real.

Looks like Ralph, Keith (and my father) were right. Thanks to Seawolf for sending along some extra Duda rookie? cards for him, even if it confused my wife as to why I was getting mail from Stonybrook.

It was posted by someone in the offseason that Duda could be more "looming". I would say that Duda has become a loomoing presence to opposing pitchers.

Lucas Duda absolutely raked it at every level of pro baseball he ever played at. Sometimes though, he'd need some time to adjust. The man can hit.*

Just don't put him in the outfield, thank you.

Look, I'm very happy Duda has had 10 good games and so has gotten off to a strong start, but he's a lifetime .250 hitter, so lets not designate him the face of the franchise for the next decade just yet.

Point well taken. But I'd take Duda over Wright in a bet over who's the best hitter going forward over the rest of their careers.

Doodoo

on edit: Seriously, yes he's a .250 career hitter but those "hard-hit ball" metrics have always liked Doodoo a lot and suggest he's a very capable slugger.

My favorite part of the postgame may have been that on-field interview with NotKevin, if only because Lucas was all false-modesty-shucks, when you know he knows what's different about his approach, it's just that you're not going to be privy to that, NotKevin.

Yes it's only ten games ... BUTTTTT
1) he's hitting LHPs better (4 for 8 so far)
2) he's using all parts of the field

Re: IGT #10 4/16 vs Marlins: Dillon Gee Home Opener

clearly BA is not the end all or be all, and should be given vastly less credit than it has been for most of the 20th century, but it's not meaningless. And walks are good, and have been undervalued, but they are not QUITE as good as actual hits. A walk isn't going to drive in a guy, unless the bases are loaded at the time. In which case, a hit would still drive in more. Given a guy who hits .250/30hrs and one who hits .300/30 hrs, I'll take the guy who hits .300, thanks.

And yes, Duda hits the ball hard, and he's hitting LHPers better, even going the other way on occasion. These are all good things and bode well. But its still just 10 games. Even Duda realizes that and said as much. Can he maintain this new approach for a month, much less a whole season? I hope so, but its still an open question until he does it.

Re: IGT #10 4/16 vs Marlins: Dillon Gee Home Opener

consider he's been pretty damn good for years I'd imagine that's so.

Sure, hit's produce more runs than walks do, but I'd rather have the guy that takes 10 more walks than the guy that has 10 more hits. In almost every case the guy that walks is the better player.

i.e. a guy batting .270/.330 produces more runs than a guy batting .300/300.

So yeah, Duda's fine at .250/.350

How do you know? The .300 hitter will have a higher SLG and perhaps OPS.

Need more info. And not necessarily true, even with those scant numbers you post.

Agreed. But this is baseball. Lets get excited about the possibility.

I have put in for a nickname change. He has grown out of The Dude.
The Lumberjack. Get it? He takes the lumber and then he jacks one!
