Thoughts on the Game 4/27

I don't really have a feel for this ballpark yet, but even thinking like it was the old, cavernous Miami stadium, Murphy's shot felt gone off the bat.

Can you imagine if this is what Gee is becoming? If everybody is taking a cue from Harvey or whoever and just throwing strikaroonies? Among Colon, Harvey, and deGrom, this pitching staff was already looking like George Bamberger's fantasy team. If Niese and Gee get with the program and stay effective — mon Dieu! — this may not be our last 90-minute win.

Eighty-six pitches combined among three guys, with 68 going for strikes (79.1%). Could this have been the strikiest night in Mets history?

Three walks to Duda, and really, very little hittable was thrown to him. You get the idea the whole division is afraid of him right now, and he's willing to take the free passes, until they come around. Too bad that Cuddyer couldn't punish them for it, but when the team gets closer to full strength, that strategy isn't going to keep working. and besides, eventually Murphy did punish them for it. It just took 25 outs first.

Flores looked pretty good all night in the field. I'm not afraid that he'll stink. I have no illusions of him being a big defensive asset, but I am afraid that a bad series like the one in the Bronx could send him into a spiral. Not this time.

I mentioned in the IGT, but not bunting last week against extreme shifts that Atlanta and the Yankees were using, with creaky old catchers, but then laying one down against Realmuto, who is a shortstop in catching gear, that hurt. Great play by him.

Miami booth tended to sing the praises of Ozuna's defense during the game, like, "We have two of the best defensive center fielders out there." Yeah, not so much two.

Campbell, as Frayed Knot showed, is a good heads-up baserunner. But Cishek was asleep out there and he has a big, noisy delivery motion. Make a note of that and keep running on him.

Pretty sweet to put a stop to Miami's recovery. Keep it up and Backman may get a job yet.

I hope we don't have more 90-120 minute games. Too fast. build some drama.

plus, opponent throwing strikes or not, take some pitches, foul some off, give Gee a moment to catch his breath!

Gee can be alright, but he doesn't have enough talent to always do that. when he hits his spots, sure, he can hang with anyone, but he can't get away with bleeding into the strike zone too much or a stingy ump.

I don't think it's a surprise that Gee has excellent, and moreso as offense has declined (thanks in part to a bigger strike zone) leaguewide.

Not knocking Gee by any means. I'm happy with what he's given us over the years and I'm not looking to chase him based on his abilities, but we still have (likely) upgrades.

Everyone-- at least the would-be pundits-- seemed to see him as something of a Teixeira/Dunn type after last year and the last few. Honestly, though, he looks a little Vottoish in the early going, doesn't he? Walks if that's what's given, spoiling what he doesn't like (with increasing efficacy), and maintaining an open stance right up until the load.

Looking for the stats on this, but I'm pretty sure we've run very successfully on him in recent years.

Re: Thoughts on the Game 4/27

* Murphy's shot -- that was about six rows deep over a 392 sign. I wasn't sure it was gone off the bat but I knew it had at least tied up the game. He certainly put a charge into that one.

* on Gee -- folks tend to forget that he had a 28-start/176-inning stretch (from his NYY game in May 2013 thru his injury of '14) where he rung up a cumulative 2.76 ERA and 1.11 WHiP. Not saying we should expect this as the norm but he's certainly capable of lengthy stretches of goodness.

* Cishek was certainly pitching away from Duda. He can be a good pitcher but it's tough to rely on a LH-closer who's so vulnerable (and/or 'fraidy-scared) to LHBs

* Lagares would have caught Ozuna's shot had it been the exact same as Lagares's shot which Ozuna couldn't reach

* it wasn't on the bunt/DP play, but Realmuto definitely used his mask on one play to (briefly) stop a rolling ball. That's definitely not kosher although I don't know exactly how the rule reads.

* while I wouldn't want super-quick games to be the norm, last night's was nice as a change given the lengthening trend of recent years. Nothing wrong also with games that run 3+ hours, it's just that low-walk/low-hit games should be quick because everything else is, virtually by definition, dead time.

Not so much. Against Cishek the Mets have stolen two bases and been caught once in 31 innings. This is a guy who's allowed 15 stolen bases in his career. And 11 home runs; Murphy's was the first one he's ever allowed to the Mets. They've always hit him hard, but that was a pretty fluky inning.

Cishek is a righty, by the way. He's got a reason to pitch around Duda.

I like Gee...he can get shelled occasionally, but more often than not, he'll keep the team in the game. What more can you ask from the bottom of your rotation?

I didn't think Murph's HR was gone off the bat, but like FK knew that it tied the game. I love the fact that the Mets are 10 games over and he is just now starting to show life.

Big, big win...for many reasons.
