IGT 5/3/15 WAS @ NYM: Gee, If You Don't Mind

Must-ish, if not a "must win". Don't let the fourth-place Nationals leave with any kind of head-to-head upper hand.

Gee vs. Fister, speaking of body parts.

Washington at NY Mets
When: 1:10 PM ET, Sunday, May 3, 2015
Where: Citi Field, New York City, New York
SportsDirect Inc.

The Washington Nationals continue to make themselves feel at home at Citi Field and can send the host New York Mets to a third straight series loss on Sunday, when the National League East rivals wrap up their four-game set. The Nationals handed the Mets their first shutout defeat of the season with a 1-0 victory on Saturday to improve to 16-2 in their last 18 games in New York.

Ian Desmond scored the lone run in Saturday's triumph after breaking an 0-for-29 slump and was among three players with two hits for Washington. The Mets, meanwhile, have dropped six of their last nine since ripping off a franchise record-tying 11-game winning streak. Ace Matt Harvey was responsible for two of the three victories in that span while the third win resulted from a strong outing by Dillon Gee, who will make the start in the series finale. Gee will oppose Doug Fister, who has won all four of his career starts against New York.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, MASN (Washington), SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Doug Fister? Ibkh!© (1-1, 3.28 ERA) vs. Mets RH Dillon Gee (0-1, 4.26)

Fister is coming off his second straight sub-par outing, giving up five runs (four earned) on a season-high 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings in a loss at Atlanta. Fister has excelled at keeping the ball in the park for most of his career but has been victimized by three homers in his last two outings. He yielded two earned runs in winning all three starts against the Mets last season, including both turns at Citi Field.

Gee was knocked around for nine runs over 10 2/3 innings in his first two starts of the season but has rebounded with a pair of strong efforts. He limited Miami to one run over 7 2/3 frames last time out after going seven innings and permitting two runs versus Atlanta in his previous turn. Bryce Harper is 7-for-19 with two homers off Gee, who is 8-4 with a 3.69 ERA in 16 career starts against the Nationals.

WALK-OFFS:
1. Harper drew his major league-leading 24th walk to extend his on-base streak to a career-best 18 games.
2. Gee has served up 16 homers in 100 innings versus Washington.
3. Nationals CF Denard Span, who exited the series opener due to abdominal soreness, is expected to return to the lineup Sunday.

Falling behind 1-0 after uncharacteristically walking the leadoff batter, then failing twice to turn a potential double play = not part of a winning game plan.

Harper makes the catch, yet he still sucks. That's the wonder of baseball.

Plawecki doubles, one out in the 7th. It's now or never....(or the 8th or the 9th)

That one the Nats put up looks awfully lonely.

That was a terrible turn at the plate for Tejada. I get that Fgiving Flores has earned a few days off but we just don't have the option to be carrying a weak as hitter at ss.

During the streak we won a few we shouldn't have. Even after, but the last few we should have won. You get pitching like we have, you gotta win these games or in the long run you will not be a winning team.

Would have been nice if maybe one or two of the NYM hitters had forced any of the Nats pitchers to actually throw a ball over the plate during those last three innings.

Re: IGT 5/3/15 WAS @ NYM: Gee, If You Don't Mind

Yeah, Kirk is pretty worthless to this ball club right now. The fact that he was sent up to hit for Tejada shows Ruben's value as well.

Horrible way to end a series...especially before an off day.

You're never as good as you look when you're winning or as bad as you look when you're losing...but the last ten games are very concerning to me.

Re: IGT 5/3/15 WAS @ NYM: Gee, If You Don't Mind

Yeah but Kirk was hardly the only problem today. Over the last three innings - especially after Fister left - none of the Washington relievers were getting the ball over the plate but our guys were making outs anyway; Duda, Murphy, Cuddyer, and more were ahead in the count and swinging at bad pitches, often with men on. That bullpen is very beatable and in four days we barely touched it.

Nieuwenhuis is in the Catch-22 of needing more ABs to get hits hits but then he needs some hits if he wants more ABs. You could send him down but then who fills the LH/PH spot? Johnny Monnel is hitting in Vegas (although everyone hits in Vegas) but isn't as defensively versatile.

Re: IGT 5/3/15 WAS @ NYM: Gee, If You Don't Mind

I thought that they couldn't send him down without "exposing him to waivers" which was why he stayed and Matt dD departed.

Re: IGT 5/3/15 WAS @ NYM: Gee, If You Don't Mind

Well, yeah, that too.

So a better way to say it would be that even if you do get rid of him [by sliding him through waivers, by releasing him, trading him, whatever] what you'll want as a replacement for him is essentially a version of him: a lefty bat, preferably with some power potential, who can play the OF.
IOW, yeah he's been bad (in a limited sample) but it's not like there's a better option just sitting around back in the storage closet somewhere waiting to be dusted off.

Re: IGT 5/3/15 WAS @ NYM: Gee, If You Don't Mind

Well, I would imagine the replacement they would seek would be a guy who is more field tested as a bench player.

Agreed...but not having suitable replacement doesn't make him any less useless. The fact that the Mets can't send him down without exposure makes the situation even more aggravating as I think Kirk could benefit from a couple weeks of playing everyday to get his bat going.

The lack of any lefty bench hitters is one (of a few) glaring weaknesses on this team.

Re: IGT 5/3/15 WAS @ NYM: Gee, If You Don't Mind

He's certainly demonstrated usefulness in the past. It's cold comfort now, of course. But the challenge is when to distinguish a current and active pattern of failure with an actual inability. It's even harder to distinguish in the low-sample-size/high-stakes world of lefty pinch hitting.

AAA options are available: Alex Castellanos, Johnny Monell, Darrell Ceciliani, Travis Tajeiron (righty, but still), Cory Vaughn. All are hitting (including Vaughn, who hasn't hit consistently for the last three seasons, it seems) as the 51s streak on. Castellanos has the highest OPS in the PCL by like 160 points.

I tend to think, though that they're looking at trades. San Francisco has supposedly been scouting the Mets, and Gee and Murphy would fit well with them, even if Gee's last start was a head-scratcher. Indeed, if Dilson gets going, it might solve a few problems, with Murphy himself turning out to be the veteran lefty on the bench for the team.

Then I don't think he's taking Kirk's job, for a myriad of other reasons.

I think Murph being the primary left-handed pinch hitter being the sixth infielder is fine, whether or not he can play the outfield.

I need to see more from Herrera at the plate against ML pitching...but Murph could be an option as a lefty bench player. He could still start a couple times a week to spell Wright and Herrera.

I hope Terry and Sandy are having these same conversations today.

I'm sure they have them all the time. But yeah, Murphy is still our best offensive second baseman choice, and offense is still our #1 problem.

We need Wright and d'Arnaud back. Or one of our middle infielders to actually hit.
