Odd move.

I'd guess for Recker but who knows. But I doubt Monell is the answer to any of the Mets questions right now.

Baltimore at NY Mets
When: 7:10 PM ET, Tuesday, May 5, 2015
Where: Citi Field, New York City, New York
SportsDirect Inc.

The New York Mets need to find a way to get their offense untracked as they prepare to host the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday in the opener of a two-game interleague set. New York is coming off back-to-back 1-0 home losses to the Washington Nationals to tumble to 3-7 since tying a franchise record with an 11-game winning streak.

The Mets dropped 1-0 games on consecutive days for the first time since 1990 and have scratched out only 12 runs during a 1-5 stretch. “As we said when we won 11 in a row: Hey, we’re going to have a downtime,” New York manager Terry Collins told reporters. “We didn’t think it was going to be right away, but we’re going to have one. You’ve just got to play through it.” The Orioles are playing through adversity of their own, winning two of three at Tampa Bay after the series was shifted to Florida due to security concerns following the rioting in Baltimore. Center fielder Adam Jones went 4-for-4 with a tiebreaking two-run single Sunday to push his American League-leading batting average to .402.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Baltimore), SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Bud Norris (1-2, 12.18 ERA) vs. Mets RH Bartolo Colon (4-1, 3.31)

Although he received tons of run support, Norris turned in a much-needed solid start versus Boston last time out, allowing three runs over a season-high 6 2/3 innings to earn his first victory. The 30-year-old Californian was shelled by Toronto for nine runs in his previous outing and had failed to go beyond five innings in his first three starts. Norris is 1-1 with a 4.68 ERA in five career starts versus New York.

Colon is fewer than three weeks shy of his 42nd birthday but the burly Dominican is showing no signs of his age despite coming off his first loss, when he permitted four runs in 6 2/3 innings at Miami. Colon has worked at least six innings in each of his five starts and has walked only one while striking out 25 in 32 2/3 innings. Colon has made 27 appearances (26 starts) against the Orioles, going 12-8 with a 3.25 ERA.

WALK OFFS:
1. Jones is the first Orioles player to record three four-hit games in the first 23 contests of a season.
2. Mets SS Wilmer Flores, who sat the past two games following a 2-for-20 slump, is expected to return to the starting lineup.
3. New York has won the past six meetings against Baltimore.

Quickie O's KTE

Adam Jones (CF) and Manny Machado (3B) play everyday and are both real good with stick and with glove. Jones in particular is hitting over .400 this season.
C - Caleb Joseph is filling in quite well so far [.305/.414/.475] for the (once again) injured Matt Weiters. Joseph also spent the empty-stadium game last week pantomiming signing autographs along the stands and high-fiving and cap-tipping to the imaginary fans.
1B - Chris Davis had a GREAT 2013 but is now trying to come back from a bad 2014 which ended with a drug suspension.
2B - Rookie Rey Navarro & journeyman Steve Pearce have been sharing the job.
SS - Evreth cabrera (ex of Sandy Eggo) is one of the short stops we opted not to pursue over the winter and, at the moment, he's doing about what all the SS we didn't sign are doing [.221/.235/.247]
A variety of guys seem to be manning the corner OF/DH/PH spots following the loss of Nick Markakis, none on a regular basis or to any particular distinction: Alejandro de Aza, David Lough, Steve Pearce, Travis Snider, Delmon Young, Jimmy Paderes

26-year-old, switch-hitting Paredes is doing pretty decently (.353/.367/.667 with 3 HRs in 52 PAs) and has been getting some 2B reps with Jonathan Schoop hurt.

Yeah, several of those platoon/OF/IF/DH guys have some decent numbers, but no one seems to have a specific, full time job to call his own and of course they're going to have to lose one of them during this series on account of no DH. Plus any set-up that involves Delmon Young on the field with a glove in his hand is a net plus for the opposing team.

One of those games where it seemed like we should have had more than 3 runs - on the other hand if we didn't bunch those doubles the way we did then it could have been even fewer.
Pitching was great, Machado and Davis can do that to anyone (you know both were gone before they cleared the infield airspace) so there's nothing to worry about on that front.
Nice to get back on the winning side; going for the sweep tomorrow.

So far this year, Colon has walked one batter in 40.1 innings.

Bartolo's walk rate so far this season is less than half that of even the 2nd best in the majors and 1/3 that of the guy in 3rd
- Colon = .223 [walks per/9 innings]
- Jason Hammell (CHC) = .575
- Michael Pineda (NYY) = .686
- Josh Collmenter (ARZ) = .827
- Phil Hughes (MIN) = .956

and those are the only five guys (counting both leagues) that are even under 1.00

Not sure how historically out of line this is. Bret Saberhagen is a guy I think of for low walks and his lowest over a full season (it was his 3rd season as a Met) was 0.6598

oe: ah, here we go, lowest since 1900 is Carlos Silva for the 2005 Twins: 0.4301
To illustrate how freakish Silva's 2005 was, it, Saberhagen's (shortened season) 1994, and Phil Hughes from last year [0.6868] are the only seasons since 1920 in the top 50 of all time.

Re: I.G.T. 5/5/15 Orioles v Mets Norris v. Colon

He walked Ryan Zimmerman in the sixth inning on opening day, after he had already whiffed Zimmerman twice. The walk set up runners on first and second with two out, but he then whiffed Wilson Ramos.

He's now gone 34 2/3 innings without a walk. The record, amazingly, is 84 1/3 innings, by Bill Fischer of the Kansas City Athletics, in 1962. Fischer was good but not great overall that year, swinging between the rotation and the bullpen, but he was probably the best they had, and they should've stuck with him as a starter. He probably made the games too short and cut into the beer sales.

the play-index page is great. It's always (for a while?) been a pay service for all the results. you can sometimes tweak it (sort by the reverse thing and scroll to the end)

but if you run as many queries as I do and are as lazy about setting up your own db (particularly for current season!) it's well worth it.

It's only $15 with a draftkings deposit. otherwise I think it's $30 with code 'bp'.
