The Marlins have a lot of vowels in their catching corps, and no small amount of consonants as well, with Jarrod Saltalmacchia backed up by J.T. Realmuto. Salt has gotten off to a Barajasian start, hitting safely in only two of his first 22 at-bats, but those two hits represent a double and a homer. Low average combined with the strength to punish a mistake is the way he rolls. The Marlins tried to deal him this offseason, but could not find a taker, which has got to burn a guy's butt, knowing the millions you're owed is the only reason your team is keeping you. But hey, there's comfort in the millions. Salty's still a good receiver that his pitchers tend to like, but Realmuto is emerging as one of the better Marlins prospects and will probably be running the show with Jeff Mathis as a backup before the first half is out. Drives the ball but strikes out a ton. Overall, a pretty good hitter, one of the few the Marlins have with any reliability.

Speedy Dee Gordon is new at 2nd base too for Miami this season. A 4 year vet of the LA Dodgers (although only one complete season there) he'll run (led NL in triples and SB last season) and slap the ball around (just 4 HRs in 1,200+ ABs) and a 50 point jump in his BA in 2014 leads to hopes that the 27 y/o son of former ML pitcher Tom Gordon is on the verge of coming into his own as a premier 2nd baseman. I've heard he's less than you'd want as a defensive 2B although I claim no personal knowledge here. Was acquired by Miami this past December via a seven-player (plus cash) deal where the biggest piece going back the other way was minor league pitching prospect Andrew Heaney. In addition to his pops, brother Nick is a SS drafted 5th overall by Minnesota last June.

Veteran Martin Prado is one of those guys who by many accounts deserves the "great teammate" tag but at the same time he can't stop getting traded. He's at third base for the Marlins this season after being traded by the MFYs for Nathan Eovaldi. Sent most of his career with the Braves. A steady-ish 14-homers a year guy, but not the kind of bat you want at third base allatime.

The Marlins have what is frequently referred to as the "best young outfield in baseball," and occasionally as "the best young outfield in baseball until the Mets simultaneously promote Nimmo and Conforto." This begins with leftfielder Christian Yelick. He debuted in 2013 with a .288 / .370 / .396 // .766 line over 60 games, and then did pretty much exactly the same (.284 /.362 / .402 // .764) over 144 games last year. So perhaps that's all there is. It's alright, but my socks are decidedly not blown off. He made this impressive catch against the Braves this week, and has been paying for it with back soreness. This may mean we'll see more of Ichiro this series, and nobody has used his name and the phrase "best young outfield in baseball" together in a long time. And perhaps never in English. In CF for Miami is Marcell Ozuna who has burned us in the past both offensively and defensively. Still just 24 y/o despite beginning his 3rd year in MLB, the Dominican import rung up 54 XBHs in his only full season in 2014 [.269/.317/.455] Off to a slow start this season: 6/28 with 1 2B

On the starting pitching front, we're going to be seeing: - 'Gamblin' Jarred Cosart on Thursday Already discussed somewhat in the IGT thread, Cosart is 14-13, 3.22, 1.35 WHiP over 41 starts in his ML career - ex-MFY David Phelps on Friday Phelps spent the last three seasons flip-flopping between the Yanx pen and their rotation: 87 games, 40 starts. 15-14, 4.21, 1.35. He came with Prado in the previously mentioned Eovaldi trade - Mad Mat Latos on Saturday I've made no secret here of my dislike for Latos. Just gives the impression of being a big, dumb, hot-headed jock who's probably not popular with his teammates either. The 28 y/o ex-Padre/ex-Red has been absolutely bombed in his two Marlins starts so far to the tune of 10 runs (9 earned) on 11 hits & 5 walks in just 4.2 innings. Go get another 'Tat' you overgrown, Nazi Youth-looking freak. - and 'Seawolf' Tom Koehler on Sunday Koehler's now in his 4th season w/the Marlins: 16-22, 4.09, 1.32 The former Stonybrook hurler pitched twice against the Braves this season, winning once and losing once, with about the same mediocre line in each: 2 runs over 5-6 innings We manage to miss, despite this being a four-game series: Dan Haren (who pitched on Wednesday), Henderson Alvarez who was placed on the DL several days back, and of course Jose Fernandez whose ETA from TJ surgery is probably around mid-season.
