Guys already on the roster are shown in blue. If we have to disable both d'Arnaud and Blevins (and based on the last time I checked, I would guess we do), the decision seems to point straight to Monell and Leathersich, though Ricecakes and Alvaraez both have room for hope.

Also possible that Gilmartin and Torres do the left-handing and the Mets call up a righty. Kudos to Sandy for seemingly needing one left-hander and going out and getting two.

Word is out that it'll be Hansel Robles and Kevin Plawecki. I guess that make Giltorres the lefty killer.

Funny, I too have the feeling that we won't be seeing much
of d'Arnaud again in these parts.

Sandy's looking pretty smart to me. Because of his moves, or lack of moves, we were prepared for stuff like this. But I'm thinking we were prepared for over the long season. W/Wright and these two down today, all of this in around a week...it's really kind of unbelievable. How prepared are we for the rest of the season?

I think it's got to be Monell gets the call.

Mmm. Thought they'd go with the hot hand. Hope Plawecki is up for this.

Re: Options

I feel confident we'll see more of d'Arnaud. He's hitting a lot better than Wally Pipp was. And Pipp was 32. And as hopeful as one may be about Plawecki, there's little reason suspect he's a catching Lou Gehrig.

I've been all high on "The Lumberjack" so I was saving my praise of d'Arnaud for a future time. I was very happy with his performance and consider him a big part of this team now. Even if Plawecki excels, I expect 'lil d' to return.

Re: Options

If Blevins' season is done, he'll have thrown five Metly innings, coming up two outs short of the best unblemished career in team history, behind only Dan Schatzeder and C.J. Nitkowski (fellow lefty short relievers both), who each pitched and punched their Metly cards at 5 2/3 innings, without giving up a run.

Re: Options

The difference here being that Blevins had yet to surrender a hit or even a baserunner whereas Schatzeder & Nitkowski were allowing >1 baserunner/inning and so must have spent all their time dancing around trouble during their (brief) NYM lives.

This is now around 30% of the projected (or at least possible) opening day roster that's been DL'd: Wright, Wheeler, Edgin, d'Arnaud, Blevins, Mejia, Black [7 of 25 = 28%] and that doesn't even include Parnell.
That's a lot for the 3rd week in April.

So then, he's sitting on what may turn out to be the perfectest season in Metly history.

Re: Options

In the meantime you may have seen that Vic Black is going back to the doctor's office for more tests: His rehab went further than Parnell's so far but this appears to be another setback.

Robles has been excellent in Vegas so far.

We are losing important pieces day by day. It has to catch up at some point.

Yes, but we're WINNING. This would be MUCH worse if we were 3-10 and losing important pieces.

WE'VE GOT THIS.

Re: Options

d'Arnaud was easily our most improved player to this point. I don't see Plawecki coming close to matching what d'Arnaud has been doing, much less giving the Mets a reason to "Wally Pipp" d'Arnaud, but I'm hopeful he'll be at least decent.

Alderson also deserves credit for not being too quick to cut ties with Gilmartin. Hopefully Gilmartin rewards the confidence.

I'll feel much better about our pen when (if?) Black and Parnell come back. Until then, where's the duct tape?

I guess you are saying we have the depth to get through this so relax. Works for me!!

Re: Options

The good news is that there is a lot of depth. But the question is, as the injuries pile up, will it be enough depth?

Over the long term, Plawecki may very well turn out to be a better catcher/hitter than d'Arnaud. But over the next few weeks, I expect he'll be a bit of a downgrade. Blevins is probably replaceable too. I'm hoping that both of these guys will be back inside of six weeks, but I have no idea whether that hope is at all realistic.

Re: Options

An ironic upside to a surplus injuries is, if you can hang in there, healing players are always on the way back.

Of course, that means you have to hang in there, and they have to come back relatively whole.

Great. Maybe we should stick deGrom's right arm in a wood chipper.

Re: Options

This must be bittersweet for Plawecki. Sure, he gets to spend a month or so as a starting big-league catcher, but it kills his chance to be the 1000th Met.

I did think they'd bring up Monell. He seems more prepared to be a stopgap.

Re: Options

I thought they would also.

I think there are concerns about Monell's defense. They are likely going to put Plawecki as the number one guy, and could neither abide that defense every day, nor Recker's offense (which was perfectly fine last year until he became the number one during the brief interregnum while d'Arnaud was clobbering the ball in Vegas).

If Monell is to appear, it'll likely be if Recker gets hurt, or at some point if they want to experiment with three catchers.

This could also be understood as them expecting a bit of a long haul sans d'Arnaud.
