We're fine. The office sent us all home yesterday at 2:00. We all thought it was an over-reaction. We all thought wrong. Working from home today and a little less able to effectively do my job at a time when getting my job done is a little more important.

Down the right field line... into the crowd...

Wow. Does anybody retrieve the foul balls, or do they just rest there under the seats like Easter eggs waiting for the next home game?

A Boy Named Seo Apr 29 2015 01:02 PM Re: What if they played a baseball game, and nobody showed u |
It's a strange and eerie game to watch. After a strikeout or a hit, there's a smattering of applause from people in the dugout and a handful of fans outside the stadium looking in. Must feel in some ways like a scrimmage for the players.

No announcements? No 7th inning stretch?
|
A Boy Named Seo Apr 29 2015 01:11 PM Re: What if they played a baseball game, and nobody showed u |
No, I hear the PA announcing guys. Not sure on the 7th inning stretch, but I gotta doubt it.
|
Edgy MD Apr 29 2015 01:15 PM Re: What if they played a baseball game, and nobody showed u |
Seventh-inning stretch is scheduled to take place. There was a National Anthem too, though I don't know if it was performed or canned.

Frayed Knot Apr 29 2015 01:19 PM Re: What if they played a baseball game, and nobody showed u |
There does appear to be a PA announcement for each AB but it's barely audible even without the crowd so I'm thinking that maybe it's aimed at those beyond the gates*. Certainly no point in telling anyone in the stadium who's up.

Benjamin Grimm Apr 29 2015 01:26 PM Re: What if they played a baseball game, and nobody showed u |
The announcement is kind of required, isn't it, at least for pinch hitters, because that's when they're officially in the game. A manager waits for the left-handed pinch hitter to be announced, for example, before he tells the umpire that he's bringing in a lefty reliever.

Technically the change is official when the home plate ump signals the official scorer in the press box that the guy walking up to the plate in the new hitter in that lineup slot. Whether it subsequently gets announced over a loudspeaker or not isn't necessary. But yeah, as a matter of consistency, it's probably best to continue the standard practice.

Edgy MD Apr 29 2015 01:41 PM Re: What if they played a baseball game, and nobody showed u |
It would be even more surreal if they just used a guy with a megaphone cone. Or gave such a device to the home plate ump. You'd figure that would do the trick.

Don't you need to at least start your leap on the playing field for the catch to be legal? IOW, you can climb the fence, make the catch, and then fall into the seats, but not jump the fence first then make the catch while standing in Row C. And while we're on the subject: Alex Gordon's catch over this past weekend, Now THAT (speaking to announcers here) was a catch diving into the stands and, no, it wasn't anything like Jeter's. Jeter's catch, although a nice hustling play, was was caught not only on the playing field **BUT ALSO IN FAIR TERRITORY** before he subsequently went into the front rows because he couldn't stop in time. I fear we've been sentenced to hear every current and future into-the-stands catch for the rest of time likened (and often found inferior in comparison) to the one by St Derek a decade or more ago even when the ones that are considerably better and not remotely similar.

That's long been my assumption, but never have the stands been so close, the walls so low, and the damn interfering fans so absent to put the rule to the test.
Yeah, all the bullshit about him while he was playing at least had to be tempered a bit by the reality that he was a human being right there before your own eyes. But now that he's gone, that living evidence goes with him, and so the myth takes over, and distortions can go unchecked.

So what do we make of the fact that this game, which had 10 runs, 15 hits, 16 Ks, 2 walks and 6 pitchers (although no in-inning changes), was played in just 2:03 ?
|
Edgy MD Apr 29 2015 06:53 PM Re: What if they played a baseball game, and nobody showed u |
And/or other fan-targeted efforts that aren't necessarily player-generated.

I can't think of any examples of what those things might be, especially now that they're (supposedly) adhering to guidelines that govern the time between innings*. Whatever it might be, if I'm MLB, I'm studying the game tapes to find out. * Except for the 7th inning stretch at YSIII of course (and select Sunday games at other parks) where the Yanx put on a full dog and pony show so as to reenforce the idea that George personally invented patriotism. If they want to do that, fine, but that doesn't mean they have to televise it also (what, guards forcibly restraining paying customers from leaving their seats during those few minutes isn't enough?) and if they do want to televise it then they don't get to run a full slate of commercials right afterward. Either/or, not both.

Which is BS isn't it? There were tickets sold to that game. Or did they give a full refund to everyone and not just a 'come to another game'?
|
MFS62 Apr 30 2015 07:52 AM Re: What if they played a baseball game, and nobody showed u |

I think both major leagues now have to report through the turnstiles count rather than tickets sold. As of a few years ago, each league did it differently. Later
|
Ceetar Apr 30 2015 07:53 AM Re: What if they played a baseball game, and nobody showed u |
it's the other way around. they report tickets sold.

Frayed Knot Apr 30 2015 09:09 AM Re: What if they played a baseball game, and nobody showed u |
I assume that because any tickets purchased for yesterday will eventually be exchanged for tickets at a later date they'd have to report this one as Zero to prevent a double-counting later on.

was that written by one of the protesters or something? It certainly misses ALL the points.
