Edge is making a list of songs with whistling in them. MGIMs list is of bad 1970s tunes, but contains some songs that decidedly don't suck leading with Kung Fu Fighting. Hell, that might be one of the best 1970s songs.

Indeed. Who doesn't?

All the more poignant when considering the memoirs of the now-late Cynthia Lennon include the notable account of John hitting her once and only once, when his characteristic jealousy was aroused seeing her dance with another man — an incident not only seemingly referenced in "Jealous Guy," but in "Run for Your Life" and "Getting Better" (despite the last being mostly written and sung by Paul).

Probably half of Andrew Byrd's songs involve whistling.

"59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)" features either Art or Paul doin' the whistle. I suspect it is Paul since he also whistles on "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard."

I dunno about Kung Fu Fighting, I'd keep that on the list. But I loved The Night Chicago Died. Na-na-na-na-na-nanana. For some reason I can't even explain, I found Gypsies Tramps & Thieves appealing. And Honey...my folks were big Bobby Goldsboro fans and that song strikes a nostalgic chord. It was a song that every time you heard it, that last verse would get ya choked up. It was sugar sweet but not like Seasons in the Sun, where the first time you hear it, you listen to the words and think what a sweet song. And then the second time you hear it your like ENOUGH ALREADY!

For 3DN. You people know I'm a Nilsson nut. But I'd prefer ONE by Harry himself. Shambala was such a polished song. All of their stuff, tight. How can you hear Joy To The World (or any of these really, they all got MAJOR airplay) & not be reminded of those times (us who are older). Just An Old Fashioned Love Song was played until it really was just an old fashioned love song. It sounded like thick syrup. Tasted good at first though.

Lots of memories with these songs. Especially the three before JoyTTW.
Easy To Be Hard, Eli's Coming, & Mama Told Me Not To Come. I went with Mama Told Me Not To Come because I enjoyed that trippy dream sequence it created. And I wasn't so old at the time that my mama wasn't telling me not to go to certain places.

We used to love "Night Chicago Died" when we were kids. I fondly remember one afternoon when we took the little record player in the carport and just kept letting the song play and play and play and play over and over while we played with our new Evel Kenviel action figures and the sweet motorcyles they came with!

I played it recently -- on a trip to Chicago, of course -- and ... it's awful! Bad in a good kind of way.

More notable modernish whistlers:

"Pumped Up Kicks," Foster the People
"Young Folks," Peter Bjorn and John
"Tighten Up," Black Keys
"The Walker," Fitz and the Tantrums

More oldish whistlers:
"Twisted Nerve," Bernard Herrmann (ie, that "Kill Bill" song)
"Rockin' Robin, " Bobby Day
"Walk Like An Egyptian, " The Bangles
"Wind of Change," The Scorpions
"Sukiyaki," Ryo something or other

But what was the point of the convoy? Where were they going? What would they do once they got there? Did they all pull off to get gas together, or did someone have to break out then rejoin the convoy?

To rock through the night.

Where were they going?

Across the USA. Specifically, the Rubber Duck goes from near San Francisco to Tulsa, to Chicago, then to the Jersey Shore.

What would they do once they got there?

They turn back. "Catch you on the flip-flop."

Did they all pull off to get gas together, or did someone have to break out then rejoin the convoy?

Not sure about that.

What do you need to know? They started June 6 with three trucks. They were good-natured rebels but workingmen, unwilling to give into the men who'd make them do their jobs a particular way (they tore up their "swindle sheet" marching orders) and of course didn't give in to no state troopers, speed-limits or the federal government.

Re: Stranded on a Three Vocalist Island

I've learned so much today.

I'm not sure if it's good or bad that they bypassed Michigan en route from Chicago to Jersey. This is a challenge presented by being a peninsula (Two of them actually.) We do have a lot of trucks. Perhaps they joined the convoy on I-80 near Toldeo.

We do have a similar event in Detroit each year, but with cars. It's called the Metro Cruise, and old guys drive their souped-up cars very slowly through a main drag in Detroit. It's like a parade without the Mummers or the Shriners.

I'm not at all familiar with this song. I thought convoys helped truckers save on fuel by drafting off one another.

Re: Stranded on a Three Vocalist Island

I think the Jimmy was hauling hogs. Pig Pen was driving that truck.

Rubber Duck had the logs in the Kenwrth.

A third trucker, who could be "Sodbuster" was in the cabover Peterbuilt "With the reefer on" I thought was a drug reference but apparently it's means it's a refrigerated trailer. We can assume he's hauling fresh fruit or frozen spinach or something.

You've never heard of "Convoy?" It went No. 1 in 1975. Fun fact: It was co-written by Chip Davis of Mannheim Steamroller fame. There might been a bad movie based on the song.

We should have a whole thread deconstructing bad songs.

I can't beleive there are people who don;t know Convoy exists. I had the single on MGM Records. When I first heard it I thought it was a song about hunting bears.

I later learned that CW McCall was a nom de plume for the artist who IRL was an advertising exec who dabbled in country music & comedy behind a "character" named CW McCall, and that my dad owned one of his albums. I used to laff at this one:

6. Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me (the low point of Elton John's career, with Bernie Taupin phoning in the lyrics)
7. The Happiest Girl in the Whole USA
8. Joy to the World
9. Walking in the Rain with the One I Love (for purely personal reasons; the guy across the hall put this on his record player on repeat, left and locked the door, and it ran all night)
