IGT 5/15-Brewers@Mets- Colon goes for his 7th win!

I hope the Mets are as ticked off as we are and take it out on Milwaukee. We need to end this recent slide here. The Nats are at our heels.
Brewcrew (12-23) will throw Kyle Lohse (2-4, 7.03ERA) at New York. Bartolo Colon (6-1, 3.30) will pitch for the Mets (20-15).

Milwaukee at NY Mets
When: 7:10 PM ET, Friday, May 15, 2015
Where: Citi Field, New York City, New York
SportsDirect Inc.

After a dismal series in Wrigley Field, the New York Mets try to re-establish their home dominance when they begin a three-game set against Milwaukee on Friday. The Mets produced a total of five runs and suffered one walk-off loss in the first three games against the Chicago Cubs before losing a four-run lead in a 6-5 setback Thursday afternoon in the series finale.

That capped a 2-5 road trip for New York, which is hoping to build upon its 13-3 home record. Bartolo Colon gets the nod for the Mets and will be looking to extend his streak of 40 1/3 innings without a walk, the second-longest stretch in franchise history behind Bret Saberhagen (47 2/3 in 1994). Following a 7-3 surge, the Brewers dropped the last two games of a 10-game homestand to the Chicago White Sox, both 4-2. Milwaukee's injury-marred campaign continued with the loss of shortstop Jean Segura, who suffered a fractured pinky on his right hand and was placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Kyle Lohse (2-4, 7.03 ERA) vs. Mets RH Bartolo Colon (6-1, 3.30)

Lohse got the win despite allowing four runs and seven hits in five innings against the Cubs on Saturday, yielding at least one home run for the seventh time in as many starts this season. He has his worst hit rate (10.2 per nine innings) since a rocky 2010 campaign and the highest home run rate (2.3 per nine) of his 15-year career. The 36-year-old allowed only an unearned run in eight dominant innings of a no-decision at New York last June, but is 2-4 with a 4.68 ERA lifetime versus the Mets.

Colon, who will be appearing in his 450th career game, has been a big part of the Mets' home dominance, going 3-0 with a 2.18 mark in three starts at Citi Field. He went on the road to become the National League's first six-game winner Sunday in Philadelphia, letting up four runs in six innings of a 7-4 triumph. The 41-year-old is 3-1 with a 3.97 ERA in six career starts against the Brewers, his lone loss coming nearly 16 years ago while a member of the Cleveland Indians.

WALK-OFFS:
1. Mets RF Curtis Granderson is 8-for-17 with two homers against Lohse.
2. Brewers IF Hector Gomez, who will get the bulk of the playing time at shortstop with Segura out, has eight extra-base hits among his 14 hits this season.
3. The Brewers have won 12 of their last 15 games in New York.

Re: IGT 5/15-Brewers@Mets- Colon goes for his 7th win!

I feel like this series is a big test. If the Mets can't beat the worst team in the league at home then they have hot probs.

Time to get right...especially with the best team in the league coming in next week. A horrible home stand could throw this whole thing right off the rails.

Re: IGT 5/15-Brewers@Mets- Colon goes for his 7th win!

I'd like to think that the series in Chicago was an example of the axiom that you're never as bad as you look when you're losing.

I guess we'll find out if that's the case here.

Having Bartolo going against the Brewers at [crossout:16w7srhg]Shea[/crossout:16w7srhg] Citi seems like a good way to snap this losing streak, but I'm not having an easy time being optimistic right now.

Re: IGT 5/15-Brewers@Mets- Colon goes for his 7th win!

Once again they will lambast Flores and, like last night, I don't think it was his fault. Mex pointed out Duda's horrible footwork there. I think we would have had the runner if Duda stuck to the bag.

I'll have to take another look at last nights throw, but at the time I didn't think it was as bad a play as I've been reading all day. And Recker's passed ball is hardly mentioned.

But everyone will pile on Flores.

In order to 'get to' this guy someone actually has to hit a ball hard first.
Even the long(-ish) fly outs and including the play by Braun, every shot off NYM bats tonight has far too much air under it - except for all the K's looking of course.

Were suddenly back to the days from a couple years ago when everything seemed like it was being hit by a wet newspaper.

No, I was going to second that. We needed a sweep off these guys. Their pitchers couldn't pitch batting practice to my old softball team they suck so bad. The Mets put themselves in this position. Before St Lou they really needed a sweep here w/Mil if they want to be thought of as a contender. To lose the first game 7-0 is as bad as it gets.

Re: IGT 5/15-Brewers@Mets- Colon goes for his 7th win!

I don't particularly mind him not going for third. It was late in the game, and we didn't need the run, so much as the six runs behind him. We needed non-outs more than anything.

Maybe a triple fires his team up a little and gives them a shining blue flame to follow into battle, but 147% of us would tear him to bits if he somehow fails in his attempt for three.

I'm more concerned with the lack of focus in on-basemanship. You take a strike when down by multiple runs in late innings. If it doesn't help you get a few base runners, at least it makes the pitcher work a little harder, and gets you into the bullpen a little earlier in game one of a series.

I would have been satisfied if he approached 2nd at full speed, catching his coach as he rounded the bag at full speed, and then break and back (as per coach call) to 2nd or go for the triple. I doubt he could have made a triple out of it, but there was a small chance (if he did he scores on the proceeding fly out). This team has to optimize its chances, force errors, do all the stuff that had them winning in April. Without a big bat we have to do all the little stuff, and do it right.

Don't mind me. Still venting after this one.

Game Oddity:

Mets bat top home run hitter 9th for first time since 1967

By The Associated Press
Saturday, May 16, 2015

NEW YORK — For the first time in nearly a half-century, the New York Mets slotted their top home-run hitter ninth in the batting order.

Wilmer Flores, whose five homers top the power-starved team, was in the No. 9 hole Saturday against Milwaukee, behind Jacob de Grom. New York manager Terry Collins hit his starting pitcher eighth for the third time this season.

New York’s top home-run hitter had not been ninth in the order since April 30, 1967, in a doubleheader opener at Cincinnati, according to STATS. Don Cardwell, New York’s starting pitcher that day, was in a seven-way tie for the Mets’ home-run lead with one. Flores became the Mets’ first outright home-run leader to hit ninth.
