Pineda v. Harvey

Michael Pineda struck out 16 yesterday, the most in a game for the Yankees since Ron Guidry struck out 18 in 1978. This is impressive considering the Yankees have spent good money to employ the likes of C.C. Sabathia, Randy Johnson, Roger Clementine, and David Cone. But that's what you get for paying guys more for their past than their future. Anyhow, the performance sets up a tabloid showdown over which is the best young pitcher in New York, Pineda or Harvey. People WILL milk this. And certainly clamor for a showdown at Citi. Unfortunately for the Yankees, it's not Pineda or Harvey. It's really Pineda or Harvey or deGrom or Wheeler or Syndergaard or Matz or Familia or Molina. Or Rainy Lara.

Yup. Ever since, I've kind of come to think that "Pineda" is just the Spanish word for pine tar. Silly rabbit. What you do is you put it under your shirt. And then, every time you tuck that honking necklace back into your shirt, you grab a big fat globule.

Art Fowler, Billy Martin's longtime pitching coach, would counsel his pitchers to put whatever foreign (or domestic) substance they were using on their crotch as no umpire was ever going to check them there.
