Announcement to be held today in Columbia, SC, regarding which South Atlantic League team is going to move there. Columbia, former home of the Mets-affiliated Capitol City Bombers, is expected to be acquiring the Mets-affiliated Savannah Sand Gnats, long believed to be playing in out-of-date digs.

The players will be pleased to be moving from a really hot city to a really hot city.

Spent a lot of time In Columbia. The players can enjoy lunch at the Lizard's Thicket. MMYF still thinks its the best corn bread she ever ate. The place is famous. Any campaigning politician worth his salt has his picture taken in front of it.

"We are excited about returning to Columbia, where we had a presence for over two decades," said general manager Sandy Alderson, who traveled to Columbia to help make the announcement. "So many of the top Mets stars, like current team captain David Wright, got their start in Columbia. The plans for Spirit Communications Park look spectacular, and we can't wait to develop the next generation of Mets Major Leaguers here."

Very disappointed they didn't get Tony Bennett for the big announcement.

Wonder what other needs in Columbia, SC are going unmet because local politicians tripped all over themselves to build a brand new ballpark to steal a team away from someone else?

Not that I know anything, but the Columbia area is actually doing OK economically (by SC standards anyway) as a result of lots of new nonunion auto plants.

edit: perhaps team name can reflect that
