IGT #52: Mets at Padres, 6/1/15

First of a seven-game road trip. San Diego and Arizona are sub-.500 clubs, they play sub-.500 at home, and I don't want to hear any of the stupid self-fulfilling prophecies about how hard it is to win during west-coast road trips. Mets need to go ?5-2 on this stretch.

NY Mets at San Diego
When: 10:10 PM ET, Monday, June 1, 2015
Where: Petco Park, San Diego, California
SportsDirect Inc.

The New York Mets kick off a seven-game road trip Monday when they visit the San Diego Padres for the opener of a three-game series. New York has not fared well away from home this season, winning only seven of its 22 road contests.

The Mets have lost seven consecutive games as the visitors, including three at Pittsburgh from May 22-24 in which they scored a total of four runs. New York avoided being swept by Miami at home on Sunday as Ruben Tejada's RBI double in the seventh inning snapped a 3-3 tie and made Bartolo Colon the first eight-game winner in the National League. San Diego earned a split of its four-game home set versus Pittsburgh with a 7-1 triumph on Sunday as Will Middlebrooks homered and drove in three runs while former Pirate Clint Barmes went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Andrew Cashner hopes his team can duplicate the offensive output Monday as the Padres have scored fewer than two runs in five of his last seven starts.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), FSN San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Jacob deGrom (5-4, 2.71 ERA) vs. Padres RH Andrew Cashner (2-7, 3.00)

DeGrom delivered his third straight strong performance Tuesday but came away empty-handed, settling for a no-decision against Philadelphia despite allowing only two runs in 7 1/3 innings while striking out nine. It marked the seventh time in 10 starts this season the 26-year-old reigning NL Rookie of the Year yielded fewer than three runs. DeGrom - who never has faced San Diego - has struggled on the road this year, going 0-3 with a 6.75 ERA in three outings.

Cashner snapped his six-start winless streak Wednesday, allowing three runs and eight hits over seven innings at the Los Angeles Angels. The 28-year-old pitched well during his drought, surrendering more than three earned runs only once while working at least six frames each time. Cashner has posted an 0-1 record and 4.26 ERA in six career appearances (one start) versus New York.

WALK-OFFS:
1. Tejada has hit well since being moved to third base, going 5-for-12 with four RBIs in three starts at the position.
2. San Diego RHP Josh Johnson, who underwent Tommy John surgery in April 2014, played long toss on Sunday but is not yet scheduled to begin a rehab assignment.
3. New York OF Michael Cuddyer is 4-for-14 with a double, a homer and three RBIs versus Cashner.

Ugh, stupid 10 PM starting times. I'm in a coma by the 4th inning.

I am not a great fan of the unbalanced schedule -- I mean, I don't need to see 19 Marlins games every year -- but the biggest benefit to it is the minimal amount of PST games that are on too late for me.

Re: IGT #52: Mets at Padres, 6/1/15

The Mets righthander has not allowed an extra-base hit in his last 25.1 innings...DeGrom has 20 strikeouts over his last two starts.

Mets are 229-234 against the Padres. can get to .500 this season with some good work.

STRIKEOUTS: DeGrom’s 207 strikeouts are the third-most for a Mets pitcher after their first 32 games...Dwight Gooden (282) and Matt Harvey (242) are the only pitchers in team history with more strikeouts through their first 32 games...

And way back in the day, these west coast games were at 11:00 PM.
Of course there were only two WC teams for a while ('62-'68) and then three ('69-'92) although, unlike today, you made two trips to each (usually all three teams in one trip).

Now we have the MDT Rockies, the DBacks starting in '97 who are technically are in Mountain time but effectively PT since they don't do DST in Arizona, plus the occasional interleague games in OAK, SEA, or ANA

Re: IGT #52: Mets at Padres, 6/1/15

He fielded with aplomb afterwards, so I imagine he's fine.

Had some hard-hit balls in the late innings but his fielders did their jobs.

Which is more than I can say for San Diego. I couldn't get over how much Matt Kemp had lost. When the Mets had Moisés Alou, 41 and half crippled, he was giving them more than Kemp was giving his team last night. That is one bad outfield all the way across. Seeing Curtis Granderson go back on the ball and comparing him to Kemp was like day and night. And he's only Curtis Granderson.

Here's hoping the big guy is back in the lineup tonight, but it was good to know they can score seven times without him. Still and all, with the 16 strikeouts, I fear that the inferior defense by the Gaslighters was making the Mets look better than they were, relatively speaking.

I've got to think that when the Dodgers sent Kemp over, they robbed San Diego blind. He's only 30!

16 Ks plus 3 runners erased on DPs took care of the other.

Non Ks:
1st inning: Granderson popped out
3rd: Murphy caught stealing
5th: Plawecki FO to RCF
6th: Granderson lined out to 2nd
7th: Ceciliani lined into DP
8th: Lagares GO, deGrom GiDP
