Nats with a day/night DH today -- both of which should be finished by the time we even get going -- so by the early hours Wednesday AM there could be as much as a 1.5 game swing in either direction.

NY Mets at San Diego
When: 10:10 PM ET, Tuesday, June 2, 2015
Where: Petco Park, San Diego, California
SportsDirect Inc.

The New York Mets have struggled on the road and look to correct those issues during a seven-game road trip. New York got off to a strong start in that quest when it posted a 7-0 rout of the San Diego Padres in Monday's opener of a three-game series.

The Mets improved to 8-15 on the road as Jacob deGrom pitched eight shutout innings of two-hit ball and second baseman Daniel Murphy went 4-for-5 and scored three runs. New York moved into a virtual tie for first place in the National League East with the Washington Nationals and is bracing for news on injured David Wright. The veteran third baseman hasn't played since April 14 and has been sidelined with hamstring and back issues and is scheduled to meet with manager Terry Collins on Tuesday. Slumping San Diego is 2-3 on a seven-game homestand and has lost 11 of its last 17 overall contests.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), FSN San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Noah Syndergaard (2-2, 1.82 ERA) vs. Padres RH Ian Kennedy (2-5, 7.15)

Syndergaard has performed well in his four major-league outings and has allowed just five earned runs after a scoring change by Major League Baseball took away two Monday, dropping his ERA from 2.55 to 1.82. He turned in his best effort while beating Philadelphia in his last turn when he pitched 7 1/3 innings of six-hit shutout ball. After walking four batters in his big-league debut, Syndergaard has issued just one in 19 1/3 innings over his last three starts.

Kennedy has been miserable during most of his eight starts and has served up 12 homers in 39 innings after allowing 16 in 201 innings in 2014. He has lost four consecutive starts and Pittsburgh torched him for seven runs and seven hits — including three homers — in 3 2/3 innings Thursday. Kennedy is 4-2 with a 4.66 ERA in eight career starts against the Mets.

WALK-OFFS:
1. The Padres are expected to activate 1B Yonder Alonso (shoulder) from the disabled list Tuesday.
2. Mets 1B Lucas Duda (knee) sat out the opener and hopes to be in the lineup Tuesday.
3. San Diego is 8-12 since CF Wil Myers (wrist) went on the disabled list and Myers may take batting practice in the middle of the week.

Four hours without any posts in the BB Forum this afternoon. Is everyone taking naps to prepare for staying up late tonight?

Nats won 2-0, pushing the Mets half a game in the rear view.

Outside of that I got nothin'. These West Coast games I just check the Interwebz for scores in the morning.

We're usually scouring around for lineups at this time of day but even that gets pushed back by several hours when we're out west.
So does firing managers as Willie R can tell you.

I'm on a work trip. My goofing off might be severely compromised this week, although my time zone is a small benefit for West coast starts.

Kevin Pillar is our AL hero of the day (that's Pillar, not to be confused with the yappy ex-BoSox Kevin Millar)
Only 2 HRs on the season coming into tonight for the Blue Jays CF, but he took Max Scherzer deep twice in the night cap of the DH in Washington today (the 2nd one w/2 on) so it looks like a split for the Nats today: 7-3 Jays heading to bottom 9

That makes our game for at least temporary control of 1st place in the NL East.

How many opposite field hits will he give up before he throws inside?

Challenge the hitters Noah.

I've seen about enough of Plawecki. Sucks at the plate, sucks at calling a game. Slow out of the box to field that bunt in the second inning.

I think the thing that pisses me off the most are those meatball curveballs thrown with 2 strikes. 98 MPH fastball. Establish inside and use it.

Just infuriating.

This ones going south of the border. That curve ball didn't totally suck. He looked to screw it into the ground and Norris somehow got it. 2 run blast.

If Noah does that thing the Padre pitcher did yesterday I'll be visibly upset.

Bad night all around. I blame Terry's stupid hit and run with the pitcher up.

Once you do something that dumb the baseball gods piss on you.

Noah needs to learn to pitch inside and this team needs to learn to hit.

Re: IGT #53: Mets at Padres, 6/2/15

I guess it was the thing to do but I would not have pulled Syndergaard there. He could have gotten a little more work in. I don't feel no comeback in this one.

I think I'm just in shock, seeing Noah repeat that pitching performance we saw from them last night. Gary's right. In the same series! After 115 years! sheesh.

Even that triple was more well-placed than it was smoked. I thought he would bounce back from that inning even though he gave up 4, but that turned out to be his best inning.

As Gary said earlier, double-digit hits and Ks by a pitcher in 5 innings or less had never been done before in the history of the game ... and now it happens two days in a row in the same series.

Has now struck out in 1/4 of his ML PAs.
That may be bushed or simply not ready, but either way I think those who were eager to replace d'Arnaud were a bit premature.

RBI by Wilmer ... comeback is starting!

IIRC aside from a nice little starting spurt d'Arnaud kinda sucked up the place til he went down and came back up. I like em both, hope both pan out. I don't expect Plawecki stay up when d' comes back. Cause there's something to that "he's not ready" talk. He needs to play and d' will get the bulk of it in the bigs, health willing.

Edited 2 time(s), most recently on Jun 02 2015 10:41 PM

Since Cashner left the game early in the 5th inning Monday night, I think the Padres pitchers have thrown about 80% breaking balls to Met hitters.
OK it's probably not that high, but between Monday's relievers, Kennedy the starter today, and especially Thayer who just got yanked, they've been the opposite of challenging.

... and down goes Duda on some junk.

It's not like his productivity is unprecedented.

It's easy to overlook, in part because of the depressed offensive environment league-wide, but his 2014 was a lot closer to his functionally useful 2011–2012 than it was to his disastrous 2013. He's had one misbegotten season, and Marc Carig would tell you it's been his whole career. I'm rooting for him. He's now got the second-best OPS among Met hitters not on the DL. (Third-best, if you count Syndergaard.)

Re: IGT #53: Mets at Padres, 6/2/15

This should have been an opportunity for Niese to work out his problems and also rest other arms in the bullpen. And, it would have fit into TC's plans to have pitchers throw between starts in the 6 man rotation. Those are generally the only good things to come out of games like this.

Later
