IGT 6/13/15 ATL @ NYM: Have a deGrom Day

"Waiter, there's hair on my mound!"

There sure is. It's Jacob deGrom versus Shelby Miller (plus their respective teammates) at 4:10 PM. WPIX-TV will pre-empt its weekly showing of Hey, Why Am I Watching Channel 11? to air this battle of young aces and high hopes. The Best of the Late Dr. Bernard Meltzer will not be heard over 710 WOR.

The first 15,000 fans attending the game at Citi Field will receive a David Wright replica jersey, courtesy of the Hospital for Special Surgery. The next 15,000 fans will be rumored to be cleared for baseball activities any day now.

All fans will receive a complimentary sideways glance from some dude in a dark red golf shirt.

Atlanta at NY Mets
When: 4:10 PM ET, Saturday, June 13, 2015
Where: Citi Field, New York City, New York
SportsDirect Inc.

The New York Mets look to continue their recent mastery of the visiting Atlanta Braves when the National League East rivals meet for the second contest of their three-game set on Saturday. Since dropping the first two games of the season series, the Mets have posted five straight victories, including a 5-3 triumph on Friday.

Wilmer Flores slugged his 10th home run to help Bartolo Colon pick up his major league-leading ninth win as the Mets defeated Atlanta for the ninth time in their last 12 meetings at Citi Field. New York's Jacob deGrom also is on a hot streak as he looks to win his fifth consecutive decision on Saturday. The emerging star had missed the Braves thus far in 2015 but was 2-1 with a 1.29 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 18 innings against them last season. Atlanta, which has dropped seven of 10 to fall 3 1/2 games behind the first-place Mets, counters with Shelby Miller, who entered the weekend ranked second in the NL in ERA with a 1.84 mark.

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, SportSouth (Atlanta), WPIX (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves RH Shelby Miller (5-2, 1.84 ERA) vs. Mets RH Jacob deGrom (7-4, 2.42)

Atlanta won eight of Miller's first nine starts but has lost three in a row, although he has allowed one run over seven innings in two of those setbacks. Miller gave up a season-high four runs in a season-low 4 1/3 innings in his last road start on June 2 in Arizona. The 24-year-old also surrendered four runs over six frames in his lone start at Citi Field.

After finishing seven innings just twice in his first eight starts, deGrom has accomplished the feat four straight times. He gave up two earned runs and fanned 10 in seven frames of a 6-3 win at Arizona on Sunday, improving to 4-0 with a 1.24 ERA over a five-game stretch. The Stetson University product is 5-1 with a 1.34 mark in seven outings at home.

WALK-OFFS:
1. New York LF-1B Michael Cuddyer is 3-for-3 with a double against Miller.
2. Braves 1B Freddie Freeman has collected a home run, two doubles, one single and three walks in his last two games.
3. The Mets are 22-11 against division rivals.

Danny Muno, your flight to Las Vegas departs JFK at 9:30. Don't be late.

Parnell was at 91-92. Nice to see him pitching again but he does not look the same.

I advocate hitting Freeman with pitches tomorrow. Does less damage.

Re: IGT 6/13/15 ATL @ NYM: Have a deGrom Day

Just too many mistakes. We dodged them all Friday night and dodged most of them today. But sooner or later that stuff is going to bite you.

- you know your infield is in trouble when Campbell is used as a defensive replacement. Yeah I know it was a double switch more than anything, but when EC is a defensive upgrade you've got a problem. And even if the glove isn't a problem, Muno clearly doesn't have the arm for that side of the infield (neither does Campbell really but he at least fakes it better).
And when I see this revolving door at 3rd, I think back to all the bitching some Met fans did for years about Wright's defense, about how anxious some were to shove him across the diamond to 1st. No folks, he's what you WANT in a 3B.

- I was shocked that Fredi G didn't bring Grilli back after his 8 pitch 1-2-3 10th inning. And two leadoff singles later it was looking like a huge mistake ... until Ceciliani made a huger one.

- I can't believe Simmons was able to get on top of that nose-high fastball up the middle leading off the 11th.

Are you just going to say this reflexively after each and every loss or are you going to toss in a cogent argument one of these days?

Pitching at him sounds like a better plan than the one the Mets have for pitching to him.

Re: IGT 6/13/15 ATL @ NYM: Have a deGrom Day

This one kinda hurt. I mean, having lived very dangerously the last two days, it's relatively fortunate to walk away with one win, but it still hurt.

Flores not picking the double play ball cleanly. Not that it matters that much without Tejada out, but that's why you use defensive replacements. And Muno spending the afternoon butchering third while he's likely a better bet to come up with those plays at short. There's only so far the "I wanna stay off the back page" logic can stretch.

None of Muno's errata led directly to runs... but they were deeply consequential in that it stretched the pitching staff's workday, asking them to get three more outs that, in the end, they didn't have in them.

Someday, somebody will wake up and realize how wasteful it is to default to changing relievers at the top of the inning whether the previous guy threw 3 pitches or 30. Bobby Parnell threw all of four pitches. With your closer out, and desperate for solutions, why not just let him start the ninth?

And sooner or later, you've got to let Gilmartin see the light of day against Freeman and Markakis. You know you're playing Russian Roulette treating Álex Torres as a lefty specialist when he's just not.

It's always SMBD in my head. Until it isn't, anyhow.

Like there's ever a bad reason to play "Swingtown."
