IGT 6/14/15 Braves @ Mets

Frayed Knot
Jun 13 2015 09:37 PM

Gee I hope we can win this series.

Dillon Gee -- not a 6th starter but one who has been inserted into the "Spot Start" role -- faces off against Mike Foltynwicz [3-2, 4.72, 1.49] a 23 y/o who had 16 relief appearances last year w/Houston but has started 8 games for the Braves this season since his call up on on May 1st. A former 1st round draft pick of the Astros (19th overall in 2010), they dealt him to the Braves over the winter for Evan Gattis, who I believe is an actual cave man.

Re: IGT 6/14/15 Braves @ Mets

Atlanta at NY Mets
When: 1:10 PM ET, Sunday, June 14, 2015
Where: Citi Field, New York City, New York
SportsDirect Inc.

The National League East is available for the taking if either the New York Mets or the Atlanta Braves can put together a run. The teams will meet in the rubber match of a three-game series when the Mets host the Braves on Sunday.

The Mets were the surprise team of the early going but are having trouble stringing wins together of late and dropped Saturday’s game 5-3 in 11 innings to fall for the seventh time in 11 games. New York was without closer Jeurys Familia, who was home to be with his family following the birth of a child, on Saturday and had trouble getting the final outs in his absence. The Braves have dropped seven of their last 11 as well but avoided a three-game slide when Cameron Maybin drove in a pair in the 11th. Maybin is on fire of late with multiple hits in seven of 10 games this month.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, FSN South (Atlanta), SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves RH Mike Foltynewicz (3-2, 4.72 ERA) vs. Mets RH Dillon Gee (0-3, 4.50)

Foltynewicz has been up and down since joining the Atlanta rotation and is in a funk of late with back-to-back rough outings. The 23-year-old was lit up for five runs on 12 hits and a walk while matching a season low with two strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings against San Diego on Tuesday. Foltynewicz pitched in relief against New York as a member of the Houston Astros last season and allowed three runs in 2 1/3 frames.

Gee will return to what is being referred to as a “six-man lite” rotation, with rookie Noah Syndergaard being pushed back to Monday. Gee was moved to relief and worked 1 2/3 innings out of the bullpen against San Francisco on Tuesday but will fill in as needed in the rotation. The Texas native lost at Atlanta on April 11 but held the Braves to two runs in seven innings at home in a no-decision on April 22.

WALK-OFFS:
1. Saturday’s loss dropped the Mets to 30-1 when leading after eight innings.
2. Atlanta 1B Freddie Freeman is 6-for-13 with two homers and four RBIs in the last three games.
3. New York INF Danny Muno is 2-for-24 and made three errors at third base on Saturday.

All those ANTHONY RECKER IS SIMPLY GORGEOUS banners will be bittersweet, as Ravishing Recker has been sent to beautify Las Vegas, along with Danny Municipal Disaster Area. They make room for Gee and Tejada, each back from a respective sanctioned leave.

Two back. Might have been three or more, but two outs on the bases.

What was that candy commercial slogan from a few years back: Not going anywhere for a while?
Well this game isn't going to end anytime soon either.

2 run innings are nice, but it would also be nice if we'd force the pitcher to retire more than one batter in an inning.
And it would be nice if Dillon could maybe miss a few bats every now and then.

Yeah, me too. That was a perfect spot for deGrom.
If he gets on then you've got Granderson up already w/2 hits under his belt for the day and and a runner on. And if not then you haven't wasted 1/4 of your bench.

I think it's the first time this season that I had mentally written off their chances of winning yet they surprised me by coming back to win the game.

Re: IGT 6/14/15 Braves @ Mets

Best win of the year? Mebbe.
Certainly the most unexpected.

Could have been a sweep but for the (rare) bullpen failure on Saturday. But we skated past some danger in both Friday's game on today's so we can't get too greedy.

And how 'bout a 10-8 game with 28 hits, 7 walks, and 16 Ks in under three hours? Barely under (2:59) but under. See, it can be done.
Take that Yanx/O's who are approaching hour 3 still in the 7th inning of a 5-3 contest. And also Houston/ChiSox a couple days ago who somehow stretched a 4-1, 8-1/2 inning game into 3:12

Re: IGT 6/14/15 Braves @ Mets

I'm not going to claim now that I saw the comeback coming, but this game had a whiff to it from the very beginning that something out of the ordinary was not just possible but almost likely.
If they hadn't answered for an inning or two after it became 8-3 then the interest level would have gone down, but that they came back with 2 in that same inning, which turned out to be the second straight 'crooked number' inning and the first of four straight, kept the optimism up.

Nice also to see a lot of the fire power come from the young pups.

Great game! I also felt like we could and possibly would win this one. I think it was how easily we scored in the 1st even though it took a wild pitch.

That said the Lagares home run shocked me; he was down 0-2 in that AB as usual. Darnaud makes the whole lineup come alive.

The banner was pretty much a last minute decision: we had tickets already, found out it was banner day only last week, and made it up last night. Changed the concept at the last minute and personally feel like we totally won but I think Karl is too subversive for the Wilpons; they prefer ones that espouse family values. On our way past first base we encountered Carlos Torres who signed our banner.

Re: IGT 6/14/15 Braves @ Mets

i'd have to backtrack into history, and i don't keep track of these kinds of things, but i think that most games minimm has been to have involved a mets win.

the kid is fast too. he blazed around hte bases after the game so fast i barely got one photo of him, which remains to be plucked from my camera...

he had a very good time, though i don't think he actually payed too much attention to the game.

unfortunately i got to the game too late to see the bannering, or get a nathans'-branded cap, but did meet up briefly with tmf, and snagged a pepsi party patrol t-shirt that landed in the aisle next to me. i may not have any luck getting actual baseballs at ball games, but this is my third t-shirt.

funny, I almost got a t-shirt on Tuesday. Was up in the excelsior. Saw one hit the corner but wasn't sure if it tipped in or fell down. I sorta meandered over there (no one in the last two sections, and this was pre-game) but an usher hustled over and grabbed it and gave it to a kid 2 sections over who seemed to have no idea what was going on. but hey, free shirt!
