IGT 6/15/15 - Blue Jays @ Mets

Frayed Knot
Jun 15 2015 11:43 AM

I had forgotten this IGT was on me, mainly because I
a) start so few IGTs
and
b) win even fewer
In fact I think yesterday's win via my IGT brings my winning total over the last two seasons to somewhere around one.

7:10 PM
Syndergaard vs Mark Buehrle

Buehrle is now 36 y/o in his 16th season of ML ball notable for several things: 215 wins, 14 consecutive seasons of 30 or more starts (read that one again folks), two career no-hitters (one a perfect game), and being perhaps the quickest worker in MLB
This season he's 7-4 w/a 4.25 ERA. He's a soft-tosser by today's standards who tends to give up his share of hits (>1/IP) and strikes out very few (~4 per/9 IP) but compensates by keeping his walks down (usually between 1 and 2 per/9 IP).

Re: IGT 6/15/15 - Blue Jays @ Mets

Toronto at NY Mets
When: 7:10 PM ET, Monday, June 15, 2015
Where: Citi Field, New York City, New York
SportsDirect Inc.

The New York Mets boast a young pitching staff that is the envy of most of major-league baseball. That staff will get its toughest test on Monday, when the Toronto Blue Jays and their major league-best offense visit for the start of a four-game, home-and-home interleague series.

The Blue Jays put up 31 runs in a three-game sweep of the Boston Red Sox over the weekend and topped it off with a 13-5 victory on Sunday that pushed their winning streak to 11 straight. Toronto is averaging eight runs in that span and showed off the power up and down the lineup with home runs from the likes of Ryan Goins and Danny Valencia in Sunday’s triumph. The Mets took two of three from the Atlanta Braves over the weekend and are clinging to a half-game lead in the National League East. New York showcased its own offense with four home runs in Sunday’s 10-8 victory – its first double-digit scoring output in nearly a month.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, SNET (Toronto), SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays LH Mark Buehrle (7-4, 4.25 ERA) vs. Mets RH Noah Syndergaard (2-4, 4.15)

Buehrle is making his third straight start against an NL East team after allowing two runs and eight hits over six innings in a no-decision against Miami on Tuesday. The veteran scattered six hits in a shutout of the Washington Nationals in his previous turn. Buehrle has yet to earn a win against the Mets, owning a 0-3 record with a 4.39 ERA in four starts.

The Blue Jays will be getting their first look at Syndergaard, who started his career in the Toronto system before heading over to the Mets in the trade that brought R.A. Dickey to Canada. Syndergaard was on the wrong end of a no-hitter by San Francisco’s Chris Heston last week and has lost his last two starts. The 22-year-old surrendered a total of 11 runs and 20 hits in 10 innings against San Diego and San Francisco.

WALK-OFFS:
1. Goins is 6-for-14 with nine RBIs and four runs scored in his last three games.
2. New York C and former member of the Blue Jays organization Travis d’Arnaud has hit safely in four straight games since coming off the disabled list and has five runs scored and four RBIs in that span.
3. Toronto SS and former Met Jose Reyes has hit safely in 11 straight games.

Just waiting for me to get around to posting this, huh?

Cuddyer has more career ABs vs Buehrle than against any other pitcher* and is hitting .318 with 3 HRs & 11 2Bs among his 36 hits.

* by a LOT! (117) - Sabathia is next with 68

What's this i read about Cuddyer awarding the MVP of each game with a garish Met logo belt? The player keeps it in his locker until he loses the belt to the next games MVP. Anyone hear about this? Anyone have a pic?

Bautista takes Thor out in the first. It was not a bad pitch. 98mph on the inside corner. But Bautista got all of it plus, pulling it into the 2nd deck.

1-0 Bluebirds

30 plus pitches for Noah in the first. Toronto tried to keep it going but Synderguaard, working very carefully, got out of a first & third situation.

For those who care Reyes K'd leading off the game.

Re: IGT 6/15/15 - Blue Jays @ Mets

Biggest problem right now (aside from being no-hit thru 3 innings for the 3rd time inside a week) is that Syndergaard has logged 5+ innings worth of pitches in just 4 innings.
Buehrle, meanwhile, has thrown less than half as many.

Now no-hit thru 4

He looks like he's trying to pitch out of the strike zone. Wheeler was doing that off and on, wasting too many pitches trying to be too precise. We are fortunate that there are a few Blue Jays who will chase out of the zone.

Re: IGT 6/15/15 - Blue Jays @ Mets

I'm not a fan of the two step that Flores does EVERYTIME he fields a grounder. Once I saw him not do it, on a Jeter fade/.jump/throw play deep in the hole. I don't recall if he got the runner but it was a good strong throw. He does not need to build momentum with the arm he has. I wish he would lose the two step.

Another K for Synderguaard ends the Jays 6th.

I don't enjoy dumping on him. But man, when you have a young ESL player, hyperventilating and deliriously happy, and you get only three questions, stop asking philosophical questions about polysyllabic abstractions like "resiliency." He has to translate into Spanish, come up with an answer and translate back, and after three beats the moment is lost, so he's going to spit out some banality. Stick to baseball questions — pitching, hitting, running — because that's an everyday language for all players.

Thoughts on the Game

- this one would have sucked to lose
- shifts giveth and shifts taketh away
- not often you give up runs in the 9th & 11th innings and still win
- Until Tejada's walk w/1 out in the 11th, the Jays pen had gone 10-up/10-down
- the only way Bautista can be hitting those pitches is that he's guessing and cheating for them. But give him credit, he does it very well and then doesn't miss them
- I liked that we got Encarnacion out of game but then it looked for a while that his running replacement was going to have the winning run scored and his defensive replacement have the game saving defensive play
- I would have scored Duda's hit a double; there was never a throw home
- Gutsy and great call by Tuefel to send Cuddyer and nice read by Duda to go to 2nd. Both decisions made all the difference.
- I had no problem with the Grandy PH. Buehrle's not a classic lefty killer and the alternatives were the spare catcher and the worst hitter on the team

And it if you ask a question that contains one of those polysyllabic words, if the player responds with a blank stare (while he's trying to figure out what he was just asked), don't repeat the question using the same word.
It happens all the time, and it shows the asker doesn't understand what's happening.

Re: IGT 6/15/15 - Blue Jays @ Mets

My problem with the Grandy ph was wanting wanted to save the lefties Granderson and Ceciliani for when the lefty was out of the game. If you can't use Campbell there, he probably shouldn't be on the team. But that's a bigger issue. It's certainly understandable why they'd roll the dice with Grandy there with two on.

Any game the Mets win these days with d'Arnaud out of the lineup feels stolen. Feels like we finally have bullets in our gun when he is out there. And if and when Murphy returns, the lineup will go eight deep most nights.

Especially since the Jays' closer is a lefty so saving Grandy (or Ceciliani) for later probably just puts him in against a different LHR

Re: IGT 6/15/15 - Blue Jays @ Mets

The key play in the 11th, really, is Tejada going all statue-like between 1st and 2nd and extending the inning, when the second basemen should have just flipped it to SS to get the game ending GIDP.

And not just 'go statue' but then made the 2B chase him for a sec in order to kill any chance at a DP.

Makes one wonder what Murph would have done in that kind of situation (either as the fielder OR runner): Run into the fielder? Run backwards? Call a time out? Throw to 3rd? Fake a punt?
