Mieumorieus of Kirk Nieuwenhuis

NBC's go the scoop. Goin' to the Angels for Kash Kinsiderations.

I don't know if the splits will bear it out, but he seemed to have more than his share of late- and extra-inning heroics.

Let this be a lesson to you kids. Grow a beard during the season, if you must. As the culture of the team evolves, so may you. But start clean in the spring. The first time your life you show up to camp with a job to lose, and you double down on the attention-seeking character? That sort of thing almost always blows up in one's face.

Be well, Kirk. Some good outfielding memories go with you.

The father's day home run was one of the best gifts I ever got.

The Lunchpail was a big fan.

Re: Mieumorieus of Kirk Nieuwenhuis

I still conflate Newy and den Dekker. All of the cyber ink used up on Newy here over the years is a sad reminder of how far the Mets had fallen.

struck out too much, but hit the ball hard when he did make contact. above average defense. Some big hits. Personally I think he'd have helped more this year, going forward, than the other guys we'll have on the bench, but it's not like he's going to break out Justin Turner style.

Yep, we'll never forget the Fathers Day walk off. I really thought Newy would always be an asset.

I really thought he had a supersub year in him this year.

The Angels have been making a minihabit of late of sucking down our outfield leftovers, ain't they?

Re: Mieumorieus of Kirk Nieuwenhuis

My greatest memory of Nieuwenhuis happened right on this forum. Around the time Rick Ankiel got cut (and Kirk called up to replace him) LWFS posted a fake Sandy reaction something along the lines of:

"I'm sick of all these strikeouts and flailing at pitches in the dirt. Get me....Nieuwenhuis!"

So that is what I will remember from our time together. Kirk Nieuwenhuis. A little better than Rick Ankiel.

The 7 Line drew the ire of Star Trek fans with a mock up shirt for "Captain Kirk" featuring Spock's "Live Long and Prosper" hand gesture.

Did NOT go over well, also a fine example of the annoying thing of a moniker given to a player by the media/or other outlet, instead of something organically given over time.

Mets overbought on NIEUWENHUIS 9 gear after his hot start. You could always find a stack of them in the team stores during the latter half of 2012.

Bob Costas decreed Kirk's Father's Day HR signaled the decline of Western Civilization. Truly, eff Bob Costas.

Good luck, Angel Kirk. Regards to Collin Cowgill.

This is the one I thought about.
We were going so poorly at the time that, even though I was aware that a big fly would win the game, it never once entered my mind that such a thing could possibly occur.
When it actually did happen it was such a bolt out of the blue that it brought me both out of my chair and out of my funk.

I generally retained some hope for Kirk even though his minor league career never really profiled him as anything beyond a 3rd/4th outfielder who might start on a bad team or back up on a better one. Would show flashes of raw talent but then inevitably mixed in too many flailing Ks and ineptness vs LHPs. Hoped he'd clear waivers and get stashed at Vegas for a future role, or at least bring back something other than a suitcase of cash in return but, seeing as how Syndergaard has already out-hit and out-HR'd him this season, it wasn't looking good.

I blame his oversized spring beard.

Re: Mieumorieus of Kirk Nieuwenhuis

He wasn't exactly Darren Reed, but his spring of 2015 convinced me he was going to be a dynamite 4th OF this season. Then April came and it reminded me why they make with the adage about not trusting what you see in March.

Re: Mieumorieus of Kirk Nieuwenhuis

Just a theory, but maybe clout-or-whiff guys who either hit it hard or flail-and-fail perhaps make bad bench players

Maybe the reason they were going so bad at the time of the Father's Day MiracleTM was that somebody was sending them the wrong color orange. Look at those guys celebrating. They look like the Cubs.

Re: Mieumorieus of Kirk Nieuwenhuis

i had hopes for Kirk as a platoon OF/PH guy who could help on occasion. I agree that his boom/bust hitting style is probably not ideal for a bench player, but he didn't walk enough to be a "3 true outcomes" Rob Deer-type OFer, so he didn't deserve regular ABs. I wish him well in Disney Land.

Will also lament the loss of Bethany Niuewenhuis from the 40-Wife Roster and Barkley from the 40-pet Roster (2nd pair from left)

Some people called him Captain Kirk.
I called him The Dutch Treat, because I thought he would make the other teams pay.
In the end, one team did pay (for him).

Nieuwenhuis bieumerang!! Mets re-claim Kirk off of Angelwaivers!

They'll probably just try a second time to sneak him through waivers, and the whole cycle may repeat itself, but cool!

Was he offered back to the Mets (like a returned Rule V Draft player) or did he re-sign with the Mets as a free agent?

Re: Mieumorieus of Kirk Nieuwenhuis

Neither. They simply claimed him on waivers.
The problem is that this puts him back on the 40-man roster (they had to move Blevins to the 60 day DL in order to clear room). But now they've got to make room tomorrow for both Gee (off bereavement list) and Tejada (off paternity) so they'll probably have to expose him to waivers again in order to send him down.
Muno is obviously going down and maybe one of the relievers too. But Ceciliani has done enough to stay so Kirk shouldn't be booking any cross-country flights just yet.

Nieuwenhuis goes 2–4 with an RBI double in his first game back in Vegas. Saw two XBHs go over his head in the same inning, though.
