Off Day News & Speculation

* Bobby Parnell is due to come off his rehab assignment this week.
His numbers in the minors weren't pretty (ERAs of 10+, WHiPs north of 2.5 -- those aren't merely 'not pretty' they're 'not pretty' the way Phyllis Diller wasn't pretty) and his velocity is reportedly down in the lower 90s, but there are limits on how long a team can string those rehab things out and his is about to end. You're not demoted yet Leathersich but don't send your laundry out.

* On the other hand the Mets do have options with rehabbing reliever Vic Black and they're using one of them, removing him from the DL and reassigning him to AAA Vegas.
His numbers aren't a whole lot prettier than Parnell's (although in a smaller sample size) and here there's also talk of a drop in velocity.

* d'Arnaud and/or Herrera could be back by week's end.
I know that d'Arnaud is probably closer to burning up his rehab days so my guess is we'd see him first. But Terry is quoted as saying "we need performance not names" and is wary of seeing guys go through their own spring training in mid-June (a la Murphy in April) so I'm betting they'll have Dilson use up his entire rehab clock and even then they have the option of giving him some minor league time.

* Rafael Montero is slated to get back to throwing again this week after -- say it with me folks -- being forced to back off rehab program

Is sending Parnell to Vegas an option? Would that expose him to waivers - and do you think another team would take him, given his issues?

I'm sure he's got too much ML service time/out of options for a minor league assignment which, if so, means it wouldn't even be a question of waivers, he could simply refuse a demotion and force a play-me or trade-me situation.

I wonder if he'd object. Considering that Double-A players are teeing off on him, you'd think he's appreciate the ability to get things back together in Vegas that be reduced to a mop-up role on New York.

It's startling today to see the shadows on the pinstriped uniforms. Worked with the snow whites, but not the pinstripes. But I digress.
