Windows 10

Anyone notice that Microsoft (or something) has put an upgrade
thingy on the taskbar? I have Win7 on two computers and the up-
grade is free to Windows 10 when available. Little leary, perhaps
unjustifiably so, but when does Microsoft give out free stuff?

yeah, it's free upgrade for a limited time.

I think they're trying to tighten ship and what not, try not not to have security bugs that were fixed ages ago but old OS users haven't gotten to it.

mandatory updates/patches once you get to 10 too. I'll probably update my Windows 8 laptop, but not really surea bou the 7.

I found that strange, too. I got it on my Windows 7 machine at work, but not on my Windows 8 Laptop.

I'm hoping my job forces it early, so I can see what I think before I upgrade the personal computer

It looks like a windows 7/8 mashup. It's bringing back the windows 7 start menu.

I 'signed up' for it on both machines... kinda weird how they're just
gonna do it and let you know when it's done?

I haven't seen it on any of my machines yet.

Also of note, they're getting rid of Hearts.

Re: Windows 10

My laptop that had been running Windows 7 is in the process of upgrading to Windows 10.

My PC which runs the hateful Windows 8.1 - not ready yet....

OE - at first blush, Windows 10 is pretty intuitive, and MUCH nicer than 8.1.

So what, and nothing is truly free anyways.

So far I haven't found any reason not to upgrade.

Still waiting to be able to do it on my PC.

Re: Windows 10

not doing it on Windows 7. My machine works just fine and I'd rather not risk the various security walls and things 10 might put in place.

updating the Windows 8 laptop when I can though. I think i have to finish installing all the damn windows updates though.

Installed the update last night on my laptop - I like the new look and feel.

I still have to set things up, but i went through the settings and turned off all of the intrusive MS crap.

I have Win7Pro on my desktop and laptop... just got the notification
that the desktop is ready to schedule. I'm torn, both machines work
ok. Maybe I'll do the laptop, that's the older of the two and more likely
to crap out first anyways.

Even the optional ones?

I wasn't going to bother because I figured they'd be mooted out by Windows 10. But will I get the option to install 10 more quickly if I install the optional 8.1 updates?

I don't think the optional ones matter. But the 'core' ones might. I dunno, I didn't have the alert for an upgrade so I figured I should update some of the core, specifically the security ones. I wouldn't worry about ancillary 'IE' updates or anything like that though.

Running Windows 8 on my desktop PC.
Haven't seen any download messages or icons.
Do I HAVE to convert to 10?
Sounds like you have to erase your current drive to install it, and I don't want to.

The installation is very easy. It takes about an hour, but doesn't require you to erase anything.

I'll tell you this - my radar map from The Weather Channel loads much more quickly with Windows 10 than it ever did with 7 or 8.1.

Re: Windows 10

I'm running Windows 7 Pro in my home desktop which is less than a year old. Very happy with it nd for now have not pursued upgrading to Windows 10. My wife is awaiting her turn to upgrade her laptop to Windows 10. I want to see how she (and I) like the new 10 after she puts it on her laptop.

Re: Windows 10

Hated it. My laptop screen looked washed out, I couldn't connect to my drobo, and other programs just were updated for it yet.

Maybe I'll try it again in a few weeks, but I'm happy to be back on 8.1

They're taking their sweet time notifying me that my laptop

I upgrade my Windows 8 laptop. opened chrome, didn't do anything else. seems fine. The laptop itself struggles to boot up (and did when new but I never got around to returning/exchanging it, figuring I could fix it) I get a no bootable device error many times.

Does your optical drive work? That sounds like a hardware/driver issue with your DVD drive...

HDD should boot first. (at least according to the bios)

I'm not sure if the DVD drive works, I think so, but who uses DVDs anymore? Thanks though, that's probably worth a shot, trying to update that drive or disabling it or something.

My wife has never received notification for her upgrade for her work laptop. She is geting a little frustrated since all of her coworkers, many of whom signed up for the upgrade after her, have received their updates.

I finally got my upgrade on my old laptop on Sunday. Used it for a day or two,, then decided to put in for the upgrade on my 11 month old desktop computer that I use most of the time. Got the upgrade the next day.

My wife finally got her notification that her upgrade was ready for her work lap top, but she hasn't downloaded it yet.

Re: Windows 10

I think I'm sticking with 7 on my desktop. Windows 10 feels a little too big brother for me to upgrade for fun. Getting ads and annoying Cortana popups and forced upgrades, etc.
