Anyone notice that Microsoft (or something) has put an upgrade

Ceetar Jun 05 2015 12:36 PM Re: Windows 10 |

yeah, it's free upgrade for a limited time. I think they're trying to tighten ship and what not, try not not to have security bugs that were fixed ages ago but old OS users haven't gotten to it. mandatory updates/patches once you get to 10 too. I'll probably update my Windows 8 laptop, but not really surea bou the 7.

dgwphotography Jun 05 2015 12:46 PM Re: Windows 10 |
I found that strange, too. I got it on my Windows 7 machine at work, but not on my Windows 8 Laptop.

Nymr83 Jun 05 2015 09:26 PM Re: Windows 10 |
I'm hoping my job forces it early, so I can see what I think before I upgrade the personal computer

dgwphotography Jun 06 2015 08:45 AM Re: Windows 10 |
It looks like a windows 7/8 mashup. It's bringing back the windows 7 start menu.

d'Kong76 Jun 07 2015 09:08 AM Re: Windows 10 |
I 'signed up' for it on both machines... kinda weird how they're just
|
Ceetar Jun 07 2015 06:25 PM Re: Windows 10 |
I haven't seen it on any of my machines yet.
|
dgwphotography Jun 07 2015 06:55 PM Re: Windows 10 |
I's scheduled to be released July 29th.

They will be pitching cloud services at the same time.

themetfairy Jul 29 2015 07:46 PM Re: Windows 10 |
My laptop that had been running Windows 7 is in the process of upgrading to Windows 10.

So what, and nothing is truly free anyways.
|
Nymr83 Jul 29 2015 09:14 PM Re: Windows 10 |
should i do it??
|
themetfairy Jul 29 2015 09:25 PM Re: Windows 10 |
So far I haven't found any reason not to upgrade.
|
Ceetar Jul 30 2015 08:45 AM Re: Windows 10 |
not doing it on Windows 7. My machine works just fine and I'd rather not risk the various security walls and things 10 might put in place.
|
dgwphotography Jul 30 2015 09:13 AM Re: Windows 10 |
Installed the update last night on my laptop - I like the new look and feel.
|
d'Kong76 Jul 30 2015 09:14 AM Re: Windows 10 |
I have Win7Pro on my desktop and laptop... just got the notification
|
themetfairy Jul 30 2015 09:47 AM Re: Windows 10 |

Even the optional ones? I wasn't going to bother because I figured they'd be mooted out by Windows 10. But will I get the option to install 10 more quickly if I install the optional 8.1 updates?
|
Ceetar Jul 30 2015 10:00 AM Re: Windows 10 |

I don't think the optional ones matter. But the 'core' ones might. I dunno, I didn't have the alert for an upgrade so I figured I should update some of the core, specifically the security ones. I wouldn't worry about ancillary 'IE' updates or anything like that though.

Thanks - I didn't want to start dealing with those.

Running Windows 8 on my desktop PC.
|
themetfairy Jul 30 2015 10:34 AM Re: Windows 10 |
The installation is very easy. It takes about an hour, but doesn't require you to erase anything.
|
themetfairy Jul 30 2015 11:28 AM Re: Windows 10 |
I'll tell you this - my radar map from The Weather Channel loads much more quickly with Windows 10 than it ever did with 7 or 8.1.

Rockin' Doc Jul 30 2015 04:17 PM Re: Windows 10 |
I'm running Windows 7 Pro in my home desktop which is less than a year old. Very happy with it nd for now have not pursued upgrading to Windows 10. My wife is awaiting her turn to upgrade her laptop to Windows 10. I want to see how she (and I) like the new 10 after she puts it on her laptop.
|
dgwphotography Jul 30 2015 07:28 PM Re: Windows 10 |
Hated it. My laptop screen looked washed out, I couldn't connect to my drobo, and other programs just were updated for it yet.
|
themetfairy Jul 30 2015 09:04 PM Re: Windows 10 |
The volume control is much easier to fine tune on Windows 10 than on 7 or 8.1.

I'm still waiting to get it on my PC....

Same here - still waiting to update my PC.

Cool - thanks!
|
themetfairy Aug 14 2015 07:16 AM Re: Windows 10 |
The instructions from the Lifehacker link indeed work - it was a smooth transition and my PC is now running Windows 10. Thanks!
|
Ceetar Aug 14 2015 07:27 AM Re: Windows 10 |
still haven't gotten around to it. I started downloading the Windows 8 updates last night then got distracted and won $7 playing poker on the internet.
|
d'Kong76 Aug 31 2015 10:52 AM Re: Windows 10 |
Has anyone who reserved Win10 still not gotten an update?
|
dgwphotography Aug 31 2015 11:21 AM Re: Windows 10 |
I didn't do the manual steps that I linked to above on my work PC that's running Windows 7 - I still haven't gotten the update for that yet.
|
d'Kong76 Aug 31 2015 11:28 AM Re: Windows 10 |
Thanks, I may try the manual method one night this week.
|
Ceetar Aug 31 2015 11:35 AM Re: Windows 10 |
I upgrade my Windows 8 laptop. opened chrome, didn't do anything else. seems fine. The laptop itself struggles to boot up (and did when new but I never got around to returning/exchanging it, figuring I could fix it) I get a no bootable device error many times.

Does your optical drive work? That sounds like a hardware/driver issue with your DVD drive...

HDD should boot first. (at least according to the bios) I'm not sure if the DVD drive works, I think so, but who uses DVDs anymore? Thanks though, that's probably worth a shot, trying to update that drive or disabling it or something.

My wife has never received notification for her upgrade for her work laptop. She is geting a little frustrated since all of her coworkers, many of whom signed up for the upgrade after her, have received their updates.

Not that these gigantic companies like Microsoft annoy the hell
|
Rockin' Doc Sep 23 2015 07:19 PM Re: Windows 10 |
I finally got my upgrade on my old laptop on Sunday. Used it for a day or two,, then decided to put in for the upgrade on my 11 month old desktop computer that I use most of the time. Got the upgrade the next day.
|
Ceetar Sep 23 2015 09:09 PM Re: Windows 10 |
I think I'm sticking with 7 on my desktop. Windows 10 feels a little too big brother for me to upgrade for fun. Getting ads and annoying Cortana popups and forced upgrades, etc.
