* I was thinking, even before the Belmont began today, that, although the horse racing world has been praying for a Triple Crown winner which many see it as the ticket back to the big time, that it finally happened may turn out to be the worst thing that can happen to them. First of all, nothing is going to return horse racing to its prior status back when they had a virtual monopoly on legal betting in this country and they're kidding themselves if they think otherwise. Sure, the shrinking band of insiders will still follow the season. But as far as the general public is concerned racing has long been reduced to a three-event season and now they've lost the biggest hook that was drawing in the casual fan. A TC winner next year, or even a potential one, will now have a kind of 'been-there/done-that' quality to it.

* Costas must love interviewing jockeys. They're the only athletes that make him look tall.

* Tiger shot an 85 today, and on a course and tournament that he virtually owned, one where he's won numerous times. It was his worst single round as a professional. He played just well enough on Thursday & Friday to make the cut (right on the number) but is now in dead last place heading to Sunday, 27 shots behind the 3rd round leader. His career, which has gone from distracted, to injured, to rebuilding, to aging, to slumping, is now in full train wreck mode.

* Nice try Will Shorz, but you didn't stump ME with your ball-buster Saturday puzzle. I got your mirror image answers right here!

Finally hit Rubirosa-- reinvented classic Italian-- downtown. Pretty damn spot-on pie (firm, crisp-but-pliant crust; tangy, bright sauce, splotches of fresh mozz), nice pastas/meatballs, excellent cocktails (including a few tight tequila-y-mezcal based ones) and surprisingly kid-friendly (or, rather, kid-workable).

The "Apropos of Nothing" thread feels a bit threatened by this upstart thread.

There was plenty of traffic on the Cross Island still at 9:30, fwiw.

I wanted to keep that thread on its toes; it's been taking things too much for granted lately.
