Cincinnati at NY Mets
When: 4:10 PM ET, Saturday, June 27, 2015
Where: Citi Field, New York City, New York
SportsDirect Inc.

The New York Mets have made the decision to shift to a six-man starting rotation for the "foreseeable future" and among the reasons is to reduce the workload of ace Matt Harvey in his first season back from Tommy John surgery. Harvey will be on the mound Saturday as the Mets continue their three-game series against the visiting Cincinnati Reds.

New York general manager Sandy Alderson on Friday laid out the team's plans for six starters, pointing to the need to manage the innings of Harvey and their other young pitchers. "If we were to continue with a five-man rotation, given the fact that he's pitched great - he’s pitched seven innings pretty regularly - those numbers get exceedingly high," Alderson said of Harvey. The Mets, who scored only 11 runs during their 1-7 road trip, continued to struggle at the plate with only two hits in the series opener but they were enough to produce a 2-1 victory. The Reds amassed 43 hits during their three-game series in Pittsburgh but were limited to five singles Friday in falling to 14-24 away from home.

TV: 4:10 p.m. ET, FSN Ohio (Cincinnati), WPIX (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds RH Michael Lorenzen (3-2, 2.56 ERA) vs. Mets RH Matt Harvey (7-5, 3.18)

Lorenzen matched his longest outing of the season by limiting the Miami Marlins to two runs over seven innings Sunday to win his second straight start. The 23-year-old rookie displayed much better control, walking only one batter after issuing at least three base on balls over his previous five turns. Lorenzen has been tough on right-handed batters, holding them to a collective .213 batting average.

Harvey appears to be back on track following a rocky four-start stretch in which he posted a 1-3 record and was tagged for 20 runs and eight homers over 25 innings. He was a hard-luck loser in a 1-0 setback at Atlanta on Sunday despite surrendering one run on six hits in 6 2/3 innings. That came on the heels of seven scoreless innings of four-hit ball versus Toronto on June 16, which boosted Harvey's home record to 4-2 in seven starts.

WALK-OFFS:
1. Mets RF Curtis Granderson has homered four times in the last six games.
2. Reds 2B Brandon Phillips has hit safely in all 30 of his career road games versus New York.
3. Mets 3B Ruben Tejada exited Friday's game after he was hit in the elbow by a pitch but X-rays were negative.

Re: IGT 6/27/15 CIN @ NYM: Tweet, The Mets

I ain't complainin'
But I'd sure like to find me
A true, fine glove
A Ruben Tejada
But that's better and hotta
A true, fine glove

Cause we don't have Wright
And Eric Campbell's been shite
And I've suddenly found that we won't win the crown
If we don't get our bats out
As we roll Steve Matz out — that's key
You'll see
And Steve's from Setauket
So you know he'll bring his family-ee!

Tied up on a double doing an awfully good impression of a two-base error. Bleh.

Perhaps if they try looking at more called strike threes then things might improve.

I believe William Safire would have considered it better usage to pluralized it as "strikes three."

Anybutts (suck it, Safire), we have a leadoff single and Laggy ahead in the count. Lots of strategy coming up.

Nope, ball four almost becomes a double play.

1 HR + 3 doubles + 2 singles + 4 walks in 6 innings = 1 run

One almost has to admire that accomplishment considering how tough it is to pull off.

I suspect we're going to see a game and a half tomorrow.

Yup, the final 3 innings (or more) of this one followed by the entirety of the regular game.
That's 12 more times at bat for the Mets so I predict at least four hits on the afternoon, maybe even as many as six.

Re: IGT 6/27/15 CIN @ NYM: Tweet, The Mets

They could have a strange roster situation where the team moves to activate Murphy, but he'll be unable participate in the first game, and Campbell (or Dilson) will have to grind their way through, knowing he'll be dismissed after the continued game.

That's already going to be the situation with Verrett, or somebody.

Figures things won't be routinely normal for Matz's start tomorrow.

Re: IGT 6/27/15 CIN @ NYM: Tweet, The Mets

Another quirky roster situation - if the Mets had postponed today's game instead of playing it, and made it part of a scheduled double header, they would have been able to add Matz to the roster under the "26 players for a doubleheader" rule.
But because tomorrow's two games involve the resumption of a suspended game, I'm not sure if they will have to remove a player (dl? Paternity leave? option? etc.) to add Matz.

Re: IGT 6/27/15 CIN @ NYM: Tweet, The Mets

Mets are now 5-43 (.116) w/RiSP over the last 8 games
But as bad as that sounds, it's actually worse as 2 of those 5 hits didn't even bring in runs even though one of them was a double (remember deGrom tagging up on a ball off the wall?)
The 3 hits that did result in RBIs brought in a total of 4 runs [2 1-run singles + 1 2-run single]

Most of our other runs this past week have been Granderson solo HRs

btw, that inning tacks on another 0-2 w/RiSP onto that above yucky total.

Two misplays by Votto. Flukey stuff. Big win tho. I hope Matz isn't shittin' bricks back in the clubhouse. He's been sitting around all afternoon just waiting.
