In seven seasons as a Brewers outfielder, Darryl Hamilton drove in 253 runs, stole 109 bases and slashed to a tune of .290/.351/.384. His OPS+ was exactly league average. Hamilton delivered a career-best WAR of 3.6 in 1992, the last year in which the Brewers contended for the American League East crown. As for the current Brewers, they're still in last place, sporting the second-worst record in the N.L. Tuesday: Niese vs. Fiers Wednesday: Colon vs. Nelson Thursday: deGrom vs. Jungmann Thursday's a day game. Gary Cohen will be back for the Mets.

For the first time in a few years, I plan on taking in the full series of Brewers games in person. Tonight with the fam, tomorrow by myself and Thursday afternoon with a pal.

Brewers are 1/2 game ahead of the Phils for worst record in MLB. We missed both catcher Jonathan Lucroy and SS Jean Segura the first time around when we took 2 of 3 at CitiField. Both are back now. The one game we lost in May was when we got 2-hit over 8 by Kyle Lohse whom we won't see here. In fact none of this series starters will be guys we saw the first time around. Of our three starters this week, Colon pitched the one game we lost [6 runs, 5 earned, over 5 IP]. deGrom gave up 1 run over 6 as he was on cruise control after the Mets put up a 10-run 4th inning. Carlos Gomez has been missing time lately but is expected back for this series.

Can SNY not, for Garyabsences the near future, lease the contract of Howie Rose from WOR? Wayne can handle radio duties fine with Jim Duquette or Lance Johnson or Brian Ostrosser or somebody riding sidesaddle.

We probably need a split on this topic...but I recall Howie doing a few SNY games in 2006(?) when Gary had some sort of surgery (maybe an appendectomy?) Kevin Burkhardt of course did play-by-play when Gary was absent from 2007-2014. When Howie was away for hockey, Josh took over the lead radio role and Wayne Randazzo filled in as #2.

GKR was new, and Howie had done fairly regular FSNY games as recently as 2003, so it wasn't out of line to wonder about the road not taken. I clearly remember the chemistry not being there when it was temporarily HKR. Howie was used to teasing out Ralph's recollections (and making the best of Fran) so he came off as more of "the announcer" than Gary did in the still developing SNY booth. Maybe they would have gelled over time. I think each man found his niche in the roles they've occupied ever since. Since this is ostensibly a Brewers thread, I also remember that same season, a little before the appendix situation (Xavier Nady had the same malady at the same time, necessitating the callup of Lastings Milledge), Keith took ill in Milwaukee on a Sunday afternoon and lo and behold, Ed Coleman showed up in the TV booth with Gary. He had to borrow a tie (for the eight seconds he was on camera).

Speaking of absences from the booth, have any of the broadcasters (TV or radio) sent best wishes to long time Brewers announcer Bob Uecker? He was struck by a ball during batting practice about a week ago and has been sidelined since then. Later

Uecker was back in the booth last night. The Brewers did give Darryl Hamilton a moment of silence at the stadium before the game last night. The crowd was not told to stand by the PA announcer, so the moment was spent by most fans awkwardly looking at each other deciding if they should stand or not as the whole stadium slowly got to their feet.

Good to hear about Uecker. I spoke to him many years ago, when he was a guest on a sports talk radio show (either Bill Maser or Art Rust Jr.). We talked about when he caught the spitballs thrown by Lew Burdette. He might be the second oldest baseball broadcaster (behind Vin Scully). May he continue calling games "just a bit outside" the norm for many years. Later
