Josh D. and Defenders Like He

Josh Donaldson goes full layout and backhanded into row three to make the catch Derek Jeter thinks he made.

That sick little snag occurred in the eighth inning of what was then a no-hitter, too.

Don't think that's such a great play? Post competing claims of defensive excellence here as they occur.

"a la Derek Jeter" I am so sick of the lie that is propagated regarding his tumble into the stands after his running catch....

I don't always vote for AL All-Stars, but when I do, I vote for Josh Donaldson.

The guy in the light blue golf shirt gives it the dynamic of a Mountain Dew commercial. White guy successfully executes something daring and reckless. Black guy goes, "I can't believe you pulled that sick shit off, white boy! You crazy!"

Well, you know, no one in baseball history before St Derek had ever made a running catch towards the stands or made a jumping throw before.

As far as this catch goes in particular, there are two reasons why it'll forever be compared to Jeter's
a) he's Derek Jeter
b) that catch happened during a tense Yanx/Sox game which means it was one of the few games the ESPN crowd was actually aware of. Donaldson's catch today -- coming as it did on a Wednesday afternoon in Tampa on the eve of the NBA draft and on the day after Brady's summit meeting -- might as well have not happened at all.

But in reality there's probably a catch per month of that type that's far superior to Jeter's. Nolan Arenado had a ridiculous one a month or so back diving over the tarp.

P.S. Donaldson stayed in the game after his catch. Guess who did not?
