International Signing Day

Frayed Knot
Jul 02 2015 10:26 AM

July 2nd in the opening day of sorts for signing internationals FAs subject to various rules and cap restrictions which I barely pretend to understand.

Anyway, the Mets have inked themselves a pair of short-stops:

- Andres Giminez from Venezuela who is listed by BA as the #2 prospect in this batch (although, as Jerry Seinfeld once said to Lloyd Bridges; Who knows how official any of this ratings really are?)
Described as: 5-foot-11, 165 pounds with a sweet swing that works in games, above-average speed and the potential for average to above-average defense at shortstop.

- Gregory Guerrero, Dominican Republic (nephew of Vlad) listed as #6 prospect.
He "impressed scouts with his overall baseball IQ and ability to hit in games from the right side of the plate. At 5-foot-11, 175 pounds, Guerrero isn’t a big runner but scouts generally felt he had a good chance to stay at shortstop with an above-average arm."

Both are, like most of the rest of the list, 16 year olds so it'll be the 2020s before they hit their 20s and have a chance to contribute on the big league level.
But it beats the club either sitting out this day or seemingly scraping around the fringes for bargain types as has been the case in past years.
Familiar names signed by other teams include Vlad Guerrero Jr (the #1 prospect sez BA) and Fernando Tatis Jr.

Re: International Signing Day

Because fiction isn't funny enough, the Padres have signed Henry Henry from Banana Baseball Academy.
