Fitbit and Jawbone UP

Everyone in the office has one of these step counters or the other, and started a weekly competition to see who can get he most steps.

Realizing that I am both obsessive and competitive, I got a Jawbone UP -- but only after finding a first-gen version finding one on sale.

I'm not sure whether these are really cool or kind of creepy. It measures sleep and everything. But I tallied 20,000 steps on the first full day, which included a long walk, mowing the lawn and going to a minor league ballgame.

Did anyone else get one of these?

I know it's a fad. But if it gets me back into running again, I can live with that.

I've got a couple of pedometers I got at the 2013 ASG. 20k steps is impressive. Isn't that like 8 miles?

Though I guess walking to mow the lawn is a shorter stride.

I've heard a couple of people use them but they never keep it up. the sleep measuring is interesting though.

Re: Fitbit and Jawbone UP

We all got cheapo wrist ones for a workplace contest a few years back. Mine wasn't recording properly, then the band broke and I wasn't getting any credit for biking. My sketchy coworker told me there was no way I could win so don;t try, meanwhile he worked his ass to become a finalist, looked like lots of corruption. Lesson -- fitness and work don;t go together

I suppose there's some kind of knowledge to be gained measuring your number of strides or whatever.
But, in general, if you want to walk more then walk more.

Re: Fitbit and Jawbone UP

I've avoided Fitbit. I don't want to be obsessed about how many calories I'm burning every waking and sleeping hour. If it works for you then so be it, but I don't think that it would be a good thing for me.
