Knicks suck 2015-2016

Jun 24 2015 10:51 AM

The new season begins with the 2015 draft tomorrow night, but the Knicks have started sucking early by being the only lottery team to drop in the draft order, going from 2 to 4, in a draft that is largely seen as a 3-player draft.

So what do they do at #4? Assuming Towns and Okafor are going 1 and 2, and Philly is projected to take D'Angelo Russell at 3, do the Knicks:
* trade up to get Towns
* trade down, to pick up either another draft pick or an established young veteran (like Eric Bledsoe), and pick a late lottery/mid-round guy like Frank the Tank
* use the pick to draft best available (either Russell/Porzingis, Mudiay, or Winslow)
* or overdraft a mid-round guy because they fell in love with him based on his team workouts?

And what FAs should Phil be pursuing (keeping in mind which FAs he might be able to talk into playing for NY)? Assuming none of the top-tier FAs can be hoodwinked, who's left?

* PF/C Greg Monroe
* SF/PF DeMarre Carroll
* SG Wesley Matthews
* C Robin Lopez
* C Roy Hibbert
* PF Paul Millsap
* SF Tobias Harris
* PG Reggie Jackson
* PG Rajon Rondo
* others...?

Re: Knicks suck 2015-2016

Knicks currently under contract for 2015-16 season:

PG - Jose Calderon, Shane Larkin (team option)
SG - Tim Hardaway, Langston Galloway
SF - Carmelo Anthony, Cleanthony Early

There are no "bigs" currently signed for this upcoming season.
The only Knick FA i think they should pursue is Alexey Shved. He is big combo guard with an instinctive knack for the triangle offense.

Knicks traded Hardaway jr to get back into the first round and get Jerian Grant, a guard at #19.

then they traded to get a 2nd rounder, another European big guy Guillermo Hernangomez, gave up 2 future 2nd rounders to philly

Re: Knicks suck 2015-2016

They took the guy with the highest upside potential and it's not like Winslow or Mudiay are sure things either. I can't get too upset with Phil for this. And trading Hardaway for a 1st round PG was a great move, even if its just addition by subtraction. And Grant apparently has some upside too. The big Spanish center is probably staying in Europe for 1 more year, but he's a strong defender/rebounder who has played with The Latvian Mamba before, so he might end up worth something too.

We still need a center, and a strong PF to mentor Porzingis, and a SG who can hit 3s. So, assuming none of the top FAs are coming, here's my wish list:
SG = Danny Green (D & 3 wing) or Wesley Matthews, + re-sign Schved
PF = Millsap or David West + re-sign Amundson
C = Monroe + re-sign Aldrich

Grant / Green / Anthony / West / Monroe
Calderon / Galloway / Schved / Porzingis / Aldrich
Larkin, Early
Amundson, Antetokuompo, Barfnani
Europe: Labeyrie, Hermangomez, Ndour

they signed Ndour for the Summer League (which starts in 2 weeks). I'm anxious to see who else they'll sign to get a look at there.

Re: Knicks suck 2015-2016

[u:1fc57mj4]Knicks FA rumors:[/u:1fc57mj4]

Knicks still pursuing Monroe and Afflalo. I'm not big on Monroe -- he's good but not great, and not a defensive presence, yet he wants a max deal. But he's probably the best big man they can actually get. Aldridge and Jordan are both meeting with NY, but i don't see either of them coming here. Happily, Monroe may be looking for a short-term deal so he can take advantage of the big jump in the salary cap that will happen over the next few years (due to new TV contract). So if we max him out, it may only be for 2-3 years, which could work out for both the team and the player.

As for Afflalo, he's ok and he fills a need, but what about Danny Green? He does everything Afflalo does but better. New rumors say Knicks are scheduled to meet with Green (a Long Island native), so that may still be a possibility.

C Robin Lopez -- He's the wrong Lopez but he's a decent defensive center, and they need one, so no complaints about that if it happens, at the right price.

Indiana PF David West -- he may not have much left in the tank, but he's still a defensive presence and a great leader.

Portland SG Wes Matthews -- still on the radar, but coming off significant injury and wants to be overpaid.

Orlando SG Willie Green -- he's old and not very good. So, perfect.

ex-Knick Corey Brewer -- Why?

Houston PG Patrick Beverley -- this makes some sense; he can play the point and shoot, and can defend, and he's 26. But Beverley is restricted FA and Houston may match.

Atlanta FA DeMarre Carroll - he's going to be sought after and will have to be overpaid. I think they're more likely to get Afflalo or Green.

[u:1fc57mj4]Knicks FAs:[/u:1fc57mj4]

-no qualifying order to SF/PF Quincy Acy. Good.

-interest in re-signing PF/C Jason Smith -- why? cuz he's a good "triangle" big man. But i'd rather they sign a good player, and Smith sucks.

-Travis Wear signed for summer league. good; he's got some talent.

Re: Knicks suck 2015-2016

Monroe signs a max deal with Bucks 3yr/$50m.
Well there goes that plan.

Apparently Phil didn't think Monroe was a max deal player. In a vacuum, he's right. But in an environment where mediocrities are getting $10m-$12m/yr, it's silly to pretend Monroe wasn't going to get $15m/yr+ from somebody.

Afflalo? He's not what he was, and what he was wasn't all that great to begin with. Is he better than Hardaway? Maybe, at this point, but it's hardly a meaningful upgrade.

They still desperately need some bigs NOT named Jason Smith or Barfnani.

Maybe they'll settle for the 1-dimensional Robin Lopez, who is still way better than any other options we currently have. Then there may still be some money left for David West and/or Patrick Beverley? Oy.

So we seem to be getting low-tier FAs at both SG and C. Wow, Phil, that was worth a 17-win season. Now we just need to trade Calderon for David Lee and will have a team ready for a period of extended mediocrity.

Vic Sage
Jul 04 2015 07:58 AM
Re: Knicks suck 2015-2016

we're not even getting David Lee! Instead, Phil is gambling on a revival of draft bust Derrick Williams (2yr/$10m), the undersized power forward without a jump shot. whoop-de-damn doo.

so instead of Greg Monroe, Paul Millsap and Danny Green, we get Robin Lopez, Derrick Williams and Aron Afflalo, and there goes our $27m in cap space. Yikes! i guess it doesn't matter that much, since the knicks don't have a 1st round pick next year, so tanking would've been pointless. we might as well win 35-40 games, and then re-set again next year, since everybody (except Lopez) is on short term deals.

Anthony is better at the PF slot at this point in his career, so they can either play D.Will or the rookie, Porzingis, at SF. I like Porzingis coming off the bench, since he can give them instant offense against 2nd teamers, without putting too much pressure on him.

Phil still has 5 roster slots to fill, with minimum deals or various exceptions. If he just brings back current Knick FAs, it'll look something like this:

starters: Calderon / Afflalo / D.Will / Anthony / Lopez
backups: Grant / Galloway / Early / Porzingis / [J.Smith?]
bench: [Schved?], [Aldrich?]
Reserve: Ledo, [Wear?], [Antetokounmpo?]
Europe: Labeyrie, Hermengomez, Maurice Ndour

Re: Knicks suck 2015-2016

yeah the no first round pick thing made tanking again kinda pointless, so lets shoot for the 8 seed and see if any of these guys are worth keeping around. Meanwhile, Phil says he wont be here forever, but I wonder if he really plans to stay longer than we think.. maybe long enough to build a team not centered around a ball-hogging me-first player who he was probably forced to re-sign.

Phil got PF/C Kyle O'Quinn from Orlando in a sign-and-trade (cash & a 2nd rounder in 2019). A solid, defensive hard-nosed big with some upside, still only 25. This may be the best move of the off-season.
We now have 11 guys under contract (including Ledo on a non-guaranteed deal) so maybe Phil will wait to see the summer league players before filling the last few spots (hopefully with young talents rather than old retreads).

Knicks have cut SG Ricky Ledo and signed:

- Kevin Seraphin [PF/C] 26 (from the Wizards), a typical backup center with athleticism.

The team is also bringing in Harvard SG Wesley Saunders and Virginia F Darion Atkins on partially guaranteed deals, and Antetokounmpo is expected to get a camp invite, too, to compete for the last roster spot.

Re: Knicks suck 2015-2016

2-3 start, but they've played pretty well. Matched the Cavs until midway thru the 4th Q, when LeBron took over.

The Knicks' 2 main scoring threats, Anthony and Porzingis, are both shooting lousy, and their starting backcourt (Calderon & Vujavic) are an embarrassment on D and don't offer much on O, either. Yet they've done ok so far. I expect Anthony to get his legs back under him and for this team to play at least .500. If KP develops quickly, and if Fisher swaps out the starting backcourt for their backups, they might even be a playoff team.

Here's what the rotation SHOULD BE, until Afflalo comes back:

Starters: Grant / Galloway / Anthony / Porzingis / Lopez
backups: Calderon / Thomas / Early / D.Williams / O'Quinn
bench: Vujacic, Amundson, Seraphin
reserves: Afflalo (DL), ______

If Afflalo ever comes back, he can bump Calderon to the bench, with Grant or Galloway moving to the 2nd unit.

Re: Knicks suck 2015-2016

nice win over Lakers. Melo always raises his game when Kobe is around. Maybe they should hire Kobe as the Knicks coach after he retires this year. Good, balanced production from everybody. Even Calderon showed up to play. I still don't know why Vujavic is starting over Galloway, but whatever. Grant had 8 assists, but the bench didn't produce much this game. Still, it was good to see the Knicks take control late and get the W. They didn't win these games last year.

Nov 12 2015 03:34 PM
Re: Knicks suck 2015-2016

close win over Toronto followed by close loss to Charlotte.
thoughts:
* This loss reminded me of last year, where we blow a close game in the last minute with bad play and stupid shots, marked by Melo in isolation missing a bad jumper;
* The return (or first appearance, actually) of Arron Afflalo, who played a solid game (12pts/6reb/28min), with actual defense, so we may see less of Galloway (and hopefully no more Vujacic);
* It is inexplicable to me why Lance Thomas continues to get significant minutes. Yes, he can play D, but he's an offensive life-suck;
* Jerian Grant is getting less than 19 minutes the last 3 games. Has Fisher been watching a different team? Every time Grant is on the floor, the ball moves and the offense gets open looks.
* Calderon had a decent game, the first in which he outplayed Galloway, but Grant should be taking more of his minutes;
* It hasn't taken Fisher very long to become disinterested in Derrick Williams, whose minutes have shrunk, game after game;
* Lou Amundson? I don't know why, but i like him;
* Lin-Sanity returned, overcoming a 10-point 4th quarter lead. I miss that kid;
* 7 free throws? in a whole game? Drive the ball, you losers!
* I've got a man-crush on K-Por. He hit a game-winner and the video crew stole it away;
* LeBron comes to MSG tomorrow, but for some reason this team gives me hope.

So now with a full roster, this is the rotation that Fisher is going with:

Starters: Calderon / Afflalo / Anthony / Porzingis / Lopez
backups: Grant / Galloway / Thomas / D.Williams / O'Quinn
bench: Amundson, Seraphin, Vujacic
reserves: Early

Re: Knicks suck 2015-2016

Knicks have really turned it around the last month or so, playing team ball --
* Melo has developed into a real leader; his assists and rebounds have increased, too, and his shot selection is better,
* KP has continued to develop (particularly on the defensive end), which has increased his minutes at Center (pushing the ineffective O'Quinn out of the rotation),
* Afflalo has been a solid contributor on both ends, sometimes even carrying the offense,
* D-Will has fought his way back into the rotation and has been giving them a real scoring punch off the bench,
* Thomas has surprised me by developing a reliable offensive game,
* Galloway continues his useful play, and
* Even Lopez's little baby hook has shown some recent consistency.

BUT:
* Calderon remains mostly useless,
* Grant just can't shoot -- at all --
* OQuinn has been ineffective and turnover prone,
* Vujacic's lack of d has nailed him to the bench,
* along with Seraphin,
* Amundson has cut off his man-bun, and
* Early has been hurt.

now we're at .500.

Starters: Calderon / Afflalo / Anthony / Porzingis / Lopez
backups: Grant / Galloway / Thomas / D.Williams
bench: O'Quinn, Amundson, Seraphin, Vujacic

So what I'm learning from this firing is that the Knicks (which means I assume, Phil) saw fit to give a never before tested coach a Five Year / $25 million contract and then realize less than 1/3 of the way through the deal that it was a mistake and it's time to change gears even though there's no one in mind at the moment!!

its pretty simple really: when you impose a salary cap on the rich owners in big cities that is the same as the cap on the less-rich owners in smaller markets those big market owners (if they are smart) will find other ways to spend more money - coach salaries, scouts, comfortable locker rooms to entice players, whatever. in a cap-free world the Knicks payroll is much higher, such willingness to eat a coach's contract is a product of the cap.
