RECAP: Stones 7, Doors 3
Again, I'm surprised this wasn't more of a blowout. "Break On Through" only won because of a weak matchup, and the awesome power of "Soul Kitchen" was wasted against the terrible "Miss You." Really, all ten of these were easy picks.

Miss You vs. Soul Kitchen

Love Mick's falsetto. Stones, 1-0.

Wild Horses vs. Riders on the Storm

Horses beat riders anyday. Stones, 2-0.

Midnight Rambler (Live) vs. You Make Me Real

Tie. Stones, 2.5-0.5.

Under My Thumb vs. Break On Through (To the Other Side)

Good vocal by Mick. Stones, 3.5-0.5.

Mother's Little Helper vs. Love Me Two Times

Two gimmick songs trying to push the envelope on what's permissible on the radio. "Two Times" is more of a band song. Stones, 3.5-1.5.

Street Fighting Man vs. Whiskey Bar (Alabama Song)

Not close. Stones, 4.5-1.5.

Gimmie Shelter vs. Light My Fire

Not closer. Stones, 5.5-1.5.

No Expectations vs. Hello, I Love You

Here, the Stones speak to my inner woman (who was offended by "Thumb.") Stones, 6.5-1.5.

Sympathy for the Devil vs. L.A. Woman

"Sympathy" is great record making, their performance on "Rock 'n' Roll" circus was embarrassing and they we're right to pull it. Stones, 7.5-1.5.

Paint It Black vs. Love Her Madly

Call it a tie.

Stones, 8-2.

See, I'm of the belief that the 10 greatest Stones' songs would not include anything after 1972, but other folks who ragged on me for my picks kept mentioning late 70's stuff so I threw them a bone with "Miss You" (the slimy things one has to do to appeal to the voters and it still backfires). I'm glad this is the last challenge for the Rolling Stones because this whole band ladder challenge pisses me off and I'll be glad to wash my hands of it.

When alla this began (offa my post saying that 10 Doors songs are better than 10 Queen songs) I was just making the point that the Doors were better than Queen. Which it has been conclusively proven, they were. I would, however, rate many bands ahead of the Doors. As a matter of fact, I own no Doors CDs though I do have several on vinyl. The Stones up until they jumped the shark after "Exile On Main Street" (where the hell are songs from that album on Willets' list?) have more good songs.

Miss You vs. Soul Kitchen - STONES

Wild Horses vs. Riders on the Storm - DOORS

Midnight Rambler (Live) vs. You Make Me Real - STONES

Under My Thumb vs. Break On Through (To the Other Side) - STONES

Mother's Little Helper vs. Love Me Two Times - STONES

Paint It Black vs. Love Her Madly - DOORS

Stones win 7-3

I like 'L.A. Woman' but she's out of her league in that matchup.

Closer than I thought also but The Stones to me are the #1 Rock and Roll band of all time so any challenge is folly.

Rock on Mick.

Miss You vs. Soul Kitchen - Stones

Wild Horses vs. Riders on the Storm - Stones

Midnight Rambler (Live) vs. You Make Me Real - Edge Stones, but nice to see a Doors song that isn't completely beaten to death by radio programmers

Under My Thumb vs. Break On Through (To the Other Side) - Doors

Mother's Little Helper vs. Love Me Two Times - Stones in a close one

Street Fighting Man vs. Whiskey Bar (Alabama Song) - Big Stones victory

Gimmie Shelter vs. Light My Fire - Enormous Stones victory

No Expectations vs. Hello, I Love You - Like the gee-taring in the Stones

Sympathy for the Devil vs. L.A. Woman - Nother Stones victory

Paint It Black vs. Love Her Madly - Stones

Ouch. Doors get stoned, 9-1 is your final.

]"Exile On Main Street" (where the hell are songs from that album on Willets' list?)

Great album, worthy to be called masterpiece, but no individual song really stands out for me. In fact looking at Exile's song list there are few songs I can actually match up with their titles in my mind, but I love listening to the whole album.

Doors put out 7 albums (not counting the 2 post-Morrison albums or greatest hits collections). Stones vs. 7 albums vs. Doors first 7 albums:

England's Newest Hitmakers vs. The Doors

12 x 5 vs. Strange Days

Rolling Stones Now! vs. Waiting for the Sun

Out of Our Heads vs. The Soft Parade

December's Children (And Everybody's) vs. Morrison Hotel

Got Live If You Want It vs. Absolutely Live

Aftermath vs. L.A. Woman

Out of Our Heads and Aftermath the only really good albums there by the Stones (OOOH is better than The Soft Parade [the Doors' worst album] and Aftermath and LA Woman are pretty close). Both live albums suck.
Stones still had Between the Buttons and Their Satanic Majesties Request before you get to Beggar's Banquet, their first great album.

Nice matchup. Let's see:

Miss You vs. Soul Kitchen -- Tie (neither particularly good)
Wild Horses vs. Riders on the Storm -- Doors
Midnight Rambler (Live) vs. You Make Me Real -- Stones
Under My Thumb vs. Break On Through (To the Other Side) -- Stones
Mother's Little Helper vs. Love Me Two Times -- Doors
Street Fighting Man vs. Whiskey Bar (Alabama Song) -- Tie
Gimmie Shelter vs. Light My Fire -- Stones (assuming the album version of "Light My Fire")
No Expectations vs. Hello, I Love You -- Stones (points off for the Door's plagiarism)
Sympathy for the Devil vs. L.A. Woman -- Stones
Paint It Black vs. Love Her Madly -- Stones

It's all in the song selection: The Doors would do better with "People are Strange," "The Soft Parade," "Variety is the Spice of Life," "Break on Through," "When the Music's Over," or "Roadhouse Blues."

Break On Through was on there and you didn't vote for it. I considered People Are Strange and meant to use Roadhouse Blues. Earlier voting seemed to feel that the long "poetry" songs (like WHen the Music's Over or The Soft Parade) wouldn't do so well (bad reaction to "The End") so I left them off. You're the first person I've ever heard of who likes "Variety is the Spice of Life" or any post-Morrison song (though "Tightrope Ride" is pretty good).

I also like "I'm Horny, I'm Stoned." Other Voices was as good as any of the other Doors albums.

sharpie
Feb 07 2006 04:37 PM

No, it isn't. It may be as good as "The Soft Parade" but that's as far as I'll go. I never heard the album they made after "Other Voices."
